Since 2009 when insurgency broke out in Nigeria, at least 47,000 people have been killed in the Boko Haram war, according to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). Also, over two million have been displaced.

One often neglected statistics, however, is the estimated 10,000 plus soldiers who have died in the war. And as specially reported by the online newspaper, Premium Times, on April 22, 2020, Families of Nigerian soldiers killed in battles suffer amidst official neglect. This is not to mention the families of other security operatives of other security agencies who continue to die almost on daily basis as security continues to worsen in the country.

There is no doubt that the uncertainties faced by the windows and children of these security operatives go a long way to weaken the resolve of those at the front line to stake their lives. And, in the absence of encouragements by Nigerians in form of public support for these families, it is only a matter of time before the worsening situation begins to reach our friends and families. There is no doubt that the government cannot do it alone.

The Foundation seeks the encouragement of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, for security operatives who continue to lay down their lives for the safety of Nigerians, by gifting N500,000.00 each to 5,000 widows of those who have died in the line of duty in the past few years across the services.

If this public call goes through, there is no doubt that it will go a long way to boost morale and gallantry in those at the field to enhance security in Nigeria.
