Our agricultural journey has been wonderful, a little reminder I am a person dats singular but I use our to signify I and my team, the old elderly farmers I listened to eagerly learning plenty, I might be a graduate from a Univerty of Agriculture but I tell you don't joke with a wise experienced farmer, practical wisdom ain't read or studied,
Second members of my team include friends who last year sometimes worked for free just so we keep moving, my farm manager, all labour and helper from the tractor operator to sprayers to farm escorts or gisting partners you all made/make WinFarms possible..

This thread is as the name applies is the story of our journey, it will include daily activities, mistakes, innovations, and titbits from planting our crops(babies) til harvest, nairaland you guys made the last thread successful so let's make this same, feel free to add inputs, criticise, encourage, advise etc

Last year a major challenge was access road, remember the cool wooden bride I posted Abi, let the rains come heavily you can't pass it, like wise when you want to harvest you need to go round taking a longer road all this influenced our decision to seek for land easily more assesible

so welcome to Lower Benue basin authority, it's thousands of hectares all owned by FG where you rent annually and use, don't worry eh by God's grace all our hectares will be our own lands ..

I must say it's a very beautiful place with good excellent lands for almost all crops, from rice, Cassava, maize etc it's suppose to have a dam, but corruption showed it's self, the dam was awarded twice and is still incomplete and in ruins but I tell u it's still a beautiful site

happily we actually do not have such issues here, maybe it's because this area ain't part of there prehistoric grazing routes

I do hope these preemergents do not end up polluting the water and land in that river basin. Left to me, we need to preserve the river basins and control what farmers can apply there.

certainly it won't, we didn't abuse it and your right sir, herbicides are seriously being abused in Nigeria, you see people mixing 250, 200ml in a 16L knapsack for weeds that's just 2 or 3 leaf stage

So today we mix a yellow herbicide with a green one to get a super herbicide.. Lagon prevents weed growth while paracot kills already growing weed..

From testimonials I must say am quite excited to be using Lagon this season, have seen fields where till harvest the farm was still weed free due to the efficacy of Lagon.

A little bit of advise, spray Lagon on a moist soil, also after spraying to walking, working etc on the field for atleast 3 days, the chemical forms Lik a carpet over the field so walking on it reduces it's efficacy.. 50ml for maize per 16L knapsack sprayer 100ml for casava or very rich soil

Happy weekend everyone hope you all doing well, so below is all you've missed on how our farming year began

Due to the abnormal rain patterns at the onset of the raining season, we decided against very early crops and cultivation was planned 4 June when surely the rains should be here, over here rain feel just thrice in the whole of may.
Re: Winfarms 2021 Wet Season Farming Our Dairy.. by willybaby(m): 3:35pm On Jun 19, 2021
First week of June our lands were ploughed, and harrowed..

Re: Winfarms 2021 Wet Season Farming Our Dairy.. by willybaby(m): 3:42pm On Jun 19, 2021
After harrowing 2 tons of poultry manure was delivered in bags and broadcasted by heactre, Maize is a heavy feeder and we didn't wanna take chances, a lil story last year NPK 15 15 15 fertiliser a neighbour bought, a very popular brand actually a week after application was still undissolved in the soil, probably might be a fake or production error..

Re: Winfarms 2021 Wet Season Farming Our Dairy.. by willybaby(m): 4:14pm On Jun 19, 2021
Poultry waste is very good 4 crops, and can even be used totally as a substitute to NPK if a soil test is conducted and it's applied in sufficient quantity, but in its raw state it is very hot, this is due to acids and microbes in chicken shit.. so that's why after broadcasting our poultry manure we let rain fall on it sufficiently to cause degradation before we riddged

Planting of our maize using our handheld planter, was fabricated in house after Watching a YouTube video.. imagine our seeds sitting comfortably above a degrading layer of manure grin

Nice job u are doing here op. What is the mixing ratio of the 2 herbicides u mixed together?
I guess u planted corn first and spray immediately, When are u intercropping the cassava?
