How The Separation of Singapore From Malaysia, Led to The Prosperity of Both Nations!

What happens when you colonize very smart people? The Japanese conquered Singapore during the second world war, this made it a Japanese colony briefly. But after Japan lost the war, Singapore was taken over by the British again.

The British merged them with their neighboring country Malaysia in 1963 in some sort of independence. So now the country of Malaysia had the Malaya's on one side and the Singaporeans on the other side.

Problems started immediately, ethnic tensions, racism, tribalism, and bloodshed shot through the roof.

In addition to that, their other more powerful neighbor Indonesia declared some sort of military war against them. Indonesia allegedly started sponsoring violence within Malaysia in such a way as to cause tension between them and China.

The Singaporeans protested that the constitution drafted for them at independence was very discriminatory; it gave some specific privileges to the Malays.

The Malays were in power but appeared to be generally not as educated as the Singaporeans, so from day 1 of the independence, they were concerned that the economic center of the country will eventually drift to the region of the Singaporeans.

The president of Malaysia being an intelligent man thought of a solution to this problem, one of the key Singaporean politicians convinced him that the best for their combined future is to split the country.

They both agreed but they had one more problem: the British. The British had merged them 2 years earlier, they may not allow them to break up. So what was their solution?

They selected top elected senators on both sides and put them in a super-covert meeting where they worked day and night to create massive changes in their condition such that it will allow their country to be split.

Why was it a secret meeting?

So that once they are done effecting their changes and executing their plan, they will present the British with what is now known as "fait accompli".

This simply means, "Boss, we have already split the country, sorry we didn't tell you on time, nothing else you can do".

On 9th August 1965, the Malaysian parliament which involved senators from both sides voted to let Singapore go. What was the vote count? 126 - 0, that is all the senators that voted that day, voted for separation.

That was how the republic of Singapore was created. After separation, much of the international media attacked Singapore, predicting that they will relapse into poverty and perish in penury.

Even though Singapore was a very poor country then, it had a very important resource: super-smart humans.

The very next month, they applied and joined Commonwealth nations.

To lift itself out of poverty, Singapore created an industrial estate in one of its towns called Jurong. Then day baited foreign investors with huge tax incentives.

This single-handedly transformed the nation's economy. Singapore has no natural oil deposits, to take advantage of the global oil boom, they managed to convince Shell and other big oil companies to build oil refineries in Singapore.

Singapore's next major problem was housing, it's people were very poor so they built small houses that were prone to fire.

To solve the problem, Singapore set up a housing development board, this board used money the government made to start building multi-level buildings.

The government then allowed its homeless citizens to own flats in these new buildings and pay in installments using their compulsory savings accounts.

The British pulled out their troops from Singapore in 1971, Singapore needed to build its army, so what did it do? It secretly contacted Israel and asked for help. Israel covertly helped them to establish their armed forces.

What was the result of all these fundamental changes?

Today, Singapore is arguably the best country in the world, their GDP per capita is $65,000.

In comparison, Nigeria's GDP per capita is $2,000, even as an oil-producing nation. Malaysia's GDP per capita is $16,000.

What is the moral lesson in this?

Reasonable people separated without fight but Black Shameless Africans want to tear themselves apart before allowing one person to go. On top of a contraption created by one white idiot from Scotland oh without any plan for viability or progress of the new contraption but using the excess money from South to subsidise or financially support the very poor North.
Afonjas and Aboki people can't just use their brain and allow Ndigbo to go peacefully then continue their romance without disturbance.

Nigeria separation will be by implosion and not referendum. Even the almighty UK that joined the 2 protectorate together and "warned" them never to separate organised a referendum for Scotland when it wanted to leave the union

Nigerias’ problem is only as deep as you want it to be! We all know our problems, but some are pretending they don’t exist just so they can keep on benefiting from ‘one Nigeria’!

Our biggest problems are the core north hegemony and their greedy, grasping and conscienceless southern enablers/supporters! Let’s call a spade a spade and not a digging instrument!

You just proved my point.
NIGERIANS are naturally dumb. Dialogue with who about my freedom?
Oga unlike you lots in Nigeria, we Ndigbo know our problem. We know who caused the problem and we are knocking at his door not our fellow inmates.
Yes inmates because you lots that feel like you are the ones holding imaginary group down are the most foolish set of humanoids that ever existed.
You are in the same mess or worse but you want and somehow manage to convince yourselves that you are the oppressors and are Shamelessly living the lie.
The person holding us in Nigeria is Britain that is why we are protesting in front of the White Hall day in day out. We are not protesting on the streets of Abuja or Lagos because we know that none of them hold the key but are actually our fellow inmates but unlike us, they love their chains probably because they have convinced themselves that they are worth nothing outside the Shameless comfort of the British Zoo called Nigeria.
They rely on the Zoo keeper (Britain) for everything and are scared to take the leap like Ndigbo

British zoo! British zoo! yet Chinua Achebe died in Britain, Ojukwu spent most of his life there, and the present liberator is currently living there (and I'm perfectly sure he never condemns the government openly there)...

You think those that run the affair of this godforsaken useless country don’t know that southern and northern Nigeria don’t have anything in common? Of course they do but Northern oligarchy parasitic region will do everything it takes to sustain this contraption, it’s by force by fire union.

With their highest level of poverty, out of school children, illiteracy, diseases and insurgence etc. Where on earth do you want them to see funds to tackle all these problems if not from the resources coming from the southern Nigeria.

North will do everything it takes to sustain ONE NIGERIA even if it’s by killing individual or groups that try to agitate.

Happy one Nigeria of by fire by force. Even if you’re not patriotic, just pretend and chant ONE NIGERIA. That’s all matters to the northern oligarchy

Good write up.

Since the abolition of regional system in Nigeria, the north has been holding back the other regions from the giant strides they were making in the 60s.

After Nigeria breaks into 3 or more news countries, great prosperous nations will emerge. They will revive their development based on their areas of strength and national interest. Unlike Nigeria that no one sees as his nation.

Oodua Republic will be prosperous and great.
Biafra Republic will be prosperous and great.
Niger Delta Republic will be prosperous and great.

The north, I don't know about that. But because of my good heart, I pray they prosper and become great, though their behavior does not guarantee that.

Nigeria should break up before 2023.

Years back when u read Lee Kuan Yew but book From Third World to First I came to realize that the development of a country depends not the it's natural resources but on its leadership style. Lee Kuan Yew was one man who transformed Singapore to it's present advancement cos he was patriotic unlike Nigerian leaders.
But unfortunately we don't have Lee in Nigeria.

But I believe that if Malaysia and Singapore didn't divide, Singapore would still be poverty ridden region in Malaysia
