As Nigeria’s secret police and politicians celebrated attacking Sunday Igboho’s home and arresting Nnamdi Kanu, Toyota was commissioning an assembly plant in Ghana to sell more cars in Nigeria.
The ceremony took place at Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing Company Limited at Freezones Enclave, Tema.

Ichiro Kashitani, president and chief executive officer of Toyota Tsusho Corporation, announced in 2019 that the company will start assembling its vehicles in Ghana from August 2020.

The decision to establish the assembling plant in Ghana was announced at the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 7), in Japan, where President Muhamadu Buhari had, in a meeting with Kshitani, asked Toyota to establish a plant in Nigeria.

Akufo-Addo had said the signing of the MoU with Toyota Tsusho falls in line with the vision of making Ghana an automotive hub for West Africa and the larger African market.

Volkswagen, Nissan, Sinotruck and Katanka are other vehicle brands have sited assembly plants in Ghana.

In April, Hyundai and KIA, South Korean multinational automotive manufacturers, announced plans to establish assembly plants in Ghana by the end of 2022.

In recent times, Ghana, Nigeria’s neighbouring West African country, seems to be the preferred destination of foreign investors.

This might be a blessing in disguise for Nigeria in the long run as we may have a well developed auto industry without foreign competition since we have players like Innoson, Nord etc ... But they are not competitive for now since it's a highly technical industry.

In the short run however, Ghana could be the hub for West African auto exports for at least another 20 years cos Nigeria loves Toyota vehicles and Japanese cars in general and with a population of about N200 million and 10x that of Ghana, we are West Africa itself grin

If our federal government were smart, now would be the time to offer incentives to auto makers like Nissan, Honda as well as getting Volkswagen (which already has a plant in Ghana) up and running by any means possible...

"We are a typical case of one who's chasing rats while his house is on fire. The regime has put so much energy in coercing everyone to sing One Nigeria, as if it brings special benefits. We are not working on things that could make One Nigeria a natural song, instead we are creating doubts and distrust, both by actions and inactions.

Even in developed nations, thers are pockets of agitations, but achieving strategic objectives of a nation state mutes those agitations; unfortunately our political leadership is more concerned with amplifying agitators.

We have been losing in various fronts, Nigeria seems to be the only big country in the world that is never taking seriously; something to think about".

COPIED!

Barcelona2021:
Nigeria has a Toyota assembly plant; Elizade motors.

An assembly plant is different from a car stand for sales. Elizade is the leading automobile sales private company in Nigeria dealing mainly in tropicalized Toyota Brands.
