24 people have reportedly escaped death when two separate buildings under construction collapsed in Anambra State, Newspremises understands.

A two-storey building collapsed in Amikwo village, Awka, the state capital in the early hours of Wedneday, July 7 while another two-storey building also collapsed in Oko, Aguata Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday, July 6.

Four persons were reportedly trapped inside the debris in the Oko building but were rescued with injuries, while about 20 persons reportedly escaped death in that of Amikwo.

The Amikwo building reportedly collapsed at about 2 am, falling on part of an occupied nearby two-storey building.

Though no life was lost, building materials worth millions of naira were wasted in the unfortunate incident.

Newspremises gathered that the first floor of the two storey building sank into the ground, while the remaining portion fell and is leaning on a neighbouring two storey building with occupants.

While blaming the collapse to poor mixture and reinforcement, the occupants said that for fear of the unknown, many of them stayed outside till morning.

The Amikwo building has been sealed by officials of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA).

Managing Director, ACTDA, Ven Amaechi Okwuosa, who confirmed the incidet revealed that the building had been under construction for the past ten years and was marked for demolition in 2018.

“Although the developer had commenced demolition of the building, the right equipment was not used, hence the collapse,” he said.

While appreciating God that there was no casualty, Venerable Okwuosa stressed that there are many such buildings which have being marked by their engineers.

Okwuosa pledged the agency’s commitment to ensuring the structural integrity of buildings done in the state capital territory.

Reacting to the Oko incident, Executive Chairman of Anambra Physical Planning Board, Chike Maduekwe, blamed the incident on a compromise on structural integrity.

He said the structure had since been sealed, while development partners had been invited for questioning.

The ministry in charge of Building inspection is such a useless one that have subjected themselves to daily bread hunt instead or genuinely inspecting sites. Go round and see alot of poor building plans and structure because they have been settled. Lagos is the worst hub. How can a building that is not yet completed be crashing? How long before it kill the residents ? Building Material quality control in Nigeria is another hazard. SON is not trying on building material quality control

God no go ever shame his children. Sometimes i do wonder why some engineers could be so heartless to use substandard material and build a house even when good morning was given to them, they will prefer to use that person's money for their personal use and use little part of the money to build substandard home for someone. Such criulty isn't good

Some clients do not have respect for construction standards. They’re always building in a rush!

Likewise, some contractors and builders are greedy.

______

I share this thought elsewhere and I felt I should drop it here. We can’t just continue with the blame game, we need to find a lasting resolve.

n3xt:

I’d never blame any contractor, subcontractor, supervisors or builder nor materials for failure on my personal build. I’d take full responsibility for whatever happen in my build knowing that I, the homeowner is the project director.

I pick all the pieces so I should take ownership of whatever happen.

Until we start jailing homeowners whose projects suffered collapse (whether partial of full), we won’t be able to stop this madness in our country.

The speed at which greedy and inexperienced contractors use substandard materials on largely disturbed soil to build unapproved structures in our dear country is very alarming.

Over 90% of homeowners do not have approval for their buildings (it’s a known fact) neither do they bother to invite relevant authorities (especially the sleepy ones COREN, CORBON, NIA etc) for stage certification and material testing.

What exactly is wrong with us?
And we are condemning China that built stackable 10 storey building in 28 hours when we are yet to perfect the construction of ordinary 2 floor building using concrete o

Sigh!

Unqualified engineers everywhere.

One was bragging some years ago that he was a building engineer until his poorly constructed gutter in front of his house opened his yansh.

North & South
Your fellow Southerner is in a position to give you employment.
You go to him for employment.

You speak good English and write an excellent application letter to impress him.

He tells you to bring your qualifications.

You bring your First Degree (First Class or second class).

He tells you to go and do your Masters and even PhD for you to get the job.

ON THE OTHER HAND

A Northerner is in a position to give employment.

An Hausa Man goes to him.

He speaks Hausa to him.

He tells him to bring his qualifications.

He brings a third class degree or an SSCE with two Credits.

He gets the job and saves money to further his education.

He gets a Masters Degree while doing the job.

Tomorrow, he is appointed as Executive Director.

Ten years Later, he becomes Chairman or DG of the Agency.

The Southerner sees this and hates on the Hausa Man.

He accuses him of nepotism.

But that's not nepotism.

That's communalism.

Southerners must understand the difference between nepotism and communalism.

Helping your Brother to succeed is not nepotism.

Southerners just need to learn how to love one another like Northerners do.

Stop hiding opportunities from your people.

Northerners do not hide opportunities from their people.

The engineer and the government ministry that approved the building should be punished.
Buy unfortunately, This is Nigeria, nothing will be done to them.

Everyone on the building site is an "Engineer ".

When people don't hire professionals, or when so called professionals cut corners, this is what happens

So sad. Thank God no life was lost.

But things like this will always happen because people trade quality for quantity.

Secondly, most people will give their uncle or brother who isn't a qualified engineer to build for them.

Do you think people who spent 5 years in university to study civil engineering did it for fun?

You will see architect will draw a building plan for a client and still want to handle the project.

So what then becomes of the structural engineer?

Building bungalow is different from building a story building o.

Another factor is quality of the mixture.

In other to save cost people tend to reduce the quantity of cement.

Then another one people don't know is that most bags of cement have reduced in quantity (weight).

How many people weigh their dangote bags of cement before building?

Almost none.

But verily I say unto you, there's serious fraud going on there.

50kg bag of cement is no longer 50kg o.

Unless you're buying from the factory yourself.

These days most major distributors have started rebagging.

Well, I'm outta here.
