IMO PUBLIC SAFETY STORM ABATTOIR CATTLE DEALERS ASSOCIATION, OWERRI; INSPECTS FACILITIES.

In the renewed spirit of ensuring safety of Imolites, Imo Public Safety team led by the Special Adviser to Imo State Governor on Public Safety, Hon. Prince Ugochukwu Nzekwe today 7th July, 2021 stormed Abattoir Cattle Dealers Association, Egbu Road, Owerri to inspect the activities of the cattle slaughter house.

In his speech, Hon. Nzekwe insisted that the best hygiene practices must be ensured both in standard of meat and the environment. "After several warning, we still see people transporting meat uncovered with reports of dealers killing and selling unhealthy cattle for human consumption", the Safety boss queried. People are sick everyday because of what they eat and the environment they stay. The safety boss assured the dealers of the readiness of government to support them and give the association a facelift.

The Imo Abattoir Dealers under the chairmanship of Mr. Onyewuchi Anyanwu expressed great joy for the visit noting that the Shared Prosperity Government of Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma really have the interest of Imolites at heart. Mr. Anyanwu informed the audience on illegal private slaughter houses spread across the State where cattle are slaughtered unchecked, claiming that his members do not indulge in such actions. The association agreed to liase with appropriate firm to produce thick nylon for covering meat during transportation as well as maintaining standard and hygiene.

Furthermore, the association begged the safety boss to redeploy safety officers who will help their veterinary doctors inspect and monitor the activities of the abattoir.

The secretary of the association, Hon. Vitus Okoro claimed that government often look down on butchers and their needs not properly looked into. " This is State abattoir and government presence should be largely felt here. We have doubled efforts in hygiene and standard since our last meeting with Imo Public Safety ", the Secretary added.

Hon. Nnanna Paschal, a director in Public Safety Office urged the association to forward all necessary report for immediate action reminding them that they slacked back and couldn't forward any comprehensive report as earlier discussed.

The Governor's aide with his team went round the premises to inspect the various facilities including the ongoing construction of toilets, waste management, borehole, slaughter room and so on. It was agreed that a joint task force will be considered to collaborate with security agencies to arrest and persecute illegal slaughter owners that kill cattle without veterinary inspection and other acceptable practices.
