Sleeping less than 6 hours a night in middle age may increase your risk of having dementia 25 to 30 years down the line, a solid UK research warns. Statistically, 10,000,000 new cases of dementia are reported worldwide yearly. There has been growing evidence supporting the link between poor sleep and dementia. These concerns are pertinent considering the carefree attitude of many people to sleep. It is increasingly becoming fashionable or trendy for people to boast about not getting the recommended amount of sleep for their age. Dementia is a syndrome that interferes with cognitive or mental processes. This results in deterioration in thinking, remembering and reasoning skills.

Certainly, there are other factors that are associated with dementia. In fact, Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia. However, insufficient sleep is a trigger for dementia. The truth is that the loss of memory, language or problem solving skills may or will not be plainly apparent but then sleep patterns and poor sleep habits earlier in life will expose you to a greater risk of dementia in later life. According to a review published in Nature communications, people who slept six hours or less in their 50s, 60s, and 70s had a 30% higher risk of dementia than those who slept seven hours. Also in the publication, it is reported that time spent sleeping is linked to dementia in older adults (65 years and above).

The relationship between sleep and your health

But a lack of quality could mess up your immune system and consequently your health. Poor sleep habits such as alcohol or caffeine consumption before bedtime, smoking, late night feeding, inconsistent sleep schedule and so forth will disrupt your sleep cycle hence reduce the quality of your sleep. Also, If you constantly wake up feeling groggy and grumpy this is a sign that you are not getting enough sleep. Sleeping poorly can also be as a result of a poor quality mattress.
