Doris Akonanya was involved in an accident when she was 13 years old. The incident was so terrible it damaged one of her legs so badly that amputation was the only resort to try to save her life.

Young Doris was going to the market with her elder sister when a motorcycle hit her and broke her leg. At the hospital, she pleaded with the doctors to not cut her broken leg because she desired to have a career in acting and film making. She thought that being an amputee was a disadvantage or a hindrance to living her dreams.

Doris's leg was amputated and it left her heartbroken. She sulked for a while until someone told her about Nick Vujicic, the Australian televangelist and motivational speaker, born with no arms and legs.

Doris felt motivated after she saw that Nick could swim and do so many other different things despite not having arms and legs. She thought herself special for having two hands and a leg. Therefore, she challenged herself to achieve her own dreams.

When Doris gained admission into the university to study Theatre Arts, many of her course mates were surprised. They wondered how someone with one leg could cope, especially because of the fact that the course involved acting and dancing. According to her, some of her course mates advised her to change her course and apply to study Accountancy or related departments that were not as physically demanding.

That was not to be because she had been influenced by Genevieve Nnaji and Ini Edo right from childhood, therefore, she was motivated not by what people said but by her belief in working and fighting for her dreams.
