Richard Branson set off for the edge of space Sunday in a flight aimed at spurring a new, multibillion-dollar space-tourism industry.

A Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc. airplane took off from the Spaceport America launch facility at 10:40 a.m. ET after a weather delay, carrying the British entrepreneur and five other crew members in the VSS Unity spacecraft.

The launch plane, called the VMS Eve, will climb to an altitude of about 8.5 miles before releasing Unity around an hour after takeoff. The spacecraft is then expected to rocket to an altitude of more than 50 miles.
