It makes more sense for the Edo state Government to keep it since where the bronzes were taken are now under their jurisdiction.

The reason it should not be handed over to the Oba of Benin is because the traditional system has no recognized role under the constitution and there are no checks and balances to check the excesses of the traditional body. For instance, what stops the present Oba from keeping those bronzes as his personal property if handed over to him.

When the artifacts were made, there was nothing like Edo government. Obaseki and FG are only after the artifacts because they want to resell them to another country and loot the money. I think China is already on the waiting list of the countries that want to buy them

We don't even have preservation materials, which means we would be importing them.

It also costs money to store them. Although not much money; around 30 dollars a year.

Where will the Oba get all that money? From the state government which struggles to make something out of limited allocations, or the FG which is battling inflation and post-recession challenges?

Bring those artefacts to Nigeria, and watch them disintegrate or lose their gloss in a year.

It's bronze, not some wooden item that will be eaten by termites. If the Benin people did not take care of them before they were stolen, how would they have been stolen in the first place. Our forefathers had already achieved a lot in technology before the colonialists came. We were already performing surgery; we had developed our own anaesthesia.

It was when the foreigners came that they banned African technology and forced their own technology down our throats.

So, don't even compare yourselves to our forefathers. No one knew what technology they used to maintain those bronzes. Even it still baffles the British who used to suspect that it was the Portuguese who guided them.

But it was not the Portuguese. Africa was already advancing in technology. Our type of technology.

After colonialism, the Europeans instituted imperalism. And that is what makes us to continue to depend on their own type of technology.
