some nurses involved in surgery get as high as 350k per mnt, perioperative nurses. nurses in a federal institution earns btw 120-350, i have my facts. thats why we fought for relativity, I am a senior resident in one of the federal hospitals , so i have a bit of privy info, the private sector and some lgas pay peanuts, as states begin to approve or modify conmess, the pay wud also improve too

In the private hospitals which prefer to employ auxilary nurses, they pay 30k or less to RN, 40k to Bsc nurses for over 10 hrs per day wit few off days(i.e big private hosp in Abuja), FG hospitals can start you on 70k nd above. The NGO's pay well nd in dollar almost lyk abroad. National hosp & state house clinic pay big too but u need a letter frm a minister or top politician. Nurses are under payed. If u want gud pay u must get more qualification, e.g RN=3 nd half years, + any specialty=2yrs,+ Bsc=4yrs. Total 10 yrs of study. The educational system is not gud. Not evrybody can get into university to get BSC.

Thank you for that question.
Firstly which nursing qualification do you have , is it HND nursing, Bsc Nursing, auxillary nursing (nurse Eliza)
Secondly, do where do u want to work, company hospital, private hospital, FG hospital, chemist.

HND nursing+private hospital average pay/month-10k
HND nursing+FG hospital-13k
Bsc nursing+FG hospital-25k
Bsc nursing+private hosp-15k
Bsc nursing+company hospital-50k(depending)
HND+Company hosp- 35k
nurse eliza+chemist- self employed
All are subject to years of experience and promotion which could improve pay.
But if u are out side Naija pay rates are much higher with better recpect.
In uk minimun pay is 12-15 pounds per hr.
In the US mnimum pay is 20-25 dollars per hour

THIS IS SERIOUS cry cry cry

I used to know a girl that was a nurse in a state hospital in Katsina and her pay, about 5 years ago, was N10K per month.

I think her profile is this:

HND nursing+State hospital

You are right my brother, i wonder if Sartorious is current, I have sisters that are nurse working with a Teaching hospital and a federal medical center, yet they don't earn half that much after nothing less than 15 years of service.

In fact, private hospitals pay peanuts, from 10 - 50 k.

Salary for nurses have improved. N350 may be possible for matrons with the new CONHESS. There is no nurse whose start up is less than 30k esp B.Sc. holders

dude, the figures you are quoting must have been like 5 years old.

The new payment system is the COMHESS and its relatively good in government hospitals. Nurses can aspire to be Chief Nursing Officers in hospitals or Director of Nursing Services in health services boards.

Here at UATH Teaching Hospital, a Matron earns about N300,000 a month. It was a hell of a fight for them to get their review salary scale like the doctors. In fact their struggle paid off for all categories of hospital staff from administrative, support and others as they got their remuneration reviewed as well.

I agree with you. Nurses are well paid nowadays.

Common man, the new minimum wage is 18k for anybody in Civil Service so how will a professional like a Nurse earn anything less than that?

Wow, if a CNO(level 14) earns 300k, I wonder how much an Asst. Director(Level 15) nurse earns, let alone a Deputy Director(Level 16)?
It is outrageous though that there is no Level 17 Nursing position in the federal civil service). I strongly believe there ought to be a Directorate position there, titled 'Director of Nursing Services', a level 17 position. This would then give a nurse an equal chance of being appointed a permanent secretary and later as a head of service of the federation.

I'll seriously advise that you get a Masters degree and if possible a doctorate there in the states(even if its an 18 months DNP) and then move into teaching in Ngr. Doctoral trained nurses in ngr are rare to come by and so schools will grab you immediately.
A friend just finished his Phd in Nursing here in Canada and jokingly sent three applications with resume to three high ranking federal universities in naija, come see calls and grabbings. He eventually settled with one in southern part of the country. Salary? Btwn 350 and 400k naira/mth as a senior lecturer. 'Textbook and handout' and probably a part-time position in one or two more univs/schools of nursing no follow this amount ohh. Girl, this is ya best option. Otherwise, u might want to train in ICU or CVICU in the states in addition to ya BScN in order to capture a good job in a big multi national in ngr (if u don't want to go into teaching).
Hope that helps.

IF NURSES IN AMERICA ONLY WORK 40HRS WEEKLY LIKE THEIR MATES IN NIGERIA (MY CONCENTRATION IS LAGOS STATE), NURSES WILL NEVER BE APPEALLING TO ANYONE BECAUSE NIGERIAN NURSES WILL SURELY BE FAR BETTER THAN THE US NURSES WITH ALL THEIR BRAGADO.

REMEMBER IN AMERICA, CHECKS COMES IN ONCE WHILE BILLS GOES OUT TWICE.

MY WIFE IS A MATRON IN ONE OF LAGOS MAJOR HOSPITAL WITH OVER 10 YRS OF EXPERIENCE AND SHE MAKES GOOD MONEY THAT IS OK FOR HER, DRESS WELL, RIDES A GOOD CAR AND STILL HAVE TIME FOR HER FAMILY WHICH IS A RARE COMMODITY FOR US NURSES.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I BELIEVE IS CONTENTMENT WHICH IS A VERY SCARCE COMMODITY AMONG US NURSES IRRESPECTIVE OF WHERE EVER YOU LIVE ON THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH.

My Mum is a Nurse. She's earning almost 200 thousand Naira. Although She is a senior matron and held other post like PRO. She is working at a state hospital even though she went to school of nursing. Its Kinda complicated, she's doing some other programmes. NURSES ARE BEAUTIFUL. I LOVE MY MUM.
@Nipeks: Thanks so much. I can relate to that as well with my mum retiring as a Snr Matron (after many years of stagnation at SNO level) albeit at such a low salary in those days!

As a doctor, i respect nurses so much.Theirs is one of the most thankless jobs in the health sector. I'm glad about the pay im reading on this forum, It usede to be pathetic in those days.
@reindeer: It's reassuring to see such positive posting.

@ Poster
Whilst the pay might not be that great, it's a wide area job, stressful and satisfying.
Therez diff btw schl of nursing, HND, BSc nurses.

It will be great for you to consider some specialisations and further study (eg master) once you're in it to boost your commanding reasonable salary over time

True.
Re: How Much Do Nurses Earn In Nigeria? by Nobody: 9:27am On May 16, 2011
@kristonium is correct. As for me, i happen to be a medical doctor, but you will always find me in webmasters sha. I spend most of my time in the IT world, it is only when i see posts like this that remind me. . . .
Meanwhile, those nurses that dont have Bsc and much experience - i have never seen them in general/teaching hospitals - i think they are limited
to private hospitals where they are paid peanuts. It is really a tough world for nurses in this our own part of the world.
And it is not like it is that easy for doctors too, if you are not a specialist and want to rely on PP, many hospitals pay like 50k/month for you to do
night calls every day of the week, and some will even add alternate weekends to it.
You get paid better if you are a specialist, but omo mehn, to become a specialist doctor no be beans mehn. . .

Anyway sha, design your websites at www..net / and dont call me if you get headache. . .

NP is a great option. Although its not officially recognized in nigeria, it gives you ample strength and all the advantages when it comes to medical surgical nursing and health assessment. With this and ya computer background, you might want to add a post-masters (takes 6-8 mths of full time studies) degree in Nursing/Health Care informatics, and you'll be ready to roll. Trust me, this area of healthcare (with specific emphasis on nursing) information systems has great potential of becoming a hot cake in the near future in Nigeria.
I don't have current information on whether multinationals in ngr have started utilizing electronic health recording systems(but I believe they should) but it has great potentials with limitless earning potentials. Think about possibilities of consulting for big private and govt hospitals in setting up modern electronic health information systems, Think about possibilities of consulting for institutions and hospitals when it comes to manpower training as well. With your NP background, think about possibilities of consulting for institutions when it comes to setting up and use of modern day facilities and equipment. Great potentials, trust me.

Actually nurses are not well paid in Nigeria. Most private hospital utilise thenurses without much pay, ranges from 5 thousand to 20 thousand or more depending on the standard of the private hospital. The state government hospital pays around 30 thousand upward depending on the cader or years of experience. While the federal government hospital pay minimum of 80 thousand to the lowest cader and upward(chief matron around 200 thosand naira).Oil companies pays much more around 300 thousand and upward.
Nurses in the US,UK and Australia earn much more 25 to 30 dollars per hour and with losts of incentives.

This electronic thing is being undertaken as a project by some agencies not too long ago, but due to naija factors - it is still a bit slow coming up.
As a website developer+programmer with a good IT background, this is the kinda project i can handle, but for now, i dont want to get mixed up in some crazy politics thing going on.
I will still be watching from the sidelines, however, when i am ready, i will do the electronic recording system the way it should be done.
