Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, fled Nigeria to Benin Republic to avoid being killed, a monarch close to the Yoruba rights activist told The PUNCH.

The monarch said Igboho was “forced” to leave the country, noting that the agitator was ready to continue the fight against killer herdsmen.

According to the monarch, there was a division among Igboho associates before he left the country.

While some said he should stay back to fight, others, especially his kinsmen, aligned with the thought that he should leave the country.

The respected monarch said Igboho did not leave the country immediately the Department of States Services raid his home as insinuated.

He said, “He didn’t want to leave for Benin Republic. He preferred to face the battle in Nigeria but we felt the manner DSS raided his house and killed people was dangerous for him. We actually forced him to flee because of his safety. They went as if they were directed to either kill him or bring him alive.”

When asked if asking Igboho to flee would not affect the self-determination agitation, he said, “Yes, we want Yoruba Nation, but not at the expense of anyone’s life. There would not have even been an agitation if the government lived up to their responsibilities.”

On the choice of Benin Republic, he said, “We have Yoruba-speaking people there. We have monarchs who still have ancestral traces to Nigeria. The Ooni and Alaafin still have a strong influence on some of their monarchs and we are of the belief that it was the best option. The monarchs gave him all the support he needed and we appreciate that.”

When asked how Igboho crossed Nigeria border to Benin Republic, he said, “Eledumare (God) did it.”

Igboho is currently facing charges on immigration offences in Benin Republic after he was arrested on Monday, alongside his wife, Ropo. However, his wife has been released.

Following the bloody raid on Igboho’s Sooka residence, the Department of State Services also arrested and detained 13 of Igboho’s associates, adding that during a “gun duel,” it had killed two of Igboho’s supporters later identified as Adogan and Alfa.

DSS had presented seven AK-47 rifles allegedly recovered during the raid on Igboho’s house on July 1, as well as three pump-action guns, 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines, 5,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, five cutlasses, one jack-knife, one pen knife, two pistol holsters, a pair of binoculars, a wallet containing $5, local and international driving licences in his name, ATM cards, a German residence permit No. YO2N6K1NY bearing his name, two whistles, 50 cartridges and 18 walkie-talkies.

Others were three charm jackets/traditional body armour, two laptops, one Toshiba and one Compaq laptop, Igboho’s passport and those of his aides.

Elrufai was giving money to fulani herdmen to stop killing Nigerians. DSS do not deem it fit to go after them and blow up their skulls, instead, Gunmi and Katsina Governor were taking pictures with them and paying them more money to expand jihad. Their atrocities surely will be revisited on them, they shall find no hiding place.

I still don't understand how a man who has been arresting DSS and military personnel around his home and rallies will now be running from DSS again

The worst use of pronouns.

No nouns! Just follow-up pronouns.

It is funny and yet after all he did, he did "nothing" to elicit any action from DSS.

It's good that he ran to Benin Republic for his own safety.

But all I have to say is that whatever you wish others or say about others to mock them have a way of coming back to you.

God is really wonderful.

The same way Nnamdi Kanu fled, the reason why we are discussing about Sunday is because he didn’t succeed.

This useless good for nothing Nigeria government, raided Kanu house and killed people in his house, used the same modus operandi on Sunday and some foolish low life idiots want Sunday to stay and fight. Why didn’t Kanu stay and fight back when soldiers raided his house? .

Masses don’t worth fighting in the first place, masses are contented in their chains of poverty, hardship and they even smile while they(masses) suffer. The same masses Kanu and Sunday are fighting for want them to fail and be killed.

When the masses are tired of their chains, they know what to do. But right now masses are still in love with their oppressors and their chains.

These are the people that incite innocent Nigerians who have nowhere to go if anything happens here.

Nnamdi Kanu, Sowore, and Ighobo all have permanent residence in the West; UK, US and Germany respectively. They have somewhere they can run to when Nigeria is on fire, then return after the fire to lead the Nation.

My main concern are the willfully stupid people who follow these guys. Even when they run abroad and start broadcasting from abroad and even start calling those still in Nigeria cowards for not confronting the same soldiers they ran away from, they still have followers.

The level to which people are gullible is alarming. I mean I actually fear for my life living with stupid people like those who support any of these.

How anyone still supports them is a cause for concern. It is very dangerous to live among people that are that manipulatable.
It is way too risky to live with foolish people. Especially when they add insincerity to their foolishness so that they can join their father's enemy to pull down their father's house just because they dislike one of the tenants
