Originally it's true, the original bight of Biafra is the coastal areas of the southsouth, since southsouth and south east used to be one in the past, they gave the defunct country a name from the southsouth to show solidarity apart from that the name was brought about by an ijaw man.

They did this to ensure togetherness.

Many people don't know that the original name of Bight of Benin was bight of Biafra, but it was changed by the Nigerian government to erase any traces of the Biafra

You are mixing it up. Bight of Biafra was changed to bight of bonny

Well it is OK to borrow a name from a neighbouring tribe.

Gold Coast borrowed the Ghana name from the defunct Ghana empire in West Africa that was not anywhere near the territorial geography of modern Ghana.

Dahomey borrowed the Benin name from the defunct Benin empire in West Africa that is currently within Nigeria. So Dahomey became Benin Republic.

So I see nothing wrong that an Ijaw will provide the Igbos the name to call their Igboland, from the now defunct coastal description called Bight of Biafra.

I swear this was what came to mind on reading the headline.
That's why learning history is very important

Dokubo, in a brief interview with Arise Television, monitored by POLITICS NIGERIA on Wednesday, revealed that the term 'biafra' was coined by an Ijaw man and was originally proposed by the Ijaws and not the Igbos. He also criticized the leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB for wanting to create an 'Igbo biafra'

The name "BIAFRA" was suggested to Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu by Chief Frank Opigo, an Ijaw man when the people of the Eastern region were deciding on the way forward prior to the Biafran genocide. But prior to that, you have maps of the west coast of Africa from the 14th to 19th centuries showing Bights of Benin and Biafra. That being said, I find it extra ordinarily disconcerting that the same people that are quick to claim the origin of the name (BIAFRA) would deny that they are NOT BIAFRANS. How IDIOTIC could that be? To remind Asari Dokubo, there's never been a time that Igbos lay claim that they are the ONLY Biafrans. No, it's your folks that want to distance themselves from the name for whatever reasons best known to them. So, please if you want to tell the truth, then tell the whole truth....not half truths.

Below is a link of the Map of Africa in 1805.

"Dahomey borrowed the Benin name from the defunct Benin Empire." This is hardly accurate. Dahomey had to be changed since "Dahomey" was a Kingdom of the Fon people (just one of the ethnic groups in the country) and it wouldn't be proper to collectively call all the ethnic groups in the country Dahomeans. So, the solution was to choose a neutral name that would give other ethnic groups a sense of belonging, and they settled for "Republique du Benin" since it was located on the "Bight of Benin". So, no, it's erroneous to say "Dahomey borrowed the Benin name from the defunct Benin empire' without telling the whole story.

God bless Asari Dokubo aka Alabo-Ediabali for saying this raw truth and fact.

Biafra as a name belongs to Ijaw. Ask all these Igbos shouting biafra the meaning of it they don't know just that Their fugitive leader told them to be calling biafra.

How can I be part of what I doesn't know the meaning and something that has links to Ijaw people ( James Manager comes to mind)...A name with no single meaning in Igbo language.

Even Idiots want to claim to be intellectuals.

For those who care to know, the name Biafra was in existence before the British set foot in West Africa.

It is an adaptation of the name of the Portuguese home city of Mafra. Early explores, including the English often adored the rainforest plains southeast of the Niger and often saw their home country in them. Some English writers described the Igbo homeland as "lovely green open country."

Just like the Portuguese named Lagos, they also referred to the Eastern homelands as Biafra, in reference to Mafra. More importantly, is that these betrayed the true intentions of these explorers to convert these places to their homes as they did in Australia, Canada, and almost did in South Africa.

There was no kingdom of Biafra, neither was the name specifically political, indigenous nor traditional. It is foreign Nor was it limited to the coastal lands, as nobody names a Bight after the fringe lands but the main lands.

So I as an Igboman would readily reconsider the name Biafra as it Carries heavy reference to colonial interference and land usurpation. However, generations before mine have rallied to this flag, and made it sacred, hence my generation has made a compromise that this name will eventually end as

"Biafu" meaning "Come and See" - a promise to our lands and reference to our "Resilence, Igenuity and Awesomeness" to become the first black nation to rise from the ashes of colonization to become a first world nation.

So yes, it's a Portuguese word just like Lagos, and Benin. But we have chosen to own it, and Igbonise it!

You are simply saying same thing, they borrowed the word, why does not matter. By Asari Dokubo's standard it should have been Bight of Iteskiri, since they were at the coast, lol.

Further more, The name Benin, formerly spelt Benen is also Portuguese, in case you are wondering. The real people actually refer to themselves as "Edo"

And the Bight of Benin is named after which Benin?

So whatever route you take, you will still arrive at the fact that Republic of Benin is a borrow of the name Benin from the defunct empire that is in present day Nigeria.

This pig is right, the Bight of Biafra (officially called the Bight of Bonny, is a bight off the West African coast, in the easternmost part of the Gulf of Guinea. It was where slave traders ship slaves to Europe.
Ojukwu in his greed to have the oil included ijaw lands to the igbo nation but he was betrayed by Ken saro wiwa and the ijaw kingsmen who did not want to be second class citizens.
Ojukwu chose the name Biafra to please the ijaws.
My advise for the igbos is to accept their five states and move on. The oil in Nigeria is a curse. the world is moving towards clean energy and the igbos are enterprising.
Does your ADMISSION mean that the igbos eyes are on ijaw Oil? That's why the attache by force has been on effect for some time.
