Students demand reps speaker from S’East

By Emmanuel Nzomiwu  Correspondent, Enugu

Confederation of Igbo Students (CIS) has demanded the position of Speaker of House of Representatives for South-East in the coming dispensation.

While congratulating President Goodluck Jonathan on his resounding victory at the polls, the group stated that it would amount to injustice on his part and a case of continued Igbo marginalization on the part of ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), if the position of Speaker is not zoned to South-East.

Igbo students in a statement signed by the National Coordinator, Mazi Chukwuemeka Eleweke, and National Secretary, Chukwudalu Anaekwe, warned that refusing to assent to South-East demand to produce the Speaker of House of Representatives in the forthcoming National Assembly, would not be the best way to reciprocate the overwhelming support given to him by Ndigbo against all odds.

CIS recalled that Ndigbo lost over 120 lives and property worth billions of naira in the recent post-election violence in the Northern part of Nigeria, not minding the fact that the decision of Ohanaeze to support Jonathan almost tore Ndigbo apart if not for the political maturity of Igbo elite.

The group stated: “The president’s lack of support for Ndigbo makes the loss more painful because the Igbo leaders who supported a Northern presidency in the just concluded 2011 presidential election, stated that the insecurity of Ndigbo in the aftermath of Jonathan’s possible victory as one of their reasons.

“Also, it would be a setback to the renewed fraternity between Ndigbo and the minority in parts of Niger Delta. It was in the spirit of cementing the bonds of brotherhood between them and their Eastern minority brothers that Ndigbo opted to support President Goodluck Jonathan so massively,” CIS stated.

It argued that it would amount to an aberration if the South-West, which voted massively for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and which has only five PDP members in the incoming House of Representatives, is considered before the South-East where PDP won overwhelming majority in the House of Representatives.

CIS therefore aligned totally with the House of Representatives that the South-East would accept nothing less than the Speakership of House of Representatives, adding that “as law abiding citizens of this country, we should avert this travesty of justice.”

so funny how these ex-kidnapper lords are coming out everyday under all sorts groups with empty rants!

SE/igbos are ever shortsighted politically and they will always be chasing shadows unless they humble themselves and learn from other zones who have calculatively positioned themselves to be a force to reckon with in nigeria for a long time to come.

Was this not the same SE that were shouting death to zoning just 6months back and are now clamouring for it simply 'cos they find thierself at the losers corner?

Why can't they protest the senate president seat ?

Why cant they protest against rigging?

Why cant they protest against corruption?

Why cant they protest against the Millions of Dollars the government officials make quaterly while they live on less than $2/day with no kind of social/welfare security from the Govt?

Why cant they protest the horrible way they are made to live in their own country?

Jesus! These are the future of the Ibo nation, a bunch of cows nourished on tribalism?! Sad, Sad, Sad. . . . I guess the Ibo nation is in for a loooooong ride!

Anyone who does not recognize the impact of students not only in Nigeria, but the world is a fool.

Was it not students that led to protest in Tunisia and Egypt that toppled regimes?

Was it not students on whose backs, Barack Obama was propelled into the presidency?

You have a lot to learn army grunt.

Thank God that Ndigbo youth understand the stakes.

We are not out there begging like the youth found in other sections of the country.

Why are they not protesting for post of Senate President?

When would Alaba boys and Okada riders too protest?
Re: Students Demand Reps Speaker From S’east by Dede1(m): 3:07pm On May 16, 2011
@POST

The so-called Confederation of Igbo Students is still behaving like some of the forbearers. The students should stop complaining and issuing empty threats. Rather they should start acting like youths and students from other region by arming themselves and letting their actions do the talking.
Re: Students Demand Reps Speaker From S’east by Rhino5dm: 3:17pm On May 16, 2011
Are you suffering from selective amnesia? geeez! You must be high on ash to be comparing those rag tag thugs with progressive minded youths of north Africa.
Those eastern thugs are working for their bellies and northing more.

Take a bottle of raw milk to make you sober. Shalom!

Na wao. Wahala dey o. Why has pdp allowed obj to use them to test ndigbo? I am really trying to understand. Must obj always have his way? To stop an ekwueme presidency, Ibb unleashed this monster on pdp and the nation and after goblin ibb himself is trying to destroy the country. Is this overheating of the polity necessary instead of just doing the right and fair thing? Gej must act now and rate the republic. May God help us.

I understand your sentiments.

People need to realize that the polity is heating up. Igbo anger is rising and it will reach a tipping point. This has been 40 years in the making.
