how many steel industries are functioning in Nigeria? Where is Ajaokuta? Where is Aladja? Who is in charge of them?. Can there be a functioning auto industry without a functioning steel industry? Auto industry don't just come over night, a good govt has a very active role to play by providing in infrastructure and good policies. The American govt rescued its auto industry during obama govt, even though it is a private industry, The economy has gone past 100percent free market "Adam smith" economy, now days, a good govt must do somethings to ensure a smooth working economy. Where is electricity in Nigeria? Where are the good roads? What is our ports capacity and efficiency? What good policies has the govt created? Cosmos maduka was regretting investing in the auto industry some months back, today the govt is out making false political statements about the industry and u are opposing my statement, I'm not daft.

Bro ... like you said ... governments provide the infrastructure and set the rules of operation. It is for the investor to decide if he will set up the business. Yes the US government directly injected money into the auto industry as well as the airline industry to rescue them ... not to establish them. My beef is with the regulations ... the FG should set the standards ... all electric/hybrid cars..... and conditions for establishing the plant ... environmental protection... community development.... training and employment of locals, etc. These half senile politicians need to go ... they are still living decades in the past.

Capacity & Competence are two different things!
How do you compete favorably when the exchange rates for parts, lack of electricity, poor standards monitoring, consumer high interest rate and government policy somersault makes imported used & new vehicles cheaper and better!!!!

Its not really, Nigeria purchasing power is low, we cannot afford brand u cars. fairly use car from US and UK are still cheaper than new car manufacture in Nigeria.

Unfortunately, govt's contribution to this is almost zero. This development, if it is true, is just the effort of private individuals. They sourced everything themselves and even power that should have been contributed by the govt is no where to be found.
Jelani Aliyu contributed immensely in reviving that sector, infact Jelani is responsible for designing most automobiles that fit Nigerian weather and environment, he is designs electric cars.
Without govt effort no private investment can prosper!

Which government puts money into the auto industry?... the US? ... Japan?

@ topic .... countries through their policies are setting dates and regulations and incentives to phase out fossil fuel cars. What will the manufacturers do with their soon to be obsolete assembly plants? ... sell them as scrap iron?.... or shift them to a back to the future country and continue generating income? They found us and here we are celebrating... what next?...

"NIGERIA TO ESTABLISH THE WORLDS BIGGEST DVD FACTORY."

My friend, I worked in the auto industry in the UK for 15 years from 2000-2015 and I can tell you that the UK government provided grants to local universities in Warwick, Coventry University and Birmingham University to support Auto R & D. The UK government built roads (M6, M40 and M42) that integrate auto manufacturing towns in Castle Bromwich, Solihull, Coventry, Shirley and Gaydon.

The supply chain that connects these towns was built by the regional and national UK governments, the fact that Jaguar Land Rover can source the majority of its parts from the surrounding towns.

65% of car manufacturing is made up of iron and steel, hence until Nigeria develop a steel industry forget about the automobile industry, we had one in the 1980s and that did not last long once Nigeria couldn't afford the cost of the CKD and steel imports.

Nigeria cannot build a sustainable auto industry with petrochemical plants, steel plants, electricity power, clean water, talented technicians and engineers that all require government support

Only few manufacture, others assemble.

ILLITERATE. Manufacturing and Assembly mean the EXACT SAME THING.

In the US car manufacturing plants are called ''car assembly plants''.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_automotive_assembly_plants_in_the_United_States

It is only in Nigeria that you bush people with inferiority complex invented a 'difference' between the two terms.

Everything you said is basically about government providing the infrastructure.... an enabling environment for the industry to develop and thrive.... which also includes the grants for universities to contribute to the industry. Pretty much the same applies in the US where the FG forna period of time subsidizes the cost of "new technology" cars. In NYC ... presently if you want to sign up with UBER and their kind... your car must be all electric .... only cars adapted for the handicapped can be fossil fueled.
On having steel ... who knows... maybe the cars will be all plastic. Should they import steel...... we know who can afford to bey
