It's still part of their constitutional roles. It's called internal security, MACA or MACP (as the US & UK) refer to it ie military aid to civil authority or military aid to civil power.

There's a serious breakdown of law and order in the SE and the inability of the police to contain it that necessitated such operations.

But you risked your life to approach any check points in high speed or with tinted glass not wind down. And having a government number plate still won't protect you if you refuse to obey simple safety guidelines, not even a military painted vehicle would have easy thoroughfare based on the experience of those guys in the NE. Anybody could hijack and used that to penetrate their ranks.

Sometimes, Nigerians unnecessarily come to harm with these security guys as a result of ego. From the statement of their boss it showed they behaved professionally. But remember the dead don't talk.
