I love this new approach to economics!

erhm, Mr President, how about the cost of taking Okada?. . it's getting too costly these days! sad  . . . . and while at it, do you suppose you could order landlords to "crash" rental costs too?

and oh, i don't mean to be greedy, really i don't, but Iya Basira's sells her fufu and egusi at an exorbitant price, she needs some spanking crashing orders sire!

sai Jonathan, na you biko, GEJ for 2015 and beyond, fresher air!!!!

read my first statement again dude. When did the economics of Nigeria start obeying the laws of economics? You should know by now that there is something called Nigerian Economics, which defies all laid-down economic principles.

If this directive was given to the filling stattions, then I will shout to the roof top that Mr. President is mad.

But in this case, he has given the directive to those who are responsible for the prices of the products.

Why would fuel still be N65 and Kerosine N145? The price going up is as a result of scarcity.

What is responsible for the scarcity? Who responsible for the scarcity?

If Mr President does not give directive to the NNPC, is he going to give to me?

If I am Mr. President, I will give the head of PHCN directives on improvement of Power Supply and if he cant perfomr, I'll look for another person.

Thumbs Up, Mr. President.

to insult your presidebt in a forum like this is not only stupid but unpatriotic. it is a sign of how low we have become as a nation
Re: Fg Orders Dpr, Nnpc To Crash Price Of Kerosene by Canisma(m): 8:56am On May 20, 2011
The problem with nairaland is that our national issues are been commented on by "foreign nigerians" who do not understand our polity. They talk as if they know what they re talking about. Bring home any of them to come and fix the nation and u ll see them going the way of dimeji bankole. Govt controls prices in Nigeria and the high price of kero is undoubtedly due to artificial scarcity. Under capitalist economy, it could be worst. Nigeria is unique and must not be compared with any nation at all. So pls my foreign brothers and sisters, first understand a national issue deeply before u comment. Thanks

stabilizing the fuel price stabilizd the transport fair accross the nation. and the price of all commodities that depend on petrol powered generators. so will the cement price crash bring down the price of renting a house accross the country. now kerosene has been hit. diesel and  PHCN is the next target. and we are up and moving in naija. Goodluck 4 life.

If only most of us could get as much information about a subject as we can before we comment. Some comment after reading just the title of a thread or news report (some of which are very wild).

Cement price may drop as NNPC increases diesel supply to producers

  UDEME AKPAN 20/05/2011 03:24:00

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has boosted the supply of diesel to support commercial production and distribution of cement in the country. The effort is directed at achieving the price reduction target handed down to cement manufacturers by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who made this known yesterday at an interactive session with journalists in Lagos said the Kaduna, Warri and Port Harcourt refineries are presently processing commercial quantity of diesel. Cement producers had blamed increased production and transportation cost on the high price of cement which had reached N2,500 per 50 kilogramme bag, up from N1,600 a year ago, citing rising diesel price which had climbed from N120 per litre to N175 per litre. Alison-Madueke, who confirmed the availability of commercial stocks in the country, said: “Today, all the refineries are producing diesel as we are only importing a little.

We have a 22-day storage capacity, which is good.” She, however, said the inability of the government to control the entire process was a major constraint. According to her, “The problem is the retail end of it. We need to be able to control it. What we can control is the bulk outputs as we give it out at N40 per a litre for kerosene, but they are selling at more than N100 per litre.

AGO is fully deregulated. You have the right to make profit but you do not need to profiteer”. The minister, however, said that necessary directive had been issued to the NNPC and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to sanitise the situation as soon as possible. She noted that though the country operates a free market economy, the Federal Government could not watch and fold its arms while innocent Nigerians go through hardship in accessing the vital cooking fuel due to the profiteering activities of some “middlemen”.

Allison-Madueke pointed out that: “Checks at the NNPC and its subsidiary, the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), indicate that we have enough in terms of product sufficiency. Our investigation shows that kerosene has however, become scarce and selling at high price due to distribution problems caused by middlemen who have made it their vocation to profiteer from the product.” As a way out, the minister charged the managements of the NNPC and the DPR to bring to an end the ugly situation within the next few days.

Under the arrangement, the NNPC through its subsidiary PPMC will ensure that products are loaded out from the three refineries and the coastal jetties to all the nooks and crannies of the country while DPR has the mandate to activate compliance measures and all necessary control strategies to squelch the incidents of arbitrary pricing and sharp practices. Already, the NNPC has swung into action by increasing the volume of kerosene allocation from 10 million litres to record 12 million litres per day to guarantee that the country has enough kerosene. The 12 million is in excess of the estimated national consumption level of about 10 million litres per day.

I did not vote for him but atleast he's saying something and by that it means he hears. Let's try giving him a chance. If in 2yrs nothing changes then the "ubanka and uwaka" can start.

Na wa o, initially it was cement , now it is Kersone and the problems are to be solved simply by a presidential order. No mention of the root cause, no mention of the strategy. There are many agents in supply chain who are not under the direct control of DPR/NNPC, no mention of how to deal with them.

It is too late to cry foul now as GEJ has already been elected, the only option is to bring this guys to order. Like Pres. Obama said during his Speech on Middle East and North Africa "Reform do not come at the ballot box alone".

This time FG is paying cos the cost of crashing the price will be offset by the FG.

This is where I hate freedom of speech. None of these thieving internet boys would have the right to insult an elderly man like GEJ if he was a Chinese Emperor. American economy started becoming stagnant the moment the citizens started cursing their presidents in the name of freedom of speech.

Apparently you also hate common sense.
You must also hurry to patent this your juju/software that enables you to know the ages and professions of contributors on an internet forum.

Talkatives. Sadly, none of you use or buy kerosene and the decision won't affect you a bit. You don't know what the majority of nigerians who use and buy the product go through.

It is quite sad, it is the same bunch of senile morons who would still criticize and insult GEJ if he did nothing about the price of kerosene. They can't profer positive solutions, they don't even know about nigeria, all they do is talk as if the country lacks sufficient arguments.

There's nothing in the story to suggest that the order came from the president himself. Just saying.

The order came from the FG, and GEJ is the head of the FG. So he must have approved the order before it was sent.

The order came from the petroleum minister.  The journalist said FG and the OP said GEJ
Maybe the credit (and blame, if it goes wrong) should go to the person the order came from?

I personally think such an order coming from the minister must have been given based on the instruction of the FG and off course who is the head of  federal government, so they are all in line . . . i want to suspect that the FG feels or must have investigated that the prize increase was artificial and deliberate by the marketers who suddenly have formed a cartel of some sort hence the need to read the riot act.  i want a scenario where market forces determines the prizes of fuel sources  but with our level of import of this energy sources, won't the masses even complain louder when the government decides to remove the subsidy and safe itself some money. The huge question people will ask is what has happened to the other saved money and. .safe the money where ? . .An average Nigerian would want to tell you that if the subsidy is one of the few things they can enjoy tangibly then so should it remain while the marketers are the biggest gainers. . .we need drastic change as a country but can we stomach the temporal discomfort this change will bring before we get to the comfort zone . . Often we desire dramatic changes with no will power to sacrifice a little . .that leaves us with a dilemma i guess.

One great post! But I dont think we are ready for it. Much of the prices in Naija are not due to market forces. It is down to mafia style businesses that have been the order of the day. GEJ will have to deal out orders like this for a while before the long term solutions start to take effect. PHCN is next. If they dont want change, they should all be fired. I mean it. We are ready to bear the pain till something new comes up.
