A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Barrister Olusegun Bamgbose, has described rumoured plans by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to field Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in the 2023 presidential race as a ploy to continue President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure by proxy.

Bamgbose said this in a statement he signed on Saturday.

He stressed that although 2023 was time for a Christian President of southern extraction, Osinbajo was a wrong choice due to being linked with Buhari.

Bamgbose, who argued that Osinbajo’s incumbent position was being usurped by the “cabals” of Buhari’s administration, stated that the same persons would disallow the Professor to satisfy the yearnings of Nigerians if he became president.

He called on Nigerians to reject plans by the APC to extend Buhari’s tenure by any means.

Bamgbose said: “Osinbajo won’t be allowed to create any meaningful impact as President, and will always be remotely controlled by some cabals in the government and will always pay homage to Buhari and the cabals in anything he does.

“The one million naira question is if he could not perform as Vice President, how sure are we that he will perform as President when the same cabals will still be in the corridors of power?

“Nigerians must stand up to say no to this grand conspiracy to extend Buhari’s tenure by proxy and reject any form of third term for Buhari.”

That will be a dangerous option for our darling Prof to associate with a known rapist of rule of law in the country.
There are so many other experienced professional economist that would be a fantastic pair to the Prof.

When Prof Osinbajo was the acting president, the "cabals" were present when he sacked Daura, having the security meeting to have all service Chiefs relocate to the insurgency areas, why wasn't he stopped in any way? I believe Prof is more confident and authoritative than he appears.

OBJ helped Yar Adua become President yet Yar Adua's first actions in office included reversing virtually everything OBJ had done and pushing the former President away.

Correct. It is Bamgbose's personal opinion and a logically flawed one as well. Some might call Nigeria a Jungle but it still has rules. Spoken and unspoken that political winners follow.

Malami was unknown before this regime. Within this regime he is known. Yet he is known infamously and negatively to most Nigerians especally Southerners.

Politocal strategists think diferently to most Nigerians. They eschew sentiments and focus on who/what wins elections.

Many Nigerians are shouting Osinbajo because he satisfies the rules. He was unknown before this regime. He is now known but known overall as a positive and progressive force and not a villainous one like Malami.

That rule strikes out Malami and explains the support Osinbajo enjoys for the top job the APC have no choice but to use if presenting a Southerner in 2023. Osinbajo has to be paired with a Northerner who has a positive current political image and useful electoral value.

Malami represents the task of trying to foist a son of Abacha on Nigerians while a Zulum-type is like using Ribadu as VP candidate after OBJ just left office and the former EFCC chairman's popularity was very high with all Nigerians having a lot of goodwill for him.

Indeed. Once he is the APC's legal Presidential candidate, voted in by delegates at the Party's primaries, then he is President in waiting and has to be carried along.

Buhari accepted Osinbajo to run with him in 2025 because Osinbajo was an electoral positive to a Northern candidate and not the controversial drawback Malami would be to any APC Southern presidential candidate in 2023.

Malami is seen as an overt enemy of the South who has never hidden his ill-wll towards the region from trying to frustrate Amotekun to comparing ban on open grazing to Igbos trading spare parts throughout Nigeria.
