It’s very strategic but not for the reasons you think. This was a “Political” attack on the government of El Rufai and the President to make them look bad and further the propaganda that Christians are being targeted. And I guess it is working going by the comments I am seeing on social media including yours.

Like I said, the “bandits” did not have to attack the NDA to kill Christian military personnel. There are thousands of them roaming the streets or living in unguarded homes, so why choose such a difficult location with fully armed defenders?
