it's a matter of your budget, and JBL itself is a brand, which model of JBL are you talking about? I think some soundbars have raised the bar. You can check this out since you said you can increase your budget

Get a home theatre, all those sound bars have good filters though but they are more suitable for self-contain rooms not a normal living room

I own an SRS-XB31 and i can attest to this. Portable but the bass is extremely good.

He can check the XB60. That's my next target.

Might be a bit pricy due to dollar exchange rates now but you can't go wrong with Sony bars.

As for the people looking for that ground thumping sounds...you would get that with the sound bars but if you want those ground quivering noises go for the party booster versions.
