It's tempting but misleading to judge the historical events of the 19th century with contemporary parameters.


1) What happened in Ilorin around 1820 and many other political entities of that era was a struggle between States/Kingdoms/Empires and not strictly an inter-tribal war as we now understand the tribes.

2) Alimi did NOT invade or even killed Afonja (Alimi actually died before Afonja).
The Ilorin Jaa'ma (Muslim Ummah comprising of people of different ethnic backgrounds) allied themselves with Sokoto Caliphate which was the nascent Muslim State just directly up north of Ilorin.

3) This Ilorin Jaa'ma did so to prevent themselves from being ruled further by Afonja , who though had relied on them and used them to secceed from Oyo Empire but nevertheless wasn't a Muslim himself and had no intention to become one.

4) The Ilorin Emirate under Abdusalami as Amir Al-Muslimi (the leader of the Muslims) and it's subsequent affiliation to the Muslim Sokoto Caliphate was constituted much more later after the death of Afonja.

6) With time, the Ilorin Emirate transformed from a Theocracy into a Monarchy just as it's often the case everywhere.

7) It should be noted that the Jihard of Usman DanFodio started as a religious war and not really an inter-tribal war.

If Yorubas are truly the majority in Ilorin, eventually they should start demanding that any oba or emir of Ilorin must be completely Yoruba, up to the person's grandparents.

Today, Ijaws are trying to take over Ubani (Bonny) and Opobo, which were clearly recorded by neutral European observers to be peopled originally by Igbos. The Nigerian system, totally corrupted by Fulanis have allowed the Ijaws to start claiming Bonny and Opobo. But if Igbos decide to lay aggressive claim on those territories, it will be proper, after all it has always been ours.

The same goes for Yorubas of Ilorin. The Fulani-controlled Nigerian system is trying to psychologically keep Fulanis, relevant in the cultural life of Ilorin. The Yorubas of Ilorin must never allow that to happen.

It's tempting but misleading to judge the historical events of the 19th century with contemporary parameters.


1) What happened in Ilorin around 1820 and many other political entities of that era was a struggle between States/Kingdoms/Empires and not strictly an inter-tribal war as we now understand the tribes.

2) Alimi did NOT invade or even killed Afonja (Alimi actually died before Afonja).
The Ilorin Jaa'ma (Muslim Ummah comprising of people of different ethnic backgrounds) allied themselves with Sokoto Caliphate which was the nascent Muslim State just directly up north of Ilorin.

3) This Ilorin Jaa'ma did so to prevent themselves from being ruled further by Afonja , who though had relied on them and used them to secceed from Oyo Empire but nevertheless wasn't a Muslim himself and had no intention to become one.

4) The Ilorin Emirate under Abdusalami as Amir Al-Muslimi (the leader of the Muslims) and it's subsequent affiliation to the Muslim Sokoto Caliphate was constituted much more later after the death of Afonja.

6) With time, the Ilorin Emirate transformed from a Theocracy into a Monarchy just as it's often the case everywhere.

7) It should be noted that the Jihard of Usman DanFodio started as a religious war and not really an inter-tribal war.
The Fulanis were a settler minority tribe in 1804 and the indigenous peoples would have closed ranks and killed them off if they had carried out the Jihard as a FULANI Vs Non-Fulani inter-tribal war.

Remember that Buhari put on the Nigerian toga around the 2015 presidential election, but once he got in, he threw it away and immediately became a Fulani champion.

That has always been the Fulani way. Fulanis were not the only muslims during the whole Usman Dan Fodio terrorism, but for some reason, all the territories conquered in the name of Islam became emirates headed by Fulanis.

Every excuse in the world, will be concocted by the Fulanis to throw a wool over the eyes of unsuspecting locals, to push them into getting rid of indigenous rulers, after which the Fulanis will immediately bring in a Fulani ruler

Exactly and I can tell you that Yoruba in Ilorin will Never allow it, just to let you know that even the Fulanis are aware that Kwara Ilorin down to Kogi where we have the Okun Yoruba people is Yoruba land and you will never forfeit their ancestral land to anyone, during the crisis that the North decided that they will stop food coming down South, it was River Niger they stopped because they know once they enter part of Kogi, then Yoruba land and Yoruba people are there. They are smart but it just a matter of time, Fulanis will be put in their place. Nigeria is the only country they have gat political power and it will be taken away from them just a matter of time.
