want to suggest that we doctors create a thread where certain hospitals are treating staff badly and refuse to pay for so that doctors can avoid these facilities. We doctors need to advocate for ourselves not only from Government but at times from ourselves. A hospital in Lagos,
I was poorly treated, received personal insults and disrespected in front of patients. I was also not PAID even though I contacted an illness and missed work. The complete lack of concern for my well-being was shocking.Too many hospitals are getting away with this treatment.

Good morning.

1.Were you a locum or full time staff?
2.How long did you work there?
3.What transpired before the insult began?

Goodmorning.
I initially started as locum, then became full time. It started very slowly, the blame games for mistakes made. Mistakes I take full responsibility for by the way. I will be lying if I said I was blameless. But the mistakes were broadcast in front of hospital staff and patients. Even in the reception area. Followed by laughter. I have to admit most of the other staff did not join in the fun. But one particular hospital staff (not a doctor) used it to his advantage.
. So what was the result? Nervousness and lack of confidence which led to more mistakes and more insults.Other responsibilities were now given to me to devalue me(cleaner and messenger work) so that 'I can be put in my place.' Assumptions about my lifestyle, my gender and my finances were put on blast in front of others. This was done to others as well. The lack of professionalism is shocking indeed. Na wa o. II had no recourse but to leave for my mental health. When I put in my notice lies were told. So add being unethical to the list. It was when someone told me of a similar occurrence with another doctor that I felt I had to post this.

That is an unprofessional place to start one's carrer. I bet the people doing that are not doctors.

It is a fact that the first few years post Nysc are still learning period. That is why it is better to have those few years under the guidance of fellow doctors because senior colleagues will know your limitations and call you in private to reprimand you. Atleast that was what my former boss did.

I urge you to use the pain to improve yourself and in few years time it will be "the hosipital" begging to have you.

No doctor was flawless.

The unfortunate thing is that the place is being run by a doctor. A senior colleague that should know better but is more invested in humiliating people . A really INSECURE and SAD individual. very vindictive. Frustrates workers so that they can leave and there is justification for NOT PAYING, though I can not prove this in any way. It is very repulsive behaviour. Looking back, I feel sorry for such a person that thinks this way. But will try and use the pain to improve myself. That is good advice.

Personally, I don't correct my junior colleagues in public.

I send them a message using my phone and when we want to talk,we do it behind closed doors.

I made mistakes when I was younger too. We all do.

I think doctors that behave in that manner have "internal/mental problems" .

Maybe he has family, financial issues and he pours it on others.

In any case you should learn to take criticisms.

Nobody likes us. Not patients, fellow health workers ,the government nor our family members.

Have a great day.
