Name Your Favourite Sci-fi And Fantasy Writers! by omoovie(f): 8:26pm On May 24, 2011
I'm an avid reader of Sci-Fi and Fantasy books since the first time I opened A Time for Adventure by L. Solaru and read The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis.

These days, I tend to like meaty, intrigue-laced, developed and character driven stories and I am currently reading works by Michelle West, Jacqueline Carey, Steven Erikson and Robert Jordan.

Please name some of your favourite fantasy authors!

One of my favorite science fiction novel is "time line" though i dont remember the author's name. I had to actually photocopy some of the science logics like quantum tech stuffs and theory of multiverse. I recommend it for all science fiction lovers.

Man. Too many authors I like:

Isaac Asimov (Robot series, Foundation!!! I'm nuts about Foundation)
Frank Herbert (Dune, frikkin amazing)
Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time. Not pleased with Sanderson's writing style tho)
David Eddings (Belgariad. . . the other stuff he wrote sucked tho)
George RR Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire. The books A Dying of the Light and Tuf Voyaging are also very good reads)
Robin Hobb (Farseer stuff)
Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (Dragonlance)
Raymond Feist (Riftwar Saga)
R.A. Salvatore (the Drizzt Do'Urden books)

''Timeline'' was written by Michael Crichton. I particularly love his books like , Disclosure , Congo , Eaters of the dead , Prey , Jurassic park , Airframe , Lost world and Sphere ( his best ). I also like medical thrillers by Robin Cook.
Re: Name Your Favourite Sci-fi And Fantasy Writers! by ektbear: 1:10pm On May 25, 2011
Orson Scott Card had written a ton of stuff I like.

Ender's Game series
Alvin Maker series
Homecoming series (which I'm told is basically the Book of Mormon but set in space)

I really enjoyed all of the above. Alvin Maker especially is kind of a creative, nice piece of work.

Larry Niven's Ringworld series is great. I like the Man-Kzin war series too.

Jack Vance is most famous for his Dying Earth series (which I've not read), but I really enjoyed his Lyonesse trilogy.

Phillip K D1ck is supposed to be great. . . all I've read from him is The Man in the High Castle. Didn't like it that much.

George Orwell's 1984 is a classic probably everyone has read.

Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and  A Journey to the Center of the Earth, both great classics.
Re: Name Your Favourite Sci-fi And Fantasy Writers! by ektbear: 1:25pm On May 25, 2011
Not much of a Stephen King fan in general, but I enjoyed The Eyes of the Dragon.

The Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. . . I liked the series as a kid, but having reread it as an adult, it kind of is bleh.

@ekt bear: Also try Stephen King's The Dark Tower (books I - VII). A unique blend of fantasy and science fiction. The opening lines for me are some of the most evocative words I have read: "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."

Other favorite authors include:
Terry Pratchet - Discworld novels (very humorous)
Robert Jordan's (& Brian Sanderson) - Wheel of Time (my favorite series)

Sci-Fi authors:
A.E. van Vogt - (The Weapon Shops of Isher)
Clifford D. Simak
Robert Heinlein
Isaac Asimov
Brian W. Aldiss - (The Saliva Tree & other stories)

@omoovie the only authors i recognise among those you listed are CS Lewis and Robert Jordan; RJ.s dead now and the series is being continued by Brandon Sanderson
My all time favorite author in the fantasy genre is JRR Tolkein (his LOTR Series and the Hobbit got me interested in the genre) also a fan of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson , Robin Hobbs, i also like Anne Mcaffery (especially the pern series), Weis and Hickman, Terry Brooks, George R.R. Martin (though his books seem to be taking time now; i swear if he dies the way Jordan did i will really be vexed with him) among others
on the core scifi end i like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clark, read one o two Larry Nivens,
the list can go on ,

Undoubtly Stephen King. His early books were the best but due to critics urgings to sound more realistic, he has lost it. His best are-
IT, salem's lot, firestarter, geraldine's game, the shining, the tommy bosoms.
Stephen king's ability to peer into the deepest recesses of the human mind and interpret all that goes on. He is able to peer into the darkest parts of our minds n relate it to us. Gosh! I must meet him before he dies.
Re: Name Your Favourite Sci-fi And Fantasy Writers! by KoReS292(m): 7:23pm On May 25, 2011
j.r.r tolkein , genius
anne rice , only a very disturbed mind can create the likes of queen of the damned and i luv it
Terry Goodkind (legend of the seeker) although he tends to hammer continuously on the same topic

Ah! I LOVED "Time For Adventure"!!!!! I still think about it from time to time. I wish I could get my hands on a copy.

I'm all about Robert Jordan at the moment. Currently reading book 11 of The Wheel of Time. Amazing.

I've only read two Philip K. manliness novels; "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and "Ubik". Both were amazing in my opinion. @ekt_bear I'd definitely recommend those two.

I recently read Tom Holt's "Blonde Bombshell" and absolutely loved it. It was very humourous.

Also, "Brave New World" is some trippy stuff, kinda in the same vein as "1984".

Tolkien: Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillions and all the subplots in the Middle Earth Stories
Philip Pullman- Dark Materials
David Gemmell- Lots of good books so cannot stop
The Little Kid who wrote- Eragon, brisingr and the other books
William Nicholson: The Wind is on Fire
Read all the Star Wars books by various authors
Diane Jones- The Chrestomanci
