Industrial Engineering is versatile. You can actually fit into any career. I read Industrial & Production Engineering from UI, Ibadan. I am currently working as HR professional. I have also worked as a Banker too. There are some of my course mates that are into so many other professions such as Banking, US army, Health and safety professional, Product manager, Manufacturing Engineer, Inventory manager, Ergonomics Engineer etc. The list is endless.

So i will advise you go for it of you want to. You can now specialise in automation, robotics etc. Mechanical engineering is good and not limited in any way. You can use it as a springboard into any profession such as Fluid Mechanics Specialist, aerodynamics engineer, aeronautical engineer etc.

All these depends on what you want and also good in.

Do you plan to do this masters in Nigeria?

Good day, elders.
Please I would love to ask two questions. The first question is, how good and promising is a career in Industrial Engineering?
The second question is, can someone with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering do a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering?

It's real course. University of Ibadan offers it. I want to know know more about, that's why I asked. Btw, thanks for your advice sir.

I didn't mean that literally, of corse I knew it was a real course.
What I was getting at is that it's a course that leads no where. I would advise you continue your masters in any of the branches in mechanical engineering.

All the jobs flying around are Electrical Engineering and IT. NOTE: I am at the Locatoin where Engineering trives (PortHarcourt). I also did some other certification courses to add to it under Electro-Mechanical(pumps,valves,HVAC,Actuators,P&ID). And still job hunting...I went further to add Pipe fitter certification(trade test class2). And I am still job hunting...pls if u see this and have any Vacancies available for me ,pls reach me via call/watsapp 08067880681.

Do you have handsome experience on any of the following you mentioned?

Did all the jobless graduates in Nigeria read a particular course that has made them unemployed?....Even Doctors seek for jobs in Nigeria, the few that were fortunate to get are still not well paid according to what I heard.

Once you know your way, good at what you do or lucky you can get a dream job in Nigeria irrespective of your field or whatever. That's what I believe.

And there are no industries in Nigeria? I think most of you need to exit these toxic bubble you created for yourselves here on Nairaland out of negative mindset and idleness.
It's high time you change your circle, location and the kind of books you read. Just yesterday alone, I saw 10 long trucks of a manufacturing company I used to think is a small scale business! I learnt that's not all the trucks they have and cost of each of those trucks is around N10m to N20m, yet I used to think this company is small. Leave Nairaland before they completely ruin your mind and life with negativity!

Industrial engineering is more of statistical and quality control program. Not a popular branch of engineering. At the end of the day at work engineers are cross trained

A masters in mechanical gives u a wider scope of application than industrial.

However at the end of the day it’s your application that matters

University of Ibadan offered Masters in Industrial Engineering back in the days (not sure if they still do). It's a little more focused on Production Engineering or in some other climes, Logistics. Check the school where you plan on doing the masters and find out the individual courses they make up the program to see if it suits what you are looking for.

I studied production engineering BSC in Nigeria And a masters in industrial engineering and operations management in the Uk. Currently I work as continuous improvement analyst for a big tech firm. I think the opportunities for industrial engineers are limitless as various industries requires the skills especially if you have lean six sigma green or black belt. But if you are in 9ja no job for industrial engineers o. Cos they aren’t interested in any improvements. Nigerian companies are more interested in “Na so them Dey do m. E good like that”.

Instead of wasting time on industrial engineering.

Why not go for electrical and electronics engineering?

The demand for automation experts in manufacturing industries within and outside Nigeria has skyrocketed.

While you can switch to automation after industrial engineering. An electrical and electronics degree gives you a solid foundation to branch out into any engineering subfield.

Mechanical is pretty limited. Don't go that route. Unless you're CALLED!

Do you know anything about Industrial Engineering? Is Industrial Engineering all about automation alone. Bro seek for knowledge if you don't know

Firstly you don’t state whether your options is open to both home and abroad. I’ll advise based on what I know.

I don’t know much about how Industrial Engineers currently fare in Nigeria but in countries like USA, it’s a nice course and if you can try to apply for masters in Industrial Engineering to USA, you will be very glad you did.

To start with, industrial Engineering is like the bridge between Engineering and other disciplines so whether you study Mechanical or Geology as undergrad, you will be admitted to Industrial Engineering master’s easily. (Note: I don’t know much about Naija universities master’s requirements but I might guess it’s the same).

After you graduate, you can work in virtually all sector because the philosophy is that industrial engineers are there to improve the process and make it efficient and optimal. So you get jobs well in Consulting firms, Engineering companies, IT companies, Banks, infact if you improve yourself well and learn programming skills, an Industrial Engineering Master’s with programming skills will land you lot of top tier IT jobs.

I don’t know the curriculum much in Naija, but if I am to choose between mechanical and Industrial in Nigeria, I will choose Industrial. Besides the fact that you won’t go too much into core Engineering, it will avail you with the chance to explore diverse minor like Quality Management, Supply Chain, Data Science & Analytics, Product Development, and other core IE minors. With these range, you can adapt almost anywhere and make impact. Even in Naija, building yourself well in one of this should get you a good job if merit is involved.

Lastly, it’s your life and desire. If Industrial Engineeeing is what you want please go for it because I don’t see any major life changing difference between Industrial or Mechanical. Infact in some schools they are fused into the same department like Mechanical & Industrial Engineering dept.

Help: Visit this thread on questions on USA admission and general inquiries for your MS. https://www.nairaland.com/6354180/general-usa-student-visa-enquiries-part
At the emboldened, could you please enlighten me about this?
I am interested in it, but don't know if I will easily cope since I'm not coming from an engineering background

What would you want to know? Mechanical is very related to Industrial Engineering. In fact , I took a course called Industrial Engineering. I love the fact that industrial Engineering students can specialize in Ergonomics which is something I am interested in.

You are living in total darkness. It is better to be an Industrial Engineering graduate than a mathematics solving mechanical Engineering graduate. 75% of mechanical engineering graduate are physics teachers or maintenance engineer playing the hide seek game with the uneducated but skillful technicians that are generally employed by most factories. Check it out , as an Industrial Engineering your thinking capability and the ability to resolve problems both on technical and economic ground can not be compared with any field of Engineering. All courses has its challenges in Nigeria but I tell you, I.E is a better option and this is the only reason why 55% of Mechanical Engineering graduate in Nigeria struggled to have their Masters degree in Industrial Engineering. If you want to know more read from google both from the local and international perspectives.
I did a lot of mechanical engineering courses from thermodynamics, fluid mechanics to manufacturing science . I had the highest score in Engineering designs, yet I can tell you, it is nothing but mathematics and some abstract nonsense,

In most cases, expertise in automation is not degree related, it is purely experience related and such any degree holder can be outstanding in the field through good experience and on the job training

Just like IT related field is better learned after schooling especially in Nigeria

Get a job with your first degree before embarking on msc cos you may end up getting a job where industrial engineering isn't recognized.

If you have a Geology undergrad with CGPA of at least 3.5/5 or 3.0/4.0, then you can get admitted easily. Since the course is not that core engineering kind, you can always adapt. I know a lot of guys then with even other courses like Biology that cope very very very very well.

You’ll have lot of take home assignments that contribute much than even exams to your final grade and you can always seek help from your colleague with that. Then all what you learn can just be used in the exams which will make it very easy.

How do you automate industrial systems without Mechanical Engineers?

Mechatronics is a multitasking of various industrial systems

First of all, engineering is broad and there is room for everyone. Whether you are a mechanical, electrical, civil, computer or software engineer there is always a job for you. But one thing you must understand is that engineering is the future of the world and it is a growing profession. You must update yourself to stay relevant in your field.

Myself I have worked various field of engineering here in North America. One thing I will like to mention, is for you to be good at your field. Be well granded and pursue skills related to your career. Learn to market yourself beyond the shores of Nigeria. Look abroad and look far by using Google search and links such as indeed.com for jobs and udemy.com for training and skill acquisition.

Never stop praying never stop trusting God and never stop trying. Someday you'll be glad you did.
