President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the deployment of technology to tax digital transactions carried out across the country.

Boss Mustapha, the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), said the president directed the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to ensure that digital transactions are taxed.

He spoke on Tuesday at the 17th general assembly and 10th anniversary of the West Africa Tax Administration Forum (WATAF) in Abuja.

The SGF said FIRS had been empowered to carry out the mandate by the president and the federal executive council
(FRC).

“Nigeria is putting in place measures to ensure that we keep up to date with these developments and answer the question of what to collect and how to collect it, as far as the digital economy is concerned,” he said.

“Therefore, our definition of what to collect- whether we call it income tax, Digital Service Tax or Value Added Tax, must address the issue of redefining who a taxable person or entity is, to accommodate the fact that digital transactions side- track the ordinary and traditional understanding of jurisdiction.”

Also speaking, Mohammed Nami, the FIRS chairman, said tax regulators and industry stakeholders must rise to the challenge of taxing transactions carried out digitally.

“When you speak of taxing the digital economy, you are talking about an economy without physical borders, trade and commerce that transcends our natural geographical delineations,” he said.

“In terms of tax administration, the only way that this can possibly be done with any accuracy and effectiveness is if it is done digitally, since the commercial activity itself is also done digitally.

“Tax regulators and other industry stakeholders must therefore rise up to the challenge of being in a position to tap into the stream of opportunity that advancements in science and technology afford us.”

Whenever this mannequin jets out of the country a landmark decision most times unpopular against the masses must be shunned out by his subordinates often making me think who really is d Presidency. If not that insensitivity and sheer wickedness run in d DNA of Buhari"s APC, this govt would have tarried a little for d supreme Court final adjudication on d Tax litigations esp d VAT issues from several States like Rivers, Lagos etc to avoid this rush rush that simply have d tendency for multiple taxation. Question begging for answers are what are those digital transactions that are not already being taxed. A govt against digital/electronic transmission of election results is here talking about taxation on digital transactions a development that could roll back all gains made with cashless policy and with d soon coming e-Naira wallet policy only God knows how we survive this torturous regime

Painful death awaits this man. This man has no futuristic plan for the country, no mid term and long term planning towards tech development. The soon to die geriatric is about to kill start ups that have been striving hard for far too long without government interventions.

So after taxing from basic salary if one is a government worker this clueless regime will still want to tax a non-profit making e-transaction? Is this how the financial crunch is biting this rudderless govt now?

Hmmmmmm. This is not the best time for this government to be talking about demanding more tax payments from her citizens. This is a precarious moments for most families that ordinary eating is just by the grace of God due to the high cost of normal basic things

By 2023, Bubu would remix Bella Shmurder Cash out... this I have seen

because I wonder with all the amount they've been borrowing,
we have not seen with our eyes what have been done with the Millions of Abacha loot returned. it's all being re-looted, yet they're looking for every avenue to tax more and more...

Moghalu Kingsley said our economy is a one way pony.

Nigeria is Africa's largest market yet the only thing we're selling is the rapidly declining crude.

all we do is buying.
