In commemorating the 34th Anniversary of the Akwa Ibom State, the Member representing Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan Federal Constituency, Rt Hon. Michael Enyong, has changed the fortunes of 34 indigenes for the better with the donation of one million naira cash gift to each.

The cash gifts were
presented in cheques to the beneficiaries drawn from across different local government areas on Thursday at the Federal Lawmaker's Uyo residence.


Speaking at the event, Enyong who described poverty as a killer syndrome that has eaten deep into many lives and robbed thousands of their pride and dignity, noted that the empowerment of 34 indigenes is an approach in the right direction to change the lives and fortunes of the people for the better.


Relating his life's experience with the people's, Enyong popularly known as Baba Ntan opened up that poverty had dealt badly with him in his early days and as a result of the horrendous sufferings associated with the syndrome which caught up with him, he made it clear that he grew to detest poverty with passion.

He, therefore, assured of his full commitment to stamping out poverty in his constituency and the State at large.


The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals Development maintained that the recent empowerment is a continuation of his ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ empowerment project conceived last year as panacea to poverty alleviation.

Owing to the impressive impacts of the projects in the lives of the people, the Uyo born Parliamentarian announced an added increment in the number of targeted beneficiaries of the million naira project from 300 to 500. According to him, over 200 beneficiaries have so far benefited from the project.


He urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the money received while praying for them to
succeed in whatever legitimate business they may invest the money in.

In her remark, the Wife of the Federal House Member, Mrs Mary-Grace Enyong told the people that Baba Ntan is an epitome of love. She said the lawmaker has lived almost all his life catering for the welfare of the masses.

She also charged the beneficiaries to develop indepth plans that would see to the best utilisation of the money received, adding that the money has all the capacity to change their lives for the better.

She admonished them to strive to succeed and ensure to equally uplift others when they eventually find their feet.

“You don't become poor by giving help to others, make use of this money, develop it and invest it properly, when profit comes also help others. Together we can all achieve Baba Ntan's dream of killing poverty completely," She submitted.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Sampson Okorie thanked Enyong for such show of love and pledged to make the best out of the funds.

The event featured a lecture from officials of the National Human Rights Commission on Enterprise Management.


Political stakeholders at the event included: Hon. Ita Udombon, former Transition Chairman, Ibesikpo Asutan LG; Mrs Paulina Akpan, PDP Chapter Woman Leader, Uyo LG; Hon. Monday Sampson, former Councillor, Nsit Atai LG; and Obong Okon Nsentip, former PDP Chairman, Uyo Senatorial District amongst others.
