Ichie Sir Izuchukwu Nwabueze (Ichie Chinaemeze) The Chairman of Zone 13 Chaplaincy Stakeholders Forum, the principal Secretary to His Royal Majesty, Igwe Dr Robert Eze Okofia VI and the chairman Ceremonies Committee of Ukpo Kingdom in Dunukofia Local Government of Anambra State has raise alarm over the high rate of drug intake among the youths.



Ichie Sir Izuchukwu Nwabueze raised the alarm while reacting to the news report credited to NDLEA in one of the South East State over the arrest of 165 suspects including 145 males and 20 females who deal on drugs within the age brackets of 17 and 35 and with the seizure of 959.677 kg of hard drugs such as cannabis sativa, cocaine tramadol, methamphetamine, heroin and diazepam.


He stated that it is a worrisome situation that there is an increasing abuse of methamphetamine, popularly known as mkpuru-mmiri in south east young people.


He opined that reliable medical sources has proved that the long term abuse of meth leads to permanent damage to blood vessels of heart and brain, high blood pressure leading to heart attacks, strokes and death. It can also lead to destruction of tissues in nose if sniffed, respiratory (breathing) problems if smoked, Infectious diseases and abscesses if injected, Malnutrition, weight loss, Severe tooth decay, Disorientation, apathy, confused exhaustion, Strong psychological dependence And Damage to the brain similar to Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and epilepsy.


Ichie Chinaemeze urged all hands to be on deck so as to arrest this ugly trend which has the capacity to destroy the future of the youths.



*On the possible solution, he stated that "there is nothing more important in preventing drug abuse than for parents to spend time with their children.*

*"What else can be done? Educate yourself, have enough facts to clarify your point of view, and talk to your children. Unfortunately, many parents wait until after their children are involved with drugs or alcohol to sit down with them and talk. Don't make this discussion a onetime thing; children and teenagers need to be constantly reminded of where their parents stand. They also need parents who will listen without being critical and without over reacting."*
