Why did Twitter support Nigeria’s #EndSARS and not Ghana’s #FixTheCountry?

Civil society, not governments or tech companies, should protect online free speech

Young Ghanaians tweeted at Dorsey, requesting his support for the #FixTheCountry protest as with #EndSARS, but neither Twitter nor Dorsey responded. Instead, the hashtag initiator’s Twitter account was suspended and the government-sponsored hashtag #FixYourself was trending on the platform.

Why was Twitter politically active in Nigeria’s #EndSARS and not Ghana’s #FixTheCountry

Ghana, however, does not have a spotless human rights record, so the blogpost does not fully explain why Twitter chose the country over Nigeria for its office. In Ghana, journalists and social activists have been physically abused and killed for either protesting or speaking against a government that violates their freedom of speech. Ghana’s president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the legislature have publicly refused to respect the human rights of minority groups, including protecting the rights of the LGBTQ community in Ghana. The Parliament of Ghana, led by the Speaker of Parliament, is currently working on a law to criminalise the activities of the LGBTQ community.

Nigeria’s population is over 200 million, while Ghana’s population is under 40 million. Ghana contributes a tiny number of users to Twitter’s global expansion. Nigeria, in contrast, has the largest number of Twitter users in Africa, with some three million active monthly. If Twitter is struggling to build a good relationship with the Nigerian government to get access to Africa’s largest market, the alternative is to let the citizens [users] fall in love with Twitter.

Fixthecountry they are protesting is indirectly against the government. You don't expect Twitter to dive into that issue.

What most of you don't know is that end SARS is not in anyway attack against the government but attack against police brutality. The same thing that happened in the USA.

So it's for the people and fight against police brutality which every sane human being should be involved with. Those APC miscreants thought it's an attack against their party or Buhari, no wonder till today they're still crying.

So Ghana should go and rest or better still be specific and make their demands. What do they want them to fix in particular, is it electricity, road, or their currency value?

They should use their voting power and vote a reliable person next time. Besides, Ghana is a small country with one language and majority of them are Christians, unlike Nigeria where one particular section of the country will vote a lifeless dullard just to spite on a particular region and kick someone they perceive to be their enemy out.

Nigeria politics is not about who is capable but about where you come from and your religion. This is why I keep saying this over and over again, hoping on Nigeria to get better is like waiting for dollar to drop to one Naira which is impossible.

But trust Nigerians they're so gullible, so they can believe anything.

See what you have reduced buhari to

Why did CNN not also report the Ghana protest?

The answer is you can not quantify the magnitude of endsars to fixthecountry

Fixthecountry was just an endsars wannabe and we know wannabes never get to shine as predecessor

You all write in a condescending and stereotypical way that one wonders if you just don't get it that not everyone was born yesterday.
It was after the government had acceded to the demands and scrapped the same Sars that everywhere got burnt and prisoners set free.
So who is deceiving who? Now crime has taken over the SE and even some parts of Lagos where SARS helped to rein in criminals. We all celebrated the scrapping of SARS but most folks now regret it!

But for God , Lagos would have been in ashes today and but for the armed forces that quelled the attempt to burn Ikoyi prison and set prisoners free, we would have been facing same problem currently being experienced in the SE.

It's clear that the fall out of the campaign is a lesson to Twitter after the founder got very credible intelligence reports.

It's either the initial promoters of EndSars are naive to think they don't understand victory was when the government gave in to their demands or they were actively collaborating with vicious state actors who eventually hijacked the campaign to kill innocent citizens, burn private and public infrastructures and set prisoners free.

Every nation has its own challenges and the approach to solving their own problems vary.

May God bless Nigeria.

The fact is, the rot in Ghana is worse than in Nigeria, we are just vocal regarding our own issues here in Nigeria, unlike Ghana where they love to pretend until shit hits the roof..
