SOUTHEAST UNIVERSITIES GAMES ASSOCIATION (SEUGA) APPOINTS AE-FUNAI VC GRAND PATRON
The Vice-Chancellor of Alex-Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Sunday Elom, has been appointed the Grand Patron of the Southeast Universities Games Association (SEUGA) for his unparallel support to sports and sporting activities in the Nigerian University system.

The honour was bestowed on the Vice-Chancellor, yesterday, when the executive of the association, made up of Directors of Sports of all the universities in the Southeast geopolitical zone paid him a courtesy call.

While eulogizing Prof. Elom, for his unmatched support for sports and sporting activities which has led to the hosting of the association’s sports competitions and festivities in the University, the Vice President of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), Emeka Ogbu described AE-FUNAI as the epicenter of sports development in the Southeast zone.



He noted that though the University was just 10 years old, yet it has hosted many sports competition under the aegis of Southeast Universities Games Association, ascribing it to the favourable disposition of the Vice-Chancellor to sports and sporting activities.

He maintained that as the then Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Elom also played pivotal roles in ensuring that SUEGA held some of its sports competitions in the University, adding that now he is the Vice-Chancellor, he was not in doubt that he would do more.



He therefore used the opportunity to request the approval of the Vice-Chancellor for the University to host SUEGA Female Football Competition in November, 2021 even as he also requested for the sponsorship of the University coach to the upcoming World Universities Games scheduled for China and the use of the University as the venue for the forthcoming NUGA sports qualification competitions.

Receiving the award at the Vice-Chancellor’s conference hall, Prof. Elom assured that his administration will continue to provide the necessary facilities needed to ensure that the University is taken to greater heights in all ramifications.



He noted that apart from physical fitness, sports have become sources of youth employment and means of keeping the youths positively engaged, thereby reducing crime and criminalities in the society. He therefore promised to look into the requests of the association, hinting also that the University is on the verge of building a sports complex to ensure that both staff and students have a place for physical exercise and other sporting activities.

Earlier, the University’s Head of Sports Unit, Mr. Yinka Olawoyin explained that the visit was to congratulate Prof. Elom on his emergence as the 3rd Vice-Chancellor of the University, and to show their appreciation for the support they have continued to receive from the University Management in the area of sports development.
