S’East Shippers protest suspension of Onitsha River port

•As FG orders contractors to terminate rail at ports

The South-East Shippers Association has protested the constant suspension of activities at Onitsha River Port in Anambra State.

The group said that Onitsha port is a natural deposit which Nigeria should focus on the revenue it generates rather than politics of ethnicity.

The President of Anambra State Shippers Association, Mr. Emma Akpaka, in a protest letter described the suspension of activities at the port as politically motivated against the Southeast zone.

The group lamented the dilapidated Niger road that connects the River port to the Main Market that has become a death trap for the users. “We see it as political sabotage against us. We don’t want what happened to Warri port to happen in Onitsha port. Warri Wharf was labeled a gateway for arms and ammunition. Those who should protest were silent because they did not know it was conspiracy, until those who were illegally disengaged moved to the creeks to forment trouble.

When Onitsha River port became operational in 2017, we celebrated and expected that going forward, Onitsha will be in the same page with Jakarta in Indonesia, Guangzhou in China, Bangkok in Thailand among others.

Indeed that expectation was right, but there is no enabling environment to augment the contributions of the Federal Ministry of Transport.

Niger Street, the only road that links the wharf to Onitsha main market has collapsed. Our expectation since 2017 is that this road would be rehabilitated with speed. But the road is so bad that any heavy-duty truck that tries to pass through it must fall.

“Therefore, Anambra State shipper are calling on the state government to come to our aid immediately by giving this road a facelift. this under the guise of internally generated revenue. This action has frustrated many of our customers.

“We equally advice governor Willie Obiano to facilitate the building of a jetty at the bank of the River Niger. Meanwhile as part of efforts to decongest the ports and end the intractable gridlock along Apapa- Oshodi Expressway, the Federal Government, has ordered relevant authorities to ensure that all rail lines terminate at the ports.

Nay naysayers will soon gather to tell you that this Riverport has been hindered just like the 2nd Niger bridge because of Ipob.

Why can't the FG take the whole country as one ...as in One Nigeria?

If this port was to be in Kano or Kaduna...it would have been working for ages.

I was reading one thread and a slow fellow, was asking what does IPOB want

Treat every region as part of the country and most agitations will die a natural death.

Sometime I ask myself, why most black people have problem?

...unless the central government has hidden agenda.

People will tell you that the Igbos will fare better in one Nigeria...but I have asked myself...if this port and the federal roads will be like they are if they were in their own country?

Will they be without a rail system, if they have their own country?

I doubt it...

If Nigeria want population, why can't they go for a confederacy...and still be one Nigeria, so that regions can develop at their own pace.

I keep telling them, all these agitations by sesesionist groups are because the whole regions are not treated equally. Treat everyone equally and agitations will go finally but the marginalisation keeps growing by the day. The Southwest are joggling to produce the presidency after being part of it for 16 year when a part of their region has not been there for once. Is that not greediness? Tell me why they won't be agitations

I remember when some of my naive kinsfolk were popping champagne during the test-run of operations at the Onitsha river port. Some dickheads were even going as far as saying that the test-run was proof-positive that Buhari is ‘fair, just and loves Igbos’!

Does anyone think that, in line with greedily coveting Nigerias’ resources to first develop the north-west (Daura in particular), that if this river port was in their region, that it wouldn’t have been up and running by now!?

After suspension of works on the 2nd Niger bridge on being sworn in to office in 2015, they finally recommenced works few months to the 2019 elections so they could have something to milk for PR and point to that Buhari/APC is doing in the south-east.....and boy, have they milked it! shocked

Looks like the Igbo business communities are finally speaking out. I don’t know what took them so long.

All the things Nigeria has been doing to igbos is beginning to backfire because those igbos who love Nigeria are beginning to change their minds about it.

Destiny can be delayed but can never be denied.

Are these people not witches and wizards? They want Igbos to remain in Nigeria at all cost then be embrace them fully and allow development in their region they still refuse!

Onitsha port ordinarily should have been developed and the river fully dredged so that the port can serve SE, NC, NE and Chad/ Niger effectively. With the coming of Aftcta, developing Onitsha port will go a long way in promoting trade and industrialization in SE but no, anything that will help Igboland is like poison to them.

If Onitsha port is allowed to function then the second Niger Bridge becomes useless.
Put it this way, "For Lagos to survive, Eastern ports need to be closed down"

Let me explain it better for you.
Hope you know Onitsha and Environs very well. Look at that Second Niger Bridge, where it is heading to, you'll realise that it is a Lagos project not East. It is designed to facilitate movement of human resources and containers down east from Lagos Port (it is a one way direction). Which in fact is aimed for the sole beneficiary to be Lagos and Lagos alone.

If there was need for second Niger Bridge which will benefit Ndigbo on either side of the Niger, it will be at the opposite direction (far right of the 1st bridge when looking at it from Onitsha, towards Ose).
You doubt this? Ask anyone from Onitsha, the bridge is so needed at that side that Ferries still operate there and people and essential goods are loaded together there.

Now back to the port. Once the port operates, there will be no need for any forced/conditioned movement to lagos, that particular 2nd Niger Bridge which was designed to bypasses Igbo towns in Delta, thus heavily decongesting Lagos, reshaping the dynamics of economy in Nigeria as most containers (>70%) from Apapa port ends up in the East, heavily reshaping the chart of cities of interest in Nigeria , and retaining most especially human resources in Igboland.

This will make what was happening during Michael Ọkpara's tenure in 1960s repeat itself (Read about what he was doing in PortHarcourt). If that happens, at least six economic powerhouses will spring out from either sides of the Niger, which will redefine the economic regional chart of Nigeria.

You now understand why according to Nigeria, Onitsha port must go down?

Igbo business and political elite cocooned in their mansions in Abuja and Lagos are to blame, Had the USA not insisted that the returned Abacha funds be tied to verifiable infrastructural projects in all 6 geo-political zones, the 2nd niger bridge will not have reached this stage of construction. We have heard how CBN is channeling and shuffling huge billions to Lagos state for their regional rail transit project but how much did CBN advance to Anambra for the State airport at umuleri.......where are our politicians when these monies are being shared? Support IPOB and play hardball politics! they will never do so instead they go sucking up to the fulani cabal who ultimately make a mess of them!

The very existence of Nigeria or the sole aim of creating Nigeria was to keep Ndigbo down.
To do that Igbo allies like Ibibio, Efik etc have to suffer as well as collateral damage (their ports remain shut and crossing border between their side and Cameroon extremely difficult)

Exactly they want us to shut up and be cheated in perpetuity.

This generation says enough is enough. That thing Nigeria fears the most will surely come to past. Let them continue acting film. Only themselves that they are deceiving.

But the port will, whether they like it or not. Lagos is so choked that the Yoruba are grimacing under their smiles. If the Igbo continue using the Lagos ports infrastructure will collapse one after the other in Lagos.

Restructure this country into self- governing regions or let's go our separate ways.

'One Nigeria' , as it is presently constituted, is not favoring the Igbos.

They still have this reserved scare that Ndigbo might leave and never come back like it was happening during the day's of Michael Okpara.

The difference between Lagos and Cotonou is the Igbo factor.

But whether it will happen or not, It will surely happen and the only state preparing to contain the population shock is Anambra. I think posts threads on New "ghost" markets in Anambra like the International Market in Oba, Ogidi etc.
Those are the preparation. I don't know if it is foresight or mere coincidence but Anambra and as much as I want to avoid saying it, Apga is preparing for it.

Currently Anambra have at least 10,000 ghost shops in different new International Markets across the state. Most of which are linked to the Port if allowed to function.

That Second Niger Bridge is an evil project for Igbos, not minding the bridge would be tolled that bridge is constructed way below in a way that no ship would pass. It wasn't giving the modern construct for the possibility of ship passage. At the appropriate time Igbos will do what needs to be done for future possibilities in that bridge and port

On Anambra's side it is down to foresight. They are not certain when this markets will be needed but they are setting them up nonetheless. That's commendable.
