Cotonou Car Market Vs Berger Lagos Car Market by mtamu: 11:11pm On Jun 05, 2011
I was just wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages of buying a used car at Cotonou or Berger( Lagos).
Guys and of-course ladies, please share your car buying experience at these markets.
Re: Cotonou Car Market Vs Berger Lagos Car Market by larryshow4(m): 6:15am On Jun 06, 2011
Why would I be buying some cars and land them at the same price I would find it in lagos. Say example I get a camry landed for 800k and I see the same car in beger in lagos and the dealer is selling it 800k too and his telling me its cotonou cleared. Definately there's something wrong. Am not conderning buying cars in Lagos, there are some cars I check lagos for too. But I can't be a dealer having a stand in lagos and buy a car that's 100% in shape in cotonou, I'll get something that I have to fix some few things. I'll be getting a discount off and would be saving a lot to give me gain and when it comes to the customs duty. I can't be an agent and be paying original customs duty of about 100k plus for a car. How then would I be making gain? I'll be paying a packaged customs paper that would cost me a token and increasing my gainn and still a whole lot of reasons too. You're open to option when buying in cotonou. A wild range of options to pick from, unlike beger.

Where else can you get an agglomeration of variegated buy options in a singular location?
Where else can you get to buy vehicles in their shipped state?
Where else can you buy a vehicle from and still save some funds that would have been exhausted if bought in Lagos?
Where else can you feel the great joy of shopping for your own vehicle in a most peaceful atmosphere, devoid of tout and touting?
where can you get the best car deals from?
Where do 70% of berger sellers get their stocks from?

The answer is so simple and easy.

people should stop telling lies in order to get customers/clients.It was all about about this 48 hrs(2 days) period of car delivery that made me venture into such a deal. After 1 wk and 2 days,I ve not yet got my delivery although the biz was not done with the poster but with another dealer who also promised that I will get the car under 48 hrs.My anger here is even if its going to take a month, tell your customer the truth. The most annoying part is that all the gist the guy told me about buying a car in cotonou were all false ranging from prizes to duration of delivery. When you get there,it ll be another story again. From stories to stories. You may even find out that you ve spent more what you would have bought the car in lagos although my main concern was to choose from varieties and not cost cos of my high taste(not by my making) BUT I MUST SAY THE TRUTH THAT I EVEN BOUGHT THE CAR MORE EXPENSIVE THAN I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT IN LAGOS.I ve vowed never to venture into such a deal again as next time I ve it in my to get another car,I will simply walk into car shop here in naija .Its only good for those that want to smuggle their cars to nigeria but if you want to pay full duty,my brother,my sister, buy it here in naija or even look for a reliable friend or relation that will buy it for you in U.S.
lest I forget,They told me that cotonou people don t work their cars, that they sell it as it comes but that's a clear lie which I confirmed by my self. They have workshops where they work accident cars and some of these workshops are even within the auto sales yard.I tell you,it was a bitter experience and a case of misinformation and I believe that most people must have experienced this as well.Even when I told two of my friends about this, they equally told me that they had such an ugly experience too, that if i had told them that I was going to cotonou to buy the car, that they would have discouraged me.I don t have time because of my busy schedule but I promised my self that I am going to put a write up as regards this.PLS IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAD A DECENT DEAL IN COTONOU,COME AND SHARE IT HERE BUT IF YOU THAT YOU HAD AN UGLY ONE,ALSO EDUCATE OTHERS SO THAT THEY DON T MAKE MISTAKES.

One more important advice, never change a huge sum of amount when going. You can change like 20K so that when you ve have seen by yourself and confirmed that all they told you were lies, you can kindly come back to naija and chang your money to naira and you won t loose so much money.I was cajoled into changing over a million naira and when I saw the truth,I notice that changing the money back would result to more losses and what if being robbed on the way?So that was a serious challenge to me too as I had no option than to buy there.

I am not here to ridicule any body's bussiness but just the sincere truth and experience is what am sharing with you because if you are not well informed, you will be deformed and you know what that means.ALWAYS BE TRUTHFUL!!!

That berger of a place is inundated with criminals and touts.
I was eager to own my first car and fell prey to them.
The so called car dealers gave me a moving dead body
and collected my 2.2 mil. The car was a renovated dead
body with rusted under. My seat almost pulled down while
on high speed. 6 months after buying a vokswagen passat
for 2.2 mil i sold it for 900k with abeg and got my self
a bug. angry angry angry angry run from berger.

Well from my own point of view, I bought a car from cotonou last year February and b4 then I went there to price it and got price range of cars and also went to berger but in there I found out that cars tyre are been washed with sugar and inside very nice but the engine so not it. Then put water in the rear so that when its been start u will feel like it was not used. They are all fake.
My car from cotonou I use for 1year had no issue until 14th month when I had to do something minor. Even till now I have change the plugs so I suggest that if you want a car you better go to cotonou.
And the price I got it was cheaper than berger too
Re: Cotonou Car Market Vs Berger Lagos Car Market by Nobody: 7:54pm On Jul 16, 2012
Have bought cars twice from Cotonou, I will not advise anyone to do that. It comes down to same price but with extra stress from cotonou. Either you ship it in from US or simply walk into Car dealers and buy it. Pays better.

I almost had high blood pressure buying a car from cotonuo in march this year.
Thank goodness the car arrived one month after payment plus extra charges that were never mentioned.
I swear my next car ll be a pre-oder from either Inspire or Fermy.
This cotonou thing is overrated.

My brothers and Sisters the bottomline is we must learn to support our own.By buying from your own people in your own place you stand a chance to gain more in all we do from pure water to Aircraft and all in between. When you cart away your hard earn money to trade with foreigners how will your unemployed brother, friend or sister get a job. Growing up in the U.S. I learn key fact, that the best business is local....Cotonue or even any other country will not contribute a ding directly or indirectly to your lifeblood but that business Man in berger will surely turn around N buy something too from a relative or another business like your. Case in point Sport is a Multi Billion Dollar Industry that have a great ripple effect on any local Economy but of what benefit or job creation Man U or Arsenal been to our local economy instead of us supporting N buying the likes of Eyinba or our Basketball Club Jersey that will lessen the unemployment situation...so my people lets think Globally N act Locally. Thanks

What a senseless and uncouth fellow you are. If you disagree with him why not just say so like a decent human? why ask him to "shut up" for being patriotic and putting across his view?

Re: Cotonou Car Market Vs Berger Lagos Car Market by totorimi: 10:29pm On Jul 16, 2012
The option of where to go and buy your car is neither here nor there, it is more of a case of the agent you are dealing with and your ability to discern good and bad cars. The same thing one can experience in any Naija auto car mart is the same thing you experience at Cotonou. In the first case ifyou are dealing with a trusted dealer which is rare to comeby anyway then to some extent if you go to Cotonou you may be able to get a good car. Dont forget they speak french and if you are not careful the cotonou agents there will inflate the price right in your presence but you wont know. So also your Nigerian dealer can short change you if you are not smart by inflating the price. The good side of it is that if you have good eyes to identify good cars you can deal directly with the importer and get a good deal but again bringing it into Nigeria. If your agent is dubious in a bid to cut corners may drive your car through the bush thereby damaging it expecially exhaust little wonder most Cotonou cars always have exhaust problem even from day one. If you are on lucky some vital aspects like the Ac regulators, catalyst etc may be tampered with before it finally gets to you. Worst case at times is that you may have major issues with immigration even after registering Cotonou cars in Nigeria if the papers are worked.

On the other hand the Lagos cars are direct, what you see is what you get as all the missing gadgets must have been replaced and fixed, the down side is if you are not a discernible person you may not be able to tell a car that has been worked on or not. The car documents will also be worked so you may also face the same fate with immigration infact sometimes you cannot drive outside Lagos with Cotonou imported cars else you risk having it impounded by the immigration guys at Ijebu ode, they are heartless. In some rare cases buying some of the cars in lagos, there have been cases where the same dealers will trail u to ur hpuse and steal the car from you again and go and resale.

So my candid advise, make up your mind having heard that there are issues both ways, then go for what you want. Price may not be a good barometer to guage the better option rather for your peace of mind I will suggest you get a trustworthy dealer and look for a good car in lagos that has been cleared but make sure they give you the real documents. Like someone said if u have someone in the USA u can go online find the car you need and get them to ship it down to Lagos port. You can clear it there and be 95% at peace with your car purchase.
