THE WORK OF THE CROSS. 1Pet 2:24

Christ carried our sins in his body on the cross. He did this so that we would stop living for sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you were healed. EASYREAD.

Good morning dear friends, I welcome you to another teaching this morning and I pray that the work of the cross will not be fruitless over our lives in Jesus name. our topic for discussion this morning is; “The work of the cross.” My friends, what is work? Oxford languages has it as an “activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.” For Jesus to go to the cross, he went to perform a spiritual work. Though he tasted death, he carried out his mission in the process. Jesus work on the cross is put in Col 2:14-15 “He cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.” NLT.

The truth is Jesus targeted the cross, he knew his work would be incomplete if he didn’t go to there. Luke 22:42 says; “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” NLT. Even after asking God to be spared from the cross, he knew how important it was to surrender to the will of the father. He knew that beyond signs and wonders, the work of the cross must be done. At this point, let us look at the work Jesus did on the cross for us.

1. For us to stop living for sin. 1Jn 5:18
“We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them.” NLT.

The main work Jesus did on the cross was that he saved us from sin. Jesus made sure that we die to sin and stop living for the father of sin which is the Devil who has been sinning from the beginning of time. 1Jn 3:8. The bible in Gal 5:24 says;” Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.” NLT. Jesus made sure that once we come to him, we receive the grace to nail our sinful nature to the cross because this will help us to live a life of holiness. 1Thess 4:7; “For God has not called us to impurity but to consecration [to dedicate ourselves to the most thorough purity].” AMPLIFIED. Also, living a life of holiness will enable us see him at the end. Heb 12:14; “Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.” NLT.

2. To secure our healing.
Those who are not in Christ are living in darkness. When you live in darkness, you cannot see what is around you and through that, you get hurt and you may fall into a ditch. Therefore, Jesus went to the cross to shine his light over the darkness in our lives and heal us of every injury we may have sustained while in darkness. John 1:5; “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” NLT.

Therefore, if you are reading this and you are not in the family of God or you have gone out of the family and you are ready to surrender or re-surrender to him, say this prayer after me; Lord Jesus, I confess you as my Lord and saviour today, please save me and be my lord and bring me into your fold.
