The Afenifere leader said the group shall be leading the Yoruba nation to demand substantial restructuring. before any election could be held in 2023.

By Agency Report November 12, 2021 2 min read

The Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, says it does not believe in secession and disintegration of Nigeria but demands true federalism to address the country’s challenges.

“We are not anarchists; we are not secessionists. We recognise that there is a democratically-elected government,” acting leader of the group, Ayo Adebanjo, told journalists in Lagos.

“However, it is the considered position of Afenifere that the president urgently constitutes a Government of National Unity solely to undertake the restructuring of Nigeria, in consultation with the Nigerian peoples.

“The issue of restructuring is about our freedom. We are democrats. I don’t want violence. I don’t want the country to break,’’ the 93-year-old Yoruba leader said.

Mr Adebanjo, who noted that most states of the federation were unviable entities, decried the level of insecurity across the country, which he said a restructured Nigeria would resolve.

The Yoruba leader also called for a sovereign national conference on restructuring and said that the country must be returned to the 1960 Independence Constitution before the 2023 general elections.

“The Nigeria that was agreed is one that was deliberately federal in structure. The Nigeria that was agreed was by design, based on a parliamentary system of government.

“The Nigeria that was agreed was one that recognised the rights of the federating regions to nationhood within the ambit of the federation that was birthed.

“It was the position of Afenifere and the National Democratic Coalition that there existed an urgent need for a sovereign national conference of ethnic nationalities that have become known as Nigerians.

“We remain convinced that the need for a sovereign national conference is imperative. The basis of the Nigerian state must be clearly negotiated,’’ he stressed.

Mr Adebanjo said that there could not be peace in the absence of equality, justice and truth guaranteed by substantial restructuring and true federalism.

He added that he had spent more than 70 years of his life to relentlessly struggle for a united, civilised and prosperous Nigeria.

According to him, “the Afenifere will support any person who has a clear cut understanding of a restructured Nigeria and sincerely committed to true federalism”.

He said that Afenifere will be leading the Yoruba nation to demand substantial restructuring before any election could be held in 2023.

On the on-going National Assembly’s Constitutional amendment, Mr Adebanjo said that he did not believe in any amendments to the 1999 Constitution because Nigerians were not part of its drafting. (NAN)

Igboho thrown right under the bus in the mud.

Look, in developed climes, the members of the intelligentsia drive conceptual duscussion, research and development. I mean the subject matter specialists in the universities and key professional bodies. But unfortunately here in Nigeria, everyone is focused on "what's in there for me".

Otherwise, why haven't Nigerian Economic Society and Nigerian Political Science Association collaborated to articulate restructuring proposals for Nigeria. That is, select brainy multidisciplinary experts representative of different geopolitical zones to sit down and use their backgrounds, regional interests, wide experiences to work out the BOLT and NUT of how best Nigeria can be restructured politically and economically to make each zone tap into its areas of comparative advantage to become prosperous. I have no doubt, they will easily get funding from outside the country to do this without interference from politicians.

These proposals will published as a document and presented to Nigerian public, National Assembly and state assenlies, ethnic interests organizations, etc to drive enlightenment, engender discussion and serve as a working document.

Afenifere and such concerned organization could inspire or instigate these bodies to create a working document instead of making routine noise that will achieve nothing. Waiting for politicians to do anything is waste of time because they don't know what to do apart from their selfish focus on looting public funds.

Prosperous geopolitical zones translate to prosperous Nigeria.

The same Group ipob was hoping would assist them destabilize the country is now saying it has no interest in the Mkpurumiri terrorists.

Even the Ijaws whom they once looked up to for support have been turned into their favorite punching bag, with insults flying in their direction daily. Now it appears the terrorist group is cornered and with no allies.

This is why you see them putting up threats and useless ultimatums here and there in the hope the FG would accede to their demands. Such a bad time to be Mkpurumiri IPOB.

You want restructuring ? U want north to open eye and lose their advantage in Nigeria

Let's be realistic in this country for ones

Why do you think Islamic north want to share same country with beer drinking pork eating infidels like me and you ?

Why would you north want to share same country in a restructured Nigeria

Restructuring is far more difficult to achieve that saparetion and that's a fact

Most tribes are scared of secession, because they're uncertain of their individual abilities and future....
If Nigeria breaks certain benefits some regions and individuals are enjoying thinking it's from their ability or luck will change..
Things will never be the same (could be better or far worse) yin yang

Nigeria is a Tripod or maybe quadropod , IPOB be aware it's still them against you 1967 again
So if you're not really really really really ready, end now or start preparing ...

Sorry to sound this way.. The few lines I read on that article made me lose interest in finishing it.. They sound confused.. How can you be leading a Yoruba nation for restructuring lol? OK, well we should all respect them opinion and choice but let them respect the opinion and choice of others who want out specifically my own people.. The Igbos..

If you want to remain in Nigeria no worries but do not act as a demonic entity with the FG against another freedom fighting people.

Enjoy everything in Nigeria but Y'all should let Biafra go.. IF you want to test our resolve and willingness let the Fg Conduct a referendum and put them popularity to a test.
