Osun against water satchets

Anybody caught dropping empty water sachets in public places in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, may henceforth pay N20,000 as fine, the National Environmental Standards Regulations Enforcement Agency has said.

Osun State Coordinator of NESREA Mr. Rufus Anjorin said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Osogbo, shortly after a rally to mark the World Environment Day.

Anjorin said the agency would no longer tolerate a dirty environment.

He said, “Whoever dumps any form of refuse including the so called ‘pure’ water sachets risks a fine of N20,000 if caught in the act by our men.

“Everyone has the responsibility of making the environment clean and no effort will be spared by the agency to ensure that the task is accomplished.

“If the environment is clean there will be fewer cases of diseases and remote chances of epidemics, thereby reducing expenses on drugs,”

Anjorin said the ongoing sensitisation and mobilisation of the people was necessary as a prelude to the arrest of erring persons.

Very good law. What about littering generally?.
Re: N20,000 Fine For Dropping N5 Water Sachet In Osun by Pukkah: 6:35pm On Jun 07, 2011
Although this law sounds good but the government should remember to make trash bins available at strategic points.

On another note, the fine of N20,000 seems to be on the high side for a state like Osun.

Does a national agency have the power impose such penalty or even arrest without a law?
Is this law applicable only in Osun State?

There's something missing in or wrong with the report!

The penalty is outrageous. N2,000 is more realistic and deterrent enough. Where will Iya Alaba elewa or pupil Luku get 20,000 to pay as penalty for careless disposing of water sachet? Abeg

The amount of money to be paid will surely make people to look and think twice before they litter

That Penalty charge is not feasible.
Minimum wage is just #18000 isn't it?
Other forms of deterence can be employed
Teachers can help pass this messages to their students.
Re: N20,000 Fine For Dropping N5 Water Sachet In Osun by Nobody: 7:32pm On Jun 07, 2011
A similar scheme in Lagos went off a tangent.
People descended on trash bins in the dead of the night and emptied their household wastes in them
All to avoid paying for proper refuse disposal.

I agree. I guess the aim is more of preventive than punitive. Once you know you cant afford it, you wouldn't dare do it.

Re: N20,000 Fine For Dropping N5 Water Sachet In Osun by kasiem(m): 9:33pm On Jun 07, 2011
Osun is getting ready to create free homes for people, they'll become realistic when the find out that their custody is getting filled up with offenders who cant pay the fine. A typical igboman will prefer staying in custody to paying the fine.
Re: N20,000 Fine For Dropping N5 Water Sachet In Osun by NAJALYN: 9:49pm On Jun 07, 2011
This is a nice one. Those who pee and defecate in public places should pay double the amount. Our people really need stringent measures that will compel all to keep themselves and their environment clean. All other states should take a leaf from Osun State.

LOL this is too funny. But I guess the governor needs to stamp authority against littering somehow

ACN again shocked , must they give outrageous fine? One way driving in Lagos is 250,000 naira but soldiers, police officers, senior govt officilas, politicians and Agberos chieftains are all exempted till date. Now they are they are about to teach Osun people how to take /pay bribe. I can bet the law will make corruption thrive in the agency meant to enforce it. How many person don pay 250,000.00 for One way driving in Lagos?, i rather bribe. Why cant they charge 5000.00 naira?
Re: N20,000 Fine For Dropping N5 Water Sachet In Osun by bidemi12(m): 7:58am On Jun 08, 2011
Thank God someone is thinking. The sooner we tackle enviromental wastes in nigerian the better for us in the long run. 20k may be too high and may be revised but at least it will get people talking and thinking about waste disposal. over here if there is nowhere to dispose of small trash then put it in your car or on in your pocket. if you litter the highway guess what? you pay a 1000 dollars fine.

Then they be made to work the amount.  angry angry angry. Clear drains, cut grass, direct labour road works, community service. If we know how much it costs to clean-up (One kilometer stretch of road - single lane requires at least three cleaners - work that out monthly at minimum wage and multiply by the extent of roads state wide) then add the associated health bill from filth that government will have to bear if it offers free healthcare then all hands must be on deck. Enough is enough. These monthly environmental clean-ups  are the things to stop. They are relics of the military. A strong deterrent is required. Some Nigerians are just pigs. You're driving behind some minibus taxi and a banana peel lands on your windscreen or worse a blob of   and you just feel like overtaking the bus and slapping the hell out of the chap who cannot wait to get home to dispose his trash or afford a N 50 hanky. Terrible.

Re: N20,000 Fine For Dropping N5 Water Sachet In Osun by Anvaller: 9:35am On Jun 08, 2011
Absolute Nonsense.

I have known before now that this is what the ACN will be coming up with. You will begin to fine people 20k for pure water sachet when u as a govt have not solved the main problems. Have they done a survey on what type bins would be required at strategic places, how many per area? who will be emptying the bins? the govt investment or private investment? Have they sensitised the public about the new development and how they will begin to manage their trashes and the provisions they have made before going ahead and talking about the penalties. Are those bins already in place?

This guys are just talking about he very easiest part of the whole thing. U drop a sachet and we fine you simple! Lazy people.!
