An official said it is an expansion joint and not a crack

Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL) on Sunday said the parking lot and other facilities at the Murtala Muhammed Airport terminal II (MMA2) are in good conditions.

BASL, operator of the MMA2, gave the assurance in the wake of concerns raised by Nigerians over the safety of facilities at the terminal.

Earlier, a picture of allegedly cracked pillars at the parking had surfaced on social media, raising fear among airport users and other Nigerians.

But BASL assured stakeholders of safety at the parking lot and other facilities at the terminal.

In a statement on Sunday, Mikail Mumuni, group corporate affairs manager of BASL, said there are no cracked pillars at the parking lot.

“The person who posted the picture is obviously not well informed,” the statement said.

“This is an expansion joint and not a crack.

“The expansion joint is a space provided in every substantial structure that enables the building or structure to breathe.”

The statement also claimed that similar expansion joints are found on bridges spread across the country.

“MMA2 carries out integrity test regularly on its structure,” the statement said.

“The tests have consistently shown that the structure is in good shape.”

It's going to be a huge National disaster should this car park collapse (God forbid). It accommodates hundreds of cars.

The government should look into it because the operator will definitely cover it up. Infact dem go don plaster the cracks and repaint sef.

Na to go dey Park for Old Terminal and trek to MMIA2 for now oo. May we not be unfortunate.

There are too many illustrates in Nigeria.

Expansion bolts are a necessity in large buildings. Large buildings without expansion bolts would become stresed and eventually collapse.

That is no expansion joint and I pity those who believe this fvckery.

It was designed to look like a single column. Rounded on one face and flat at the joint.

Those are two columns.

Besides, why would you think the beams and floor have expansion joints but not the column in a building? What then will be the purpose of the expansion joint?

Edit:
When maintaining buildings, please call professionals. Someone decided to make the columns look more aesthetically pleasing (in their own eyes, anyway) and proceeded to fill the joint so that they can paint it to look like one single column. See what they have caused?

If you cover an expansion with mortar/pop screed or whatever inelastic material, it will crack. It doesn’t mean the columns are distressed.

Oga its an expansion joint.
Expansion joints can be introduced anyehere it's required in a structure.
What you are looking at may not even be a single column like many think...

more
In construction there are many consideration when it comes to finishings and aesthetics; most times these finishings or aesthetic appeals is not the decision of the engineers to make.

Seeing vertical gaps or a different material in the middle of a seemingly single round columns will not appeal to majority of users of such structures with little or no knowledge why they should be there in the first place.
Probably, a decision was taken to conceal the gaps in other not to create panic in the minds of users or to create a sense of uniformity with other columns; this decision will in no way affect the structural integrity, functionality of the columns or the structure and most engineers will allo
