The Kano State Government has proposed to establish a Ministry of Mass Marriage to be in charge of sponsoring marriages for Kano indigenes of marriageable age. The proposal was approved at the State Executive Council meeting held on Thursday in Kano. According to a source at the meeting the new ministry will sponsor marriages under Islamic rights for indigenes of the state that are of marriageable. “Marriageable age is defined as sixteen for boys and thirteen for girls. But a girl is allowed to be at nine years if her parents or guardians gave their consent”, the source added.



Many of the states in the north have had to organize mass marriages for their people in recent times but Kano seems to be taking a step further to establish a ministry to specialize in organizing the ceremonies. “Indeed marriages are special ceremonies, so such state sponsored mass marriages definitely deserve a specialized state agency for their planning and execution”, an appointee of the government who don’t want his name in print told YeyeNews.com.
