South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has concluded a successful business tour of four West African economic giants - Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal.

Ramaphosa stressed his foreign policy was focused on strengthening ties with SA's "sister countries" on the African continent.

Apart from strengthening economic ties, SA's fourth democratically elected leader was also showered with multiple national honours, some of which were last conferred on a South African president during the Nelson Mandela Presidency in the mid 1990s.

The president began his tour in Nigeria on 30 November and concluded it in Senegal on Wednesday, 08 December 2021.

First leg of West Africa tour: NIGERIA (no national honours)

IVORY COAST (chieftaincy & national orders)

President Cyril Ramaphosa was honoured with the status of a traditional chief in Ivory Coast.

He was given a symbolic key to the autonomous district of Abidjan and robed in Ivorian traditional clothes by local leaders during the ceremony.

Ramaphosa has been named Chief Dwasaho, which means “The Great Warrior”.

He was also awarded with the highest national orders by Ivorian President Alassane Outtara.

SENEGAL (doctorate & national honours)

It was in 1992 that the late former president Nelson Mandela had an honorary doctorate conferred on him by the University Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar.

Almost 30 years later, President Cyril Ramaphosa received the same honour on Monday evening at the same university, something he says “is the greatest honour”.

“I have over the years in my career been handed a number of honorary doctorates and I can say with the utmost conviction, that this one from the Cheikh Anta Diop University gives me the greatest treasure of all,” said Ramaphosa.

The President also received the highest national orders from President Macky Sall.

GHANA (tree planting & state banquet)

Ramaphosa became the second SA President to plant a tree at the President Kwame Nkrumah Memorial in Accra. Nelson Mandela was the first Head of State to plant a tree at the memorial in honour of Africa’s founding fathers.

The Ghanaian president Nana Akufo-Addo also hosted a State Banquet in honour of the South African president.

I can't stop assessing the picture of the guard of honor as manned by our soldiers. Almost all those guards in the picture used their nose covers as mouth covering, having to draw down the covers from their noses with the exception of the guard at the right side. With this picture that's sure to travel all over the world being the reception given to S.A President

Pictures tell a thousand story.

Between, the S.A president being honored and awarded by those countries is good for his ego and also several years later when he looks back, it will be a reminiscence of great maiden visit to western African countries. Of course those African countries will also be proud that the awardee cherished the honor they bestowed on him..lol.

As for Nigeria, nooooo, maybe next time. For now, the unverbalized political and economic power stratification struggle between the two, silently rages on.
