Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that the Abuja-Kaduna train service generates at least N300 million for the country every month.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Hard Copy, Amaechi said the ministry is contributing to the nation’s economic growth.

He said, “We make N300 million per month from the Abuja-Kaduna train.”

He added that “currently, we are running Lagos-Ibadan from the money we are making from Abuja-Kaduna rail service, at the end of the day, we pay back over N100 million to the federal government.”

Amaechi, who was a former governor of Rivers State, further disclosed that the government is planning to put about 16 trains on the Lagos-Ibadan rail line, stressing that this will increase revenue generation from that axis.

When questioned about the cost implications for developments experienced on the rail system, the minister said the country is capable of meeting its loan requirements.

Earlier in the year, Amaechi had stated that the Federal Government had borrowed about $2.5billion for the construction of a railway linking Lagos to Ibadan.

Speaking further about the debts accrued in the course of developing the rail transport system, the minister expressed confidence that “Nigeria has the capacity to pay back” adding that the nation has commenced repayments.

He disclosed that more developments were coming to the rail sector which will further boost the revenue generated by the ministry and as such aid the government in settling its debts.

According to Amaechi, work on the Kano-Maradi line and Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rails are expected to commence by the end of January.

No successive government since the 4th republic has done what this Buhari's Govt have done in regards to infrastructure.

mrvitalis:
[s]That's roughly $600k a month , that's roughly $7.2 million dollars a year. The project cost is around $850 million

so without maintenance , without paying anyone salary it would take 118 years to break even ......if we add salary n maintenance then you are looking at 300 years plus

850 million dollars to add 7.2 million dollars to our GDP is foolishness

With $850 million [/s]

And this Janjawee economist above has already pegged the annual revenue of the rail line to be fixed as $7.2m without future projection & progression.

This is a long term investment and cannot be adjudged by it first year revenue solely.
There are investment factors to be considered aside ROI such as Job creation, assets liquidity, taxation, investment wealth creation etc.

Relying on the first year annual revenue of a long term investment is not only myopic but crash ignorance.

We can give the top 10 ceramics importers $20 million each to build plants n stop importing ceramics .....this would save us $2 billion dollars yearly , plus boast GDP with over $3bn using only $200 million

Another $200million can be used to set up 10 cassava to ethanol factory giving that as loan to the biggest cassava farming unions ....we can be the biggest ethanol producer in the world ...with a potential to export over $2 billion ethanol and produce for local use also ...plus over 20,000 jobs

Same $200 million can be used to set up 10 to 20 cassava to glucose/ethanol plants ....we taking of a $70 billion dollars market we have absolutely great comparative advantage ...capture 15% of that that's over $10 billion a year industry

Rail lines are expensive luxury that never make profit we can't afford now

I read the analysis of someone about how it will take 115 years to complete the payment of the loan borrowed by Rt. Hon Ameachi, although the analysis is very sound and right, but there's an assumption that's missing.
The minister said there are plans to add 16 more trains,if and when that eventually happens,it will increase the income on the train.
Also with the removal of fuel subsidy almost certain to happen next year, there's a huge possibility the trains may just be cheaper than going on road.
God bless Nigeria

That one is even worse ...the economics is baseless ...Nigeria don't need rail lines now

We need to rejuvenate our productiveness first , increase revenue and GDP then build rail

Is like borrowing money to buy car then starts looking for a job and house

I have always wanted to make a suggestion to the Nigerian govt,I think there are some govt officials who visit Nairaland to read the opinions of Nigerians.
Please whoever has access to Gen Buhari should tell him it's time to permanently fix the issue of darkness in Nigeria.
My suggestion is very simple, Nigerians should be allowed to vote Yes or No for government to access 3 Billion Dollars from the foreign reserve to fix this issue of inadequate power supply.
If the citizens agree to allow govt access the money, Government should form a company that allows all Nigerian to have a share in the company.
The 3 Billion Dollars should be deployed to fixing the entire power chain, especially production.
If we can employ more than 100000 people to fabricate the iron pipes we need to move move the gas to all the moribund power plants, secure the pipeline right of way, build new transmission lines, send some some yoiths to mambilla to work there, and even start companies to mass produce prepaid meters,I'm sure Nigeria will be out of this mess called power shortage in a short while.
Part of the condition of removing the money is that Nigerians must have an open agreement on the pricing of the electricity.
Finally laws will be made to imprison anyone who makes any attempt to steal the money, and also another law to put a date on the ban of the importation of generators.
If Government can borrow 2.5 billion to build rails,I'm sure accesssing 3 Billion to repair the entire power sector isn't too much.
God bless Nigeria
