What’s going on?

For a while now, the federal government has been pushing for every citizen to register in the national database and get a NIN number, but that is about to change. Instead of NIN, the Federal Government is taking things further by introducing digital tokens.

What does this mean for the average Jack on the street?

The digital token will now replace NIN completely. The implementation of the digital token has been scheduled for January 2022.

So what happens to our NIN now?

A National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) handbook chronicling the details of the digital token says that it will completely replace NIN. It went further to say that once that is done, it will become a criminal offence for anyone, irrespective of whether it’s an individual or an organisation to verify NIN once the digital tokens go live.

Do we need to apply for the digital token just like we did for NIN?

It remains to be seen. The Federal Government in a workshop held yesterday and chaired by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami said that they’re looking to begin clamping down on NIN verification requests from unknown sources, hence the need for virtual tokens.

Nigeria has been bedevilled by a myriad of security issues and the absence of a single national database from which an individual can be traced to their mobile number and bank account hasn’t particularly helped.

A dwindling government revenue has now awakened calls for initiatives such as NIN so that things like personal tax deductions can now be seamlessly implemented; bypassing the unwarranted bottlenecks that have stood in the way for decades.
