Good evening everyone.

This evening we're going to look at Xiaomi's flagship. The Xiaomi 12 Pro.

Everywhere you go now, this is the news that is dominating the airwaves.

It's shown how big Xiaomi have grown. Two to three years ago, a Xiaomi flagship would not have generated this dust.

The first Xiaomi flagship that came to my notice was the Mi 9.

I can barely remember hearing about any Xiaomi flagship before that. I know that my Ogas dey follow Xiaomi up right from time

But for the average regular smartphone user, a Xiaomi flagship two to three years ago and beyond was one of those phones.

But things have changed.

The fall of Huawei have given Xiaomi a chance to thrive and by Jove they've taken the chance with open arms.

Xiaomi is firmly a part of the world's big three with Apple and Samsung. So yes, now a Xiaomi phone is a big deal.

And Xiaomi are no longer being modest about it again.

In the launch of the Xiaomi 12 Pro, they have boldly named it as an Apple competitor. In fact they are suggesting that it is even better than iPhone 13 series in some aspects.

So let's look at the phones in the Xiaomi 12 series and what they bring.

There are three phones in this line up:
1. Xiaomi 12x
2. Xiaomi 12
3. Xiaomi 12 Pro

There could be a Xiaomi 12 Ultra in March/April or so of next year 2022.

So let's start with the 12x

I'm only going to list the key points for all three and then summarize at the end. I have made a post listing out all the specs.

So the 12x

SoC: SD870 + Adreno 650
Display: 6.28" AMOLED (Huaxing)
Camera: Triple set up 50MP Sony IMX 766 + 13MP (UW) + 5MP Macro
Battery: 4500mAh

The 12x is essentially a lower end flagship. You may or may not call it a flagship killer but it's designed to be a cheaper option to the other two.

The SD870 is flagship quality but it's not exactly up there with the big boys like SD888, Exynos 2100, Bionic 14 and 15 etc.

So it's going to be a step below the other two.

The main camera is very good. As good as any you'll find on any flagship but the other two supporting cameras are rather mediocre. Especially the 5mp macro.

But then again, that is what most companies do. They make an excellent main camera and support it with mediocre secondary cameras. Samsung are usually very guilty of this.

The battery is of 4500mAh capacity and supports 67W charging but I am not sure if it has wireless charging or not.

It also has a cooling system and supports BT, Wi-fi, Infrared, NFC and all the other kini kan kini kan.

The prices starts at ¥3199 for the 12/128GB model. It converts to $502 or 207k Naira. Converted via Google.

If this price is correct, then the phone more than worth the money. I swear down!

The Xiaomi 12

This is the middle or vanilla phone in the line up. Think of it as the middle child.

The vanilla device usually ends up being forgotten as most people may end up settling for the 12x since it's cheaper or going for the 12 Pro since it's the best.

But I digress.

Unlike the 12x, the 12 is a true flagship and it's comes with the all new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Display: 6.28" AMOLED (Samsung)
Camera: Triple set up 50MP Sony IMX 766 + 13MP (UW) + 5MP Macro
Battery: 4500mAh

Unlike the 12x that uses a cheaper AMOLED from Chinese makers Hauxing, the 12 uses a Samsung display that is absolutely superior.

The 12 uses the same cameras as the 12x but with a much superior ISP, you can be sure that the 12 will beat out the 12x in a photo shoot out.

It also uses the same 4500mAh battery with the same 67W charge but the 12 has 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse charging confirmed.

For the uninitiated...

Wireless charging refers to charging without a wired cable

Reverse charging refers to the speed that a phone can use to charge other devices.

The 12 has a starting price of ¥3699 or $580 or 240k Naira.

These prices dey burst my head. I am starting to doubt if Google is converting well for me.

A flagship SD8G1 phone with Samsung Amoled, Sony IMX766, 8k video, 5G all for 240k.

When some people are selling Helio G95 inside one X phone like that for 229k.

Lemme not too talk fess.

The last phone in the series and the oga kpatakpata na the Xiaomi 12 Pro.

So the 12 Pro

SoC: SD8 Gen 1 + Adreno 730

Camera: Triple set up 50MP Sony IMX 707 + 50MP Samsung JN1 (UW) + 50MP Samsung JN1 Telephoto
Battery: 4600mAh

The 12 Pro is currently the best in the line up. At least until the 12 Ultra shows up next year.

I like how Xiaomi lies in wait for whatever Samsung has to offer in Q1 and then destroys it by Q2.

Smart.

So in all fairness to the 12, the 12 Pro and 12 are actually the same device but the Xiaomi 12 Pro has been upgraded in 3 areas.

Camera
Battery (more like charging speed)

The 12 Pro uses a Sony IMX 707. When I first saw it. I thought why would Xiaomi use 707 for the 12 Pro, when the 12 and 12x both use a 766?

Then I cautioned myself. Jeffrey you're a tech person. Behave.

So I went and looked at the two sensors independently and realized that the 707 was actually the better sensor.

So unlike what you see with most flagships having a good main sensor and wack supporting cameras.

The Xiaomi 12 Pro has a 50MP sensor for all three cameras.

They use a Samsung JN1 for the two supporting cameras sha and the JN1 is actually a midrange sensor...

But the JN1 is better than those 12MP or 5MP supporting cameras.

So any camera when you pick, it'll deliver.

The display is also a Samsung Amoled and is much bigger at 6.73". It has a WQHD+ resolution so it's really sharp (521ppi).

Finally the battery is a slightly bigger 4600mAh.

The charging is what matters here as it charges at 120W as opposed to the 67W from the 12 and 12x.

It's starting price is ¥4699 (499k NGN).

My oga don tell me Google dey do wayo. So I'm going to ignore them for this one.

But ¥4699 is really cheap for a flagship.

These prices to be clear are for the Chinese market and would probably cost more if the phone goes global.

So that is my take on the Xiaomi 12 series

I think Xiaomi have done very well with this one.

Earlier today, I was comparing the iPhone 13 Pro Max to the Xiaomi 12 Pro and there barely any difference.

Barely any difference to justify Apple's pricing scheme.

The 12 Pro has a better display, better cameras (easy to compare as they're all made by Sony), bigger battery etc.

Where the 13 Pro Max holds the edge is in the SoC department and that will come down to Apple's streamlined optimization

Even phones launched in Nigeria still end up getting sold at prices significantly higher than the launch price.

Useless company launching phones everyday but try to buy it now you won't see it. Even xiaomi mi 11 is still no where to be found

They are the goto for new smartphones paired with latest SoCs from Qualcom or MediaTek.
