Ethiopia's foreign ministry has called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to investigate its leader for supporting rebellious forces fighting the Ethiopian government.

WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who previously served as the Ethiopian health minister and foreign minister, said earlier this week that aid was being blocked from getting through to his home region of Tigray, where rebellious forces are fighting the central government.

"Tedros Adhanom's moral, legal and professional standing that threatened WHO's organisational standing," Ethiopia said in a statement late on Thursday. "He has spread harmful misinformation and compromised WHO's reputation, independence, credibility which is evident from his social media postings."

The WHO said in an emailed response to Reuters request for comment that it was aware that Ethiopia's foreign affairs ministry had sent a diplomatic communication, called a note verbale.

It said the WHO "will continue to ask the Ethiopian government to allow access to deliver humanitarian supplies and services to the 7 million people in Tigray, Ethiopia..."

The "WHO and partners have been repeatedly calling for urgent and unimpeded access to deliver humanitarian heath supplies and services to the people in Tigray."

The government has denied blocking aid and has accused the rebellious forces of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) of requisitioning trucks sent in previously.

Ethiopia's army chief has previously accused Tedros of trying to procure arms and diplomatic backing for the TPLF. He denied that.

Thousands have been killed in the conflict in Tigray, which spread to two neighbouring regions in northern Ethiopia before Tigrayan forces were forced to withdraw back to Tigray in December.

The United Nations says the government is operating a de facto blockade of humanitarian aid to Tigray; no trucks have entered the region since Dec. 15.

More than 90% of the population needs food aid and doctors told Reuters last week that many people - including malnourished children - are dying because no medicine has been permitted to enter Tigray.

On Thursday, Tedros tweeted "People in #Tigray #Ethiopia, living under de facto blockade for over a year, are dying from lack of medicine & food, & repeated drone attacks. @WHO & partners call for safe, unimpeded access to deliver humanitarian aid to the millions of people in great need."

The WHO said that its main call and that of the international community was to get access to those affected and for all parties to use political action to achieve peace and security.

"This is true for Tigray and elsewhere in northern Ethiopia," it said.

Ethiopia's foreign ministry said Tedros failed to show integrity and professionalism and was a member of the TPLF, which dominated Ethiopian politics for nearly 30 years before Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's appointment in 2018.

"Tedros encourages the TPLF in his media engagements and celebrates what is presumed to be a military success of the group, besides engaging in selective outrage where he discriminately addresses the humanitarian concerns in Ethiopia," the ministry said.

The government designated TPLF a terrorist group after the war erupted in November 2020. Tedros, a Tigrayan, was a member of the TPLF. Abiy also served as an intelligence chief under the previous TPLF-led government.

Tedros was elected the WHO's first African director general in May 2017 with strong Ethiopian and African support. He ran again as the sole nominee in October. Ethiopia withheld its support and 28 other countries appointed Tedros for a second five-year term.

I think it is wrong for the Ethiopian government to say that the WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus should not assist his homeland

What do you expect him to do?

Watch his people and see them dying just because he is world health director general?

Even if it is a European that happens to be in the position that is held by the WHO director general Mr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus that European man or woman will still help his people.

It is just natural for the WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to respond not minding the fact that the Director General is from Tigray,

So the Ethiopian government should stop being naughty.

What is stopping President Abiy of Ethiopia from even organizing a referendum for Tigray?

The Nigeria government also have problems managing it's diversity. The federal government of Nigeria is suppressing ethnic nationilities from not seeking for autonomy or outright independence.

The African union headquarters should be shifted to Ghana or south Africa until peace is restored in Ethiopia.

That will create the opportunity for international mediators to discuss thoroughly the solutions to the Ethiopian - Tigrayan crisis.

Ethiopia is a country that has people with different tribes and culture just like Nigeria.

It is one of the Ancient country that was mentioned in the bible.

Great rulers have rule Ethiopia in the past notably the late Emperor Halle Sellassie.

Emperor Halle Sellassie was the brain behind the setting up of the organization of Africa unity that is headquartered in Adisa Ababa, Ethiopia.

Which is now replaced by the African union that is still in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia is reputed to be one of the African countries that was never colonized by European forces while so many African countries was been colonized by British, french, Portuguese, Spanish, colonial government.

The second country that was never colonized is Liberia.

Ethiopia has one of the most successful airline in Africa.

But one of the greatest problems the Ethiopia government had been facing for several years is managing it's diversity.

The government of Ethiopia had not done much better in running and all inclusive government and addressing the diverse interest in Ethiopia in terms of political power sharing, resources control, political autonomy for region etc

Eritrean break out of Ethiopia some years back because they were maginalised and lack of inclusiveness by the government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Ethiopia war with Tigray has created humanitarian crises and rendered many people homeless and at the verge of starvation with killings and rape of women by both Ethiopia and Tigrayan forces.

Ethiopia government has every right to feel bad that it's components part is breaking away.

The break up of Eritrean some years back badly affected Ethiopia and shattered it's economic leverage to tap freely from the natural maritime sector as it's denied Ethiopian access to the sea making Ethiopia completely landlocked.

Ethiopia now rely on the seaport of neighbouring smaller Djibouti for it's export and international shipping.

There is a railway line from Ethiopia straight down to the Djibouti seaport.

Ethiopia being rendered landlocked by Eritrean independence does not make right the position of the Ethiopian government.

The United Nations that gave independence to Ethiopia looked at historical facts. They studied the historical document to get information on which regions territorial boundaries start and end.

I won't be surprised if this allegation is confirmed.

This Ghebreyesus guy is so power drunk and more of a politician to head the WHO.

The way he handled the covid-19 outbreak and its spread made me loose faith in the once reputable organization.

By December 2019, this guy made a publication that covid-19 is not human to human (h2h) transferable (without and is yet to send WHO scientists to the Wuhan lab). He relied on report given to him by China's political leaders as against safeguarding the world via the once reputable organization he represents.

A scientific based World health organization has no business with a deeply rooted political fellow to serve as her head.

We all know the impact of covid-19 on human lives and world economies, yet the guy is still in office as if nothing happened.

The guy is an error in the history of WHO and the world.

I don't see the war ending any time soon. The Tigrayan forces are armed to the teeth. President Abiye goofed when he tried to disarm them. You don't disarm a group that has been in power for more than 30 years.

The war is going to be a long drawn out war. It will surely outlive the current Ethiopian government. When you start a war, you can't predict when or how it would end. Jealousy and hatred got the better of prime minister Abiye and he wanted to use force to disarm his ancient rivals, who had ruled Ethiopia in the past.

There are foreign actors to the conflict who wouldn't want an end to the conflict. The Tigrayan rebels are being armed dangerously and they have the resources to procure high calibre munitions. They have thousands of Tigrayans living abroad, funding their operations, including tacit support from Egypt and Sudan. These two countries would ensure that Ethiopia is distracted from continuing the vexatious millennium dam they are constructing along the Nile River.

US and EU do not like Abiye because of his pro Russian stand. Foreign and international organizations, including UN are not supporting Abiye. The Tigrayan are using their international connections to the maximum. Their kinsman at the WHO is pulling all the plugs. It is a difficult war for Ethiopia without any visible foreign support. As usually the case with this kind of war, it is the masses that suffers. Hunger, diseases and death have become normal in Tigray.

Mark it down... Ethiopia is the only Africa country not successfully colonized. The Tigrayeans played a huge role in that as their specific region is very defensible and was impenetrable by the Italians and Greeks back then... They're also very knowledgeable, and they will never agree to leave under a corrupt and rotten government.
