many say d skul luks like a glorified secondary skul, although i haven't been to d skul b4, nor ever visited gwags. But luking at the maingate of d skul 4rm their official website, it luks presentable. But then, i checked out 4 d skul interior on youtube. I wasn't impressed wit wat i saw, the buildings n faculties are full of simple bungalows, hardly saw a storey building there. The skul environment is really wide and quite ok. The convocation ground isn't bad, its quite ok as well. But d students in skul seemed very happy and satisfied wit the skul and the style of live in gwags. Adebowale Adelabu is the
Vice Chancellor of the
University of Abuja. In this
interview, he explains what he is
doing to raise the standard of the
university, his relationship with his
predecessor, Professor Nuhu
Yaqoub, his alleged attempt to
grant amnesty to expelled cultists,
reversal of the decision of
relocating to the institution’s
permanent site, among sundry
issues. Excerpts:
How would you describe your
experiences in the last one year as
the Vice Chancellor of the
university in the Federal Capital
Territory, Abuja?
As the vice chancellor of the
university in the federal capital,
my aspiration for the university is
to really make a world standard in
both quality and structures. In
terms of funding, it is a fact that
government can’t do it alone. There
is also this saying that God helps
those who help themselves. We in
the university, that is my humble
self at the helm of affairs and my
able lieutenants have to put our
own efforts in the first place. Also,
as a federal government’s
university, we have to do our best
by contacting the private sector
and individuals to see how best to
retain our internally-generated
revenue. But these won’t come up if
we don’t have standard programmes
that can attract the public to us. In
line with that, we are trying to
establish some centres for
legislative studies and a centre for
corruption studies. I was recently
with the Director, Centre for
Corruption Studies and we were
mapping out those seminars we are
going to organise for them.
Another avenue is that the
University of Abuja is the only dual
mode university in the country. We
are to run degree programmes by
distance learning and conventional
mode. The conventional mode has
been going on but the distance
learning arm has started but
somewhere along the line, it became
paralysed and instead of having
our tentacles in all parts of the
country, we only remained in
Abuja. My administration is
currently working to resuscitate all
these study centres across the
country. University of Abuja study
centres are not like those of other
universities, because we are
empowered by law to do it. With my
team, we have already gone to
Jigawa State and the study centre
there will soon commence. We have
gone to Okeogun in Oyo, which is
an area that lacks any tertiary
institution. Niger state is equally
there in Minna and the fourth is in
Osun state.
It seems that the university is
operating from two locations: the
permanent site and the temporary
site. Do you have infrastructure
challenges?
The idea of maintaining the old site
is far gone. You can see that we
are now in the central
administrative block. About two
weeks ago, we commissioned the
Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies.
Also just last week, COREN was here
and they are building an auditorium
here. And in the coming one month,
they will move to site. The
development is a gradual process.
We have only the Faculty of Arts at
the permanent site now, but we are
hoping that by the end of the year
and early next year, more faculties
will move here. The challenges are
there but with the help of all of us,
everything will be alright.
Nigerian universities are facing
the challenge of producing half-
baked graduates. In the University
of Abuja, for instance, you had
this problem of cult activities by
some students. What is the situation
now and do you still produce sub-
standard graduates for the labour
markets?
It depends on your perception of
looking at these things. I can assure
that for some times, we have the
records that our students are doing
well. For instance, in this Zain
competition, University of Abuja
beat University of Nigeria, Nsukka,
Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria;
among others to go and represent
the country. Our students brought
the trophy just some weeks back.
There is no need of blowing ones
trumpet, but when you come into
interaction with our products, only
then you will know that the issue
ofstandard is not anything to come
by here.
To the best of my knowledge, I took
over in July 1, 2009 and there was
no incidence of cultism. In fact,
these students involved in this thing
are our children. And it said that an
idle mind is a devil’s workshop.
When you leave these children
unengaged and there is a distance
between you and them, anything
can happen. But as a father, I listen
to them. The Dean of Students
Affairs, who is here, is always
around to attend to their needs. If
these children take you as a father,
they won’t think of doing other
things of that nature. By the time
they get proper counselling, all this
things won’t be there.
Some of your remedial students
staged a demonstration to the
Office of the Minister of Education
some few days ago saying that
you refused to place them after
completing their remedial courses.
What is really happening?
In the first instance, admission into
any institution is never automatic. I
inherited these students. I was
summoned to the ministry
yesterday. But most of these
students are not saying the truth.
The issue of a remedial student to
take and pass the Joint Admissions
and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
exams is a national policy not the
University of Abuja’s. I was happy
yesterday when I went to the
ministry to see the minister when I
found out that the JAMB registrar
was also there. The JAMB registrar
had to inform the minister that the
policy had been there since 2006.
By the time he came in 2007, he
decided to implement the policy. And
the University of Abuja was caught.
He said that the university pleaded
and it was given a year of break-
2007/2008 session. The Senate also
set up a committee to look into it.
But this particular set who are now
complaining, we had 2007 students
who took the programme. We have
the issue of our carrying capacity
but that notwithstanding. The
regulation is that whoever passes
the JAMB as well as the remedial
should be placed. The 1043 students
who passed the JAMB and remedial
had been placed. However, we had
this group who deliberately refused
to take JAMB and some of them took
JAMB and failed. Still, they want to
be placed. And in their admissions
letter it was stated that you are
advised to sit for JAMB. But out of
mischief, these students said that
they were not properly informed. I
have already given directives to the
Director of Remedial Studies that he
shouldn’t collect the money of
whoever doesn’t sit and pass JAMB.
Another issue is even that are we
sure that all those protesting were
our former students? Some of them
were there simply to portray the
university administration in bad
light. But I look at some of these
things as the normal challenges of
leadership and a sort of distraction.
There are media reports that
appointments of some staff of this
university were arbitrarily
terminated. A case in mind is that
of the former Chief Security
Officer (CSO) of the university who
accused you of terminating his
appointment without any recourse
to the rule of law. What informed
such decisions?
The former chief security officer
(CSO) was on contract. He was
therefore a contract officer, whose
contract has a tenure. I took over in
July. And I saw a renewal of his
contract on December 2 for a
contract that terminated on August
27. I didn’t hear anything. There
was no letter for me for any
renewal. I took over in July, about
five months later; precisely on
December 2, I was presented with a
letter that the vice chancellor has
approved the renewal of the CSO’s
contract. Which vice chancellor? I
told them that I was never aware of
this. Please withdraw the letter and
terminate the contract. It was when
that thing happened that I learnt
that the former vice chancellor had
renewed the contract on May 12,
whereas his tenure ended on May
31. He renewed the contract on May
12, left on May 31 and there was an
acting vice chancellor between
June and July before I finally took
over on July 31. And the CSO is the
officer for the chief executive. And
if his loyalty is not there, what
happens?
The former Vice Chancellor,
Professor Nuhu Yaqoub, was in the
media recently saying that there
was a deliberate effort on your
part to reverse his achievements.
He specifically mentioned your
granting of amnesty to some
cultists expelled from the
university as well as your refusal
to relocate to the permanent site of
the university. You were a deputy
vice chancellor during his
administration, what is really
happening between you and your
predecessor?
The answer to that question is that
people were misinterpreting the
situation. First of all, let me start by
what he is saying in the newspapers
that I was playing with fire by
bringing back cultists. I didn’t bring
any cultist back. Igwe and Titi
were former students’ leaders:
President and vice President of the
students union of this university
respectively. They staged a
peaceful demonstration. The charge
against Igwe was that he
proclaimed that he was the vice
chancellor of the university. But
was he the vice chancellor of the
university? Frankly, these sorts of
things never interest me. As I said
earlier, I see them as distractive.
It was these students’ union
leaders; they were not expelled
because of cultism. When I took
over they wrote to me an appeal
seeking their re-instatement. They
have been writing and they have
gone to courts several times but all
their efforts to come back met brick
walls. It was when they wrote to
me, I am happy that I have evidence
to testify to that that I took the
matter to the Council on- notice.
Surprisingly, I read in the
newspapers the next day that I was
bringing back cultists. Igwe, Titi
and co were never expelled because
of cultism. It was unionism. As you
rightly said that I was the Deputy
Vice Chancellor (Academics) but they
were not expelled during my time.
And on the issue of my relationship
with the former VC, I don’t think
there is anything like sour
relationship, honestly speaking. The
Council granted him some things
which are with him. The university
driver is with him and he gets his
fuel impress like I get the same
amount; which since I took over I
never denied him. So, where is the
sour relationship? All I know is that
he came for a national assignment,
he completed it and the Council has
granted him a one year sabbatical
of which all entitlements were paid.
Was there any time that the former
VC forwarded any advice to you
which was not used? And when did
you meet each other last?
The only time we met was when our
students held their alumni meeting.
We sat on the same table and we all
left after that. Professor Isa
Muhammed and Professor A.T.
Suleiman were there. I was there
and he were there.
But they said you refused to move
to the permanent site?
That is a matter of policy. Where did
you meet me now? I am in the
permanent site. I have already
conducted congregation this
morning at the old site. Senate holds
over there. I am here. The registrar
is the secretary of the congregation
and he is here. The bursar is here
and the librarian is over there. And
I have to attend the congregational
meeting and all the people are
there. Should I have to move them
all here to conduct the meeting? I
took that decision that the meeting
should hold where the people are in
the majority. I can’t expect people
to be running here to meet me,
whereas we have only one faculty
here out of the 10. That is why I
retained my office at the old site.
