As at today 8th of February 2022, It has been about 6years that I was diagnosed with stage 3 Acute kidney disease.

I begin to feel sick in January 2016 with symptoms of malaria and begin treating my malaria via self medication and later having fever with a very high body temperature.

I couldn't eat, i was very weak and I can't do anything but only to lay on the bed. I couldn't sleep during the day and at night and still doing self medication because of lack of money.

My sickness continues for some days and was still taking over the counter drugs until a bad day when I fainted and later get up and asked my neighbor to take me to a pharmacy to buy drug again but I was rejected and was advised to go to the hospital.

I was admitted at private hospital where a blood transfusion and some other treatment was given to me and I was discharged from the hospital 4days. I was at home taking the drugs given to me at the hospital and seems to be getting better but after some days, my health begins getting worse.

At this time i couldn't eat and I will throw up if I try putting anything in my mouth and drinking water was the only thing. Lost of appetite, fatigue and heartburn was on the high side and I have to go back to the hospital to put up my complains which I did and I was given some drugs (for heartburn and sleeping pills) to treat my illness.

Haven taken the drugs for few days and I begin going to the toilet several times a day but having difficulty to defecate and urinate. My stool was dark and my urine was little and very dark too.

This continues for some days until I begin to observe that I'm swelling. My stomach was protruding, my face and legs were swollen, i couldn't sleep at night and always having difficulty in breathing and was more severe at night.

I went to another private hospital and i was referred to Luth (Lagos State University Teaching Hospital) immediately after a test result shows that my PCV was at 10%. I was admitted in LUTH and several test were done and at that time my PCV had increased to 12% after taking malt and milk to replenish and gain some strength.

Sadly on the next day, I was diagnosed with kidney failure (Acute Kidney Disease) with stage 3 GFR and Chronic anaemia.

Glory be to GOD Almighty! I received intensive care and treatment at LUTH and I was placed on hemodialysis and given several blood transfusion and later was placed on blood boosting medication. Last time I had dialysis was in March 2016 and I have been freed from dialysis and I am now able to do things that I love doing and also resumed back to work before the end of that same year. Initially i lost hopes and I thought that I was going to die simply because my case was very severe and my blood pressure was very high, blood sugar levels was low, creatinine level was very high, BUN (blood urea Nitrogen) level was very high, PCV ( Percentage of Cell Volume) was extremely low, but Thank GOD for my life today. I didn't do a transplant but I took caution, i listened to the health workers, i avoid some certain foods, i adopted a new lifestyle, i do adequate medical check-up, takes my medication accordingly and completely avoid self medication.

Many things can cause Kidney Failure and not only alcohol. Some persons are habitual drunker and yet might not be a victim of kidney failure or renal disease but everyone needs to avoid intake of alcohol completely if possible as this will put ones life at a very risk of having kidney disease especially if you are a kidney or renal disease patient already.

You are absolutely correct. Many people died because of lack of fund, good care and good information. Some persons handle it with ignorance believing that it's spiritual attack. The best advice for any sick person is to go to the hospital and get proper treatment and never leave GOD out of it because only GOD can heal but most mistakes that people do is self medicating and taking herbs first without any prior medical treatment by the specialist. Self medication was the greatest thing that I ever regretted. I don't take alcohol and I don't smoke but;
1. Drug overdose will kill ones kidneys faster than alcohol.
2. Uncontrolled blood pressure,
3. Blood sugar and
4. Anaemia etc
I thank God for my life. I never believed that I can still be alive till this moment 6years ago when I was in LUTH where I saw lots of persons died of varieties of sickness and many patients with CKD, AKD or renal disease who are on hemodialysis and even on intensive care still kick the bucket.
I will advise everyone to strictly take health issue seriously especially the old ones. Thanks �

Most energy drink contains high caffeine and potassium and must be avoided at all cost. I don't take it anymore and all kidney disease patient must run away from it as this will kill ones kidneys within few days and take you to end stage of your sickness. I'm talking from experience. I'm not an health worker but a lay man just like you.

The ways young people are coming down with end stage renal failure is rather too alarmingly, no thanks to their unhealthy lifestyle. When you tell them you don't drink alcohol, they see you as weird. At the end na their liver and kidneys go still feel am.

Fact and young people of nowadays needs to think about it. Most people who suffers kidney disease are not even drunker and I have seen lots of people who have never tasted alcohol in their entire life and still die of kidney disease. It can be hereditary, it can be as a result of kidney stones, hypertension or high blood pressure, Diabetes, Anaemia, malnutrition, drug abuse, untreated infection etc infact many patients who dies of kidney disease are mostly patient with high blood pressure, diabetes and anaemia.

Stop encouraging people to become drunkards.

What is causing the prevalent kidney failure could be more than alcohol. They should scrutinize those northern chemical laden foods people are eating. Nigeria is a country in the dark and very much on the verge of extinction. The system lacks basic knowledge and intelligence that people need to thrive and survive.

What you had 6 years ago was acute kidney injury which may be caused by many conditions such as indiscriminately used of medications/herbs, profuse vomiting or diarrhea, acute infection, toxins, sudden rise in blood pressure, etc.

Unlike chronic kidney disease that is not reversible, acute kidney injury is reversible but could be a risk factor for developing chronic kidney disease like in life.

How can you prevent this?

Stay hydrated with clean water all the time, avoid taking unprescribed medications, avoid herbal remedies, exercise regularly, treat hypertension /diabetes / chronic infections (Hepatitis B/C/HIV) if you have any, stop or cut down alcohol, avoid cigarettes, see a good doctor when you are sick, stay hydrated if you are losing body fluid(vomiting, diarrhea, unusual passage of large volume of urine, bleeding), good antenatal care etc..
