I go with No Country

This is Brolin's year. . .i just loved his work this year. . .Even in American Gangster, he was the one who stole the show for me.

Spikyn cheesy cheesy Missed ya!
Hope you get to stay in 'civilization' for a while, so we can enjoy your company wink
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by spikyn: 9:22am On Nov 29, 2007
Hey iice! Good to be back.

The funny thing is sometime next month someone'll drop something small and then the entire Oscar race will be blown open again but from all indications No Country's a frontrunner and the new Dylan (can-it-be-called-a-biopic?) 'I'm Not There' seems to me like this years dark horse and from a few reviews it seems the director managed to make all six Dylans integrate smoothly and it's artsy and indie too so that goes in it's favour. I think Ratatouille has a lock for Best Animation though if the Academy had been more honest with themselves they'd not've created the Animation category so it'd've been up for Best Picture as it should. Best documentary should go to Michael Moore's Sicko sha (never liked the man but this particular doc scared and moved me.

I have another one of my small questions, grin : What do you guys think of all the "revisionist" stuff going round? I mean things like "Wicked" on Broadway, Russell Crowe's upcoming "Nottingham" and lotsa other inverted view works?
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 9:44am On Nov 29, 2007
Spikyn cheesy tongue Howz you?

I was gonna mention the Dylan pic. . .one of my best actresses (And i don't like actresses that much) Blanchett (Truly consummate artist) - I think she may get a nod for her role there. I loved her since i first saw her on the screen.  Ahahahaha don't like moore either.

Hmmmm am kindda in the middle with the revisionist works.  There are some tales/stories i'd like a different angle on, there are some i don't want. undecided
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by Dreloaded(f): 3:32pm On Nov 29, 2007
well it could be Brolin's year or Casey Affleck's (Assisination and Gone Baby Gone) or Javier (No Country and Love In time of Cholera)

Atonement is supposed to be loved by the critics too.

Good/Oscar worthy movies usually come out in the Fall anyway
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by spikyn: 7:02pm On Dec 01, 2007
iice I dey o! How story? Which revisionist stories (not just movies) d'you think hit all the right notes?
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 8:20pm On Dec 01, 2007
Spikyn. . .i dey o also tongue
Just been watching some stuffs. . .still missing quite a few, got a lot to catch up on. . .

Will be back with my take on that revisionist thing lol. . .gotta sleep grin grin
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by vescucci(m): 10:58am On Dec 03, 2007
I'm sorry y'all. I've been a little under. Missed Spikyn's return, damn! I hope there a lil left to catch. D-reloaded, you're all good. Spikyn I liked your question cuz it's kinda been on my mind too, though not in such clear terms. I hope your question encompasses true-life stories cuz I think I loved the twist in the Prestige. Beowulf too was spetacularly made, nice turn-out to it if you've read the original epic poem. I've been complaining all year that Hollywood's been turning out recycled stuff (revisionist) and how it seems they are getting low on material. Most of the box-office movies this year and the last were re-takes and re-makes of either comic books, older movie versions, computer games, old series, cartoon shows or simply sequels or third installments. There just weren't enough original ideas or films made from books (like it was supposed to be) as you can find in, wait a minute, I can hardly remember any. See what I mean?

Speaking of Oscars, we all know that it's not usually our favorite films that make the Oscars cuz a lot of things that are not our cup of tea goes into determination of short-listed movies. For instance, I really liked Bourne Ultimatum but I don't think it will win any oscar in any category. Might not even be nominated at all. But the films I reckon to have a shot in the tradition of the Academy awards I'll post later when I think it through and when this headache goes away. Ciao!
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 1:10pm On Dec 05, 2007
Sorry havent gotten back to you guys on the revisionist thing lol

Just need to get my stuffs and am on my way to see 'The Golden Compass' cheesy cheesy
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 1:46pm On Dec 06, 2007
Ok first thing the revisionist case. . .
Hmmm like i said earlier on, i like some, i prefer others to remain the same.
I don't think there is a sure case of making it, audience might enjoy one and totally hate another.
Dunno if i will like 'Nottingham' undecided

Vesc, i know right? Like all i see are sequels/prequels, remakes. . .now am reading about 'four-quels' undecided
Something like a rumour about Bourne 4, Jurassic 4. . .then there's Terminator 4 (did Bale get the part?)
Saw a li'l bit on speed racer. . .hmmmmm hmmmm hope Wachowki brothers have some new ish for us tongue

Finally. . .me liketh The Golden Compass. . .graphics are hella tight! I like the magical feel of the movie. . .
Transported me grin BTW the polar bear reminds me of ma dog cheesy cheesy
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by vescucci(m): 10:43am On Dec 10, 2007
I just saw 1408 and Resident Evil: Extinction. Gonna see Transformers today. Actually I've been saving it for last.

First off, 1408; it's actually one of the few films I've seen that are better than their trailers make them seem. I loved the twist close to the ending that got me saying 'is that it?' Then Kablam, shit happens, then moments later I find myself asking again 'is that it?' and then Kabloue!!! more shit happens. Though finally I found Enslin's survival a lil' not so good. He was after all a cynical bastard! But maybe he'd spread the word that shit does go bump in the night. But the tape, ah the tape makes more than one new believer. All in all 8/10. Good film.

Extinction, I'm sorry to say didn't work for me. I was dying for something new and there's absolutely nothing of the sort. Same old weak ass bad guys, same old 'whatever you do, don't get bitten' cliches, same old fight scenes, same old 'Mad Max' annihilated world. When I thought things were about to get better (the fight scene between her and the mutated doctor) the darn lasers had to let her off easy. What's more the titles are not appropriate. Apocalypse gives one the air of finality. Then come Extinction which is supposed to mean 'The End' in other words and I can bet you there'll be a four-quel (credit to iice) with the new clones. At least that has some promise.

The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford. Phew! Reminds me of FallOut Boy's track 'I must be a lawyer with the way I'm always trying to get off me and you' or something like that. Anyway I'll finish it today too. I was watching it then got caught up in other stuff, fill in the rest. I think it's safe to say that I'm back in action. I'd have watched more films but I was writing most of the time.

Enough about me. What have y'all been up to?
Spikyn, iice, Akin, D-reloaded, Viera (what's up, dude) and behind the scenes Jiddah. I think I got everyone in the house.
Holla!

P.S. I didn't get to releasing my list of Oscar possibles did I? Guess I need some revision on my takes cuz I've seen so little this year. Soon!
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 1:21pm On Dec 13, 2007
Vesc, glad u enjoyed 1408
I did, prolly coz i heard ish about it and expected worse. . .
Totally didn't like Extinction even though people say its the best of the three. From the first movie, i have never liked it's adaptation.
Haven't watched anything yet. . .been pretty busy. But am watching Sin City again right now tongue grin Yup, still love the comic-ky vibe of the movie. Still in loff with Marv (Rourke). . .he belonged to the old days tongue cheesy Oh i was watching Superman and Doomsday yesterday (had friends over), i didn't to even finish it, Lex looks lipsrsealed lipsrsealed Didn't like superman in that one (hardly ever like him anyways). . .only saving grace for me was Doomsday. . .would have been better if Darkside made an appearance grin grin (maybe he did? havent finished it yet)
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by MP007(m): 1:24pm On Dec 13, 2007
am shocked at the poll result, steven spielberg is the best out there, martin just won his first oscar last year, u cant compare , !
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 3:48am On Dec 17, 2007
Just because he (MS) finally won his oscar (long overdue) last year, doesn't mean he ain't the ish.  Sure their specializations run towards different paths. . .nonetheless, they are both good directors.

Nwayz, i was reading some days back that a Tintin movie is in the works.  It's suppose to be a trilogy, set is PJ and SS to direct one installment each but no word of which of the installment will be directed by who. And of course, PJ's muse LOL will be there. . .Andy Serkis - prolly playing the role of the Sea Captain.

Anyone seen the Cloverfield trailer?  Am not a big fan of that handycam shots. . .i hope the whole movie is not gon' be like that.  Most of my friends are dying to see that movie undecided Also saw a trailer for 10,000 B.C. . .didn't pay much attention to the whole thing. . .was more focused on the hero (yummy) tongue grin Then there's the PC game turn movie. . .In the name of the king. . .something something (Can't remember the title. . .) with Statham and Liotta.  All I can say is that, the custumes of Statham and Liotta look mighty modern for an old world undecided Oh i read something about a remake of Clash of the Titans to be directed by the guy who did LXG. . .hmmmm i loved Clash of the Titans ooo tongue tongue Even though watching those moldings these days is hilarious. When we were younger, my brothers and I would always be teasing each other, that one of us is Calibos lol

Ok. . .what did you guys think of the year? Was it a good year? (we are talking movie wise ooo) tongue
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by vescucci(m): 12:53pm On Dec 17, 2007
oh iice! I can hardly imagine you rating a year based on anything else. Even though I prefer SS to Marty, it's by such a large margin. Indeed his Oscar was overdue. But Oscars have a way about them. You have to make sure you beat the rest in a particular year. Some rookie might just get everything right and steal the show and another rookie will get everything right next year, leaving u with only nominations. Politics in the Academy is very funny.

I'm not only glad but ecstatic that Tin Tin is finally going to be a movie. And a trilogy from the onset is confusing. If they're ready to make that many, they might as well keep it up like the Harry Potters. Put no limit, after all there's enough material to develop. Funny to think of Serkis as anybody's muse but I guess Pete's somn special. I can easily imagine Serkis with an eye-patch. Good going! Wonder who'll be the third director and also how the movie's gonna be made. Real life acting or animation or what?

Cloverfield's supposed to come out 2008. Don't know much about it. More like, don't know squat about it. Never heard of 10 000 B.C. either but the title sounds great. In the name of the king; A dungeon siege tale. Ray Liotta doesn't strike me well for anything earlier than 1950, but I guess that's what I said about Joaquin Phoenix in The Gladiator. We'll see. Since Ron Perlman is in it, I might watch out for it.

Clash of the titans remake is kinda like long overdue and it'll make a lot of people nostalgic. A lot of parents too. iice, word! I remember seeing Persius, is it? doing all that stuff with Medusa and his beautiful Pegasus-like horse. I used to think those were some wicked effects. I'm sure I won't think the same now. Anyway I'm interested in seeing what they can spring with it. Calibus, lol.

Coming back to earth, I finished The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford. I'd rate it a B+ for adaptation and all that but the movie'll be like the 19th I'd pick off a shelf if for nothing else but curiosity. Nice performance by Casey though. I also saw the F4 and the rise of the silver surfer. I'm digging myself cuz I just knew the surfer looked to deep to be pure evil and I was right. But it freaking mind bugling how the invisible woman can be so understanding of someone about to destroy your planet. I'd be scared shitless and hysteric as hell, not cool and analytic as she was. They could even make jokes up until it seemed like galactic shit was going to hit the galactic fan! But not a bad show regardless.

Nice year, 2007. But I've never seen a bad year to tell you the truth. It's always gonna be some great movie to blind you from all the rest of bull. But I'll be catching up during the break for I'd be embarrassed to be seeing 'last year's' movies for the first time. That's why I haven't seen Troy yet, shhhh!
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 4:14pm On Dec 18, 2007
tongue. . .yeah i guess my obsession is no secret cheesy cheesy

Couple of dayz back, one of my brothers said he found the year to suck. I was like, are you kidding me? Do you remember 2006? That was a shitty year for movies. . .am not saying that 2007 is like the bomb but compared to last year, i enjoyed myself more. Am sooo hoping next year proves to be even better. A few movies you could say 'recharged' my batteries grin 300. . .yeah, Transformers was good for me, in the sense that i had come to expect big blockbusters to supremely suck but after watching that movie, i got the good ol feeling like when i was watching Independence day long time ago. . .the awesomeness of movies kiss

LOL Pegasus, yeah i remember pegasus and perseus. . .medusa (hissing snakes) grin grin
Word vesc! i want to see what they are going to do to the story grin
One thing i remember though was as a child was the silliness of the romance tongue Guess we can't always escape those huh. Hmmm, speaking of them oldies. . .did you watch Jack the giant killer? I loved that one too. . .but's its as hilarious as Sinbad watching it these days. . .those clay looking monsters grin grin grin

Right on with that Dungeon movie thing lol. . .I too don't see Liotta in that era. . .but i always see him in a villain role (has that sinister look) - prolly the eyes. Yeah Perlman is in that one. . .il prolly see it, am a fan of statham's fights. Hmmmm F4:Silver Surfer was better than the first one but still don't like the whole thing that much. . .really don't like invisible woman. . .too stiff for me and dry lol. Prefer the human torch and the thing. Mr fantastic hmmm. . .don't really like him that much either but i like Ioan especially after King Arthur although my heart belonged to the Viking in that movie cheesy cheesy . . .still have ton of movies to watch, to lazy to go get me new dvds. . .prolly raid ma friends collections tongue tongue

BTW how come we never talked about Woody Allen? not that i like his movies. . .some are just undecided
Vesc, still waiting. . .hmmm!
Merry Xmas peeps. . .might slip my mind later on. . .old age and all that grin cheesy
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by Vieira(m): 3:20pm On Dec 26, 2007
Films I am looking forward to in 2008:

The Dark Knight: Nolan and Bale bringing us more Bat goodness! yippeeee!!

Iron Man: This might just be better than I first thought. The trailer looks decent and they seem to be faithful to the comics, though at the moment Tony Stark is a grade A asshole.

AvP: This better be better than that pile of shit we had recently. Just read the comic and see how awesome this could be.

Bond: Daniel Craig is back, lets hope it is as good as his first bond.

Wanted: I am hyped for this, my comic book loyalty hopes this rules.

Trek: I am actually scared. Trek movies have not really lived up to their potential.

Jumper: looks good will try and see it.

Indiana jones 4: That is an automatic choice.

Hulk: another automatic choice for me.

Valkryie: This should be good and full of great acting
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by Dreloaded(f): 3:22pm On Dec 26, 2007
Only thing worth seeing on that list is The Dark Knight.

AvP? I wish I knew how to waste money.  tongue
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 3:35am On Dec 27, 2007
Trek and AVP - am not really excited to see. . .not a big trekkie. . .Well the first AVP wasn't that bad so i will still see it. Wanted-hmmmm just wanna see if the director carried over his tricks to this movie
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by vescucci(m): 12:57pm On Jan 03, 2008
A brand new 2008 with some lovely movies in works. A sure winner is Dark Knight. I think that's a unanimous choice, which when you think about it isn't really a choice. Can you imagine not wanting to see Dark Knight? Bet y'all can't.

@ Vieira (I have to concentrate spelling ur alias, D) I like your choices for the new year.

Dark Knight = No brainer

Iron man is very cool too. I'm particularly impressed by the way the trailer gives quite little away as in the twists. We all know the comics.

AvP to tell you the truth doesn't jingle my anxious bells. But I hope it surprises me enough. it has a fairly exotic title though. They're calling it Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem - The Brothers Strause's 2007 crossover sequel

Dan Craig's second Bond? We'll see. I don't have a problem with the last one, just thought it should be named, The Ass Kicker, instead of Casino Royale

I don't really know much about Wanted and Jumper though I've heard about sometimes back. Can't comment now

Trek? Oh not again. I'm a big fan of the series, especially voyager, but the movies seem like a far cry from what's obtainable in the series. I think iice mentioned J. J. Abrams having something to do with it. We'll see what he pulls off. BTW I'm gonna google Gene Roddenberry to see if he's dead or what?

Indiana Jones 4 = another no brainer especially with Shia tipped to be in it. Is that how the dude's name is spelt?

Valkyrie, I wanna watch for a spectrum of reasons.

1. I finished Max Payne three years ago and Valkyrie just jumped at me
2. iice seems to have a soft spot for Valkyrie who's supposed to be some kinda goddess or something
3. I bet y'all wanna know this. I said three reasons, not that I was gonna tell you all of em.

Hulk unfortunately doesn't move me that much. In fact I prefer the old series with Lou Ferrigno. Nick was the only really intriguing character for me. We'll see once again.

Ok that does it, I hope y'all resume soon. Nairaland seems infinitely large without y'all
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by Vieira(m): 2:15pm On Jan 06, 2008
vescucci, your own name no easy to spell as well o!

I would like to add Cloverfield to the films I am now looking forward to.

Saw the trailer and I am intrigued.

I would love it to be Godzilla or something.
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by vescucci(m): 8:27am On Jan 08, 2008
Hey Vieira! Since we're in the mood for movies we expect in 2008, here are a few of my very own additions. Most of them were released last year actually but since I've not seen any of em,

National Treasure; Book of Secrets - Just heard about this last week.

One missed call

The Water Horse; legend of the Deep

Sweeny Todd; the demon barber of fleet street

Charlie Wilson's War

That's about it but I wouldn't mind seeing;

Juno

Atonement

Alvin and the chipmunks

though I won't go out of my way to see them.
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by Akin007(m): 1:01pm On Jan 15, 2008

Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by vescucci(m): 3:49pm On Jan 15, 2008
Akin double O. whattagwan? Nice list! A movie I've seen a dozen times?

The Ladykillers, trainspotting, That Girl (a classic i.e. before my mama met my papa) and Snatch!

Exclusively! Others make it to a tally of three after, say five years (if it's still worth it)
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 4:22pm On Feb 05, 2008
Hola! Ello!

Needed a break! But am back and always ready to talk movies grin grin

No interest in watching more of hollywood's remakes of Asian great horror movies. . .Hollywood has yet to achieve the impact of the originals
No interest in the Jackie Chan/Jet Li movie since seeing the trailer. . .asian/american kid travels through time (sorry i smell 3 Ninjas, karate kid re-do. . .doesn't work for me!)

Saw Atonement. . .The Library scene will be forever burned into my memory. . .Incredible shot. . .Didn't expect to like it as much as i did since am not a big fan of the romance thing. . .but i liked it. Keira was mediocre, McAvoy was good but the girl who play li'l Bryonny was smashing!!

Sweeney Todd. . .Need i say more? Ma favorite people, Depp, Burton, Bonham-Carter, not to mention Rickman! Since am not a fan of musicals, it took some powers to sit through it especially when its more a musical and less a (gawd i cannot even find the word) cinematic movie (that's not the word but i'l have to do, vesc make u help me out with this one) tongue But the cinematography is awesome. . .

The bucket List. . .something i can do in my sleep. Nothing special about it. It was alright but not that great for me.

I have yet to see There will be blood. . .my time of buffering doesn't always work.
Ditto for Cloverfield. . .and National Treasure 2.

Highly anticipating the Dark Knight. Gotta see what Heath brought to the character of Joker. . .it's darker they say. . . which does it for me but i need to see how good it is.

Oh Juno was alright but not as good as i expected considering all the raves. . .am sure the sarcastic wit rocks their boat (american society) since they have been too long marinated in gooey, lovey dovey, saccharine, recycled crap! Something new please!

Akin, good to see you still coming over

Movie i have watched over and over. . .no brainer. . .LOTR all three in a setting over and over. Same goes for Bram Stoker (i totally adore Oldman)
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by vescucci(m): 9:38am On Feb 06, 2008
Talk about sparking it up. iice, no doubt is like a well that runs through this thread and if she ain't here, take a wild guess! How's that for a compliment?

I have not been actively watching movies like I'm supposed to. But I'm doing the next best thing. More time consuming too. Watching series. They get addictive, you know. You just can't wait to finish it if only to 'finish' it.

There are a lot of movies to be seen and I'll probably see them all like six-packs of booze. Don't take a cue!

At least I thought Bucket List was good judging by its earnings in the first week of release. I'm thinking again. Though I know Jack must shine through! The diabolical bastard!

Anticipating dark Knight? Well, aren't we all? (Rhetorics! ha!)
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 3:46pm On Feb 06, 2008
awww shucks! tongue tongue Am not that bad or good lol. . .

Totally 'get' the addictiveness of shows. It's like am always doing marathons, even when i have watched it before, i'd still do marathon. Sit through 2 dvds and end up haggard but satisfied!! grin grin
Like last night, i was watching Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. . .i slept late and almost ended up late for my appointment grin grin Can't help maself wink

Yeah Jack Nicholson is da bomb! Love him!! Am sure the bucket list will be good for some people, but for me, am like 'next!'.

Can't wait for jumper. . .going to go see it next week.
Oh i did see hitman, it wasn't as bad as i expected. Granted the storyline sucks, but i liked the fight scenes.
I also liked The Kingdom. . .good to see the 'big' hollywood stars take a back sit in a movie lol

QT has a new project in the works - Hell Ride!!
Can't wait to see how this one turns out.

Watchmen. . .hmmm reminds me of my siggy tongue
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by Dreloaded(f): 3:50pm On Feb 06, 2008
National Treasure is garbage. Nicholas Cage should retire.

iice, you should see The Orphanage. good movie

I'm gonna watch "There Will Be Blood" on Saturday cool
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 4:49pm On Feb 06, 2008
LMAO TOH haba! straight to retirement? I am hoping for some redemption undecided

Yeah am going to try seeing it this week, ditto for There will be blood.
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by Dreloaded(f): 1:45am On Feb 07, 2008
I dont know if he can redeem himself. The last movie of his that I actually thought was pretty OK was MatchStick Men.

After that it's been garbage upon garbage. Im almost embarrassed for him :/

There Will Be Blood is supposed to be really good. I wonder if it's No Country good cheesy
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 1:11pm On Feb 07, 2008
LOL i thought so too. . .and that was what year sef? But i mean he was good once, so am hoping he still has some of that in him. . .
Hmmm I hope so!
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by iice(f): 4:12pm On Feb 07, 2008
I was hoping to watch the orphanage online but none with english subs undecided
I just watched meet the spartans. . .need i say more? Only good part was the Britney spade's spear's part grin grin
Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by Dreloaded(f): 3:24pm On Feb 11, 2008
iice man, please tell me you're not watching most of these movies in a theatre embarassed, cos some are just a waste of money like Meet The Spartans tongue

Watched There Will Be Blood. Danial Day Lewis was phemonal, however the story was kind crazy, all over the place. I liked it though but not as much as No Country. The oscars is gonna be crazy. Josh Brolin vs Javier Badem vs Daniel Day Lewis. I cant wait grin

I wanna see Funny Games! lmao it looks hilarious. cheesy
