Cracks will appear along lines of tension and it will eventually be unsafe to use and an imminent collapse is in the offing.
The need for Neoprene or rubber expansion joints is because of the elasticity of the material used for the Bearings and Expansion Joints, consists of an elastomeric gland mechanically locked between two steel edge members providing a superior watertight sealing system. The rugged design of the Piccardi ®StripSeal system can easily accommodate the high loads of vehicular traffic while effectively sealing expansion joints in bridges and structures with movements up to five inches. Piccardi ®StripSeal systems can be manufactured to accommodate a variety of field configurations along with multi-directional movements. The Piccardi ®StripSeal has been engineered so that the neoprene seal can be inserted either prior to or after the securing of the steel shapes to the superstructure.
