The question many Nigerians and property owners ask these days is: "How Much Does It Cost To Dig a Borehole in Nigeria"? In this post we shall be answering this question as it concerns several locations in Nigeria and in line with the recent economic realities of 2023 in Nigeria.

It is worrisome that most parts of Nigeria lack basic municipal water supply amidst draught and need to rely on drilling boreholes. This is in spite of several programmes and schemes that the government has come up with. This has increased the number of people that utilize their private arrangement to ensure adequate water supply to their homes.

the cost and price of drilling a borehole in Nigeria is relative and depends on some factors one of them being the location. So we shall be specific in exploring the costs of digging a borehole in places like Lagos, Anambra, Port Harcourt, Abuja etc.

The cost of sinking a borehole in Nigeria depends on the typography of the area as well as the method that will be used. In general the price ranges from N200,000 to N600,000.

Cost of Drilling Borehole in Kano Abuja, Kaduna and other Northern States in Nigeria
The northern states in Nigeria are located in a desert region so it is a bit more expensive to sink borehole in that region. The cost of drilling a borehole in a place like kano, Kaduna Abuja and the rest starts from N400,000 for a professional borehole drilling company in Nigeria. Other Northern States like Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Borno and Bauchi might cost more for borehole drilling because of shortage of water witnessed in these states.

Cost of Borehole Drilling in Southwest Nigeria: Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Oyo and Ekiti.

In the South West Lagos has the cheapest rate for drilling a borehole which ranges from 250,000 to 450,000. The reason is obvious Lagos topography and environment has made it easy to reach the aquifer. Please note that the cost given does not include the cost of constructing and installing the water storage tanks. For states like Osun Ogun and Oyo Borehole drilling cost can be gotten at N400,000 while Borehole drilling at Ekiti and Ondo can go for more than N400,000

Cost of Borehole Drilling in Southeast Nigeria including Anambra, Enugu, Imo Ebonyi and Abia.

States like Anambra, Imo and Abia has easy access to underground water and so, it’s easier and cheaper to drill boreholes in these states unlike Enugu and Ebonyi. Borehole drilling cost at Anambra, Imo and Abia on average is N450,000 while Ebonyi states can go as high as N760,000. Enugu as result of its environmental nature and topography has been a hard nut to Crack for borehole drillers. Most attempts to drilled borehole at Enugu capital was fruitless. Most people in the state resorts to use of wells.

Cost of Borehole Drilling in South-south Nigeria States of Rivers, Delta, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Cross Rivers.

Among all these states, only Edo State has high cost of borehole drilling which can go as high as N500,000. For Rivers State and Bayelsa, Cost of Borehole Drilling can be as low as N200,000. Cost of Borehole drilling in Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Delta is also cheap and can go for between N250,000 to N300,000 excluding overhead tanks.

Factors that Determines the Price & Cost of Borehole Drilling in Nigeria
From the above you can easily tell some factors that contributed to the pricing of sinking a borehole in any part of Nigeria. the cost and price of drilling a borehole in Nigeria is relative and depends on some factors one of them being the location. We shall explore the factors:

Locations
Riverline areas and locations with adequate underground water has a very low cost of borehole drilling unlike some areas like northern Nigeria where desertification is being witnessed. So, location plays a very key role in the cost of drilling borehole in Nigeria.

Company
The cost and price of borehole drilling might be higher especially when it is handled by a bigger and reputable engineering company.
Most Nigerians when planning to get borehole drilled, in other to save costs, contracts young and up coming companies or even unregistered individuals.

Machines/Method

The use of more sophisticated machines and equipment for borehole drilling might come at higher costs compared to use of lesser sophisticated and simple machines. The above data is a credible guide on the cost of sinking borehole water across different parts of Nigeria.

Geological Survey:
This process refers to a scientific technique of investigation of lands under the earth for a particular area that can give lots of information about several facts like outcrops, landforms, the kind of soils and rocks, and many more. Usually conducted by experts, these surveys are geosciences, essential to have a complete knowledge about forthcoming natural hazards. The main aim is to develop a geological model that encompasses some extremely useful information like orientations of rocks, bedding planes, faults, boreholes and many more which helps the scientists to understand whether constructions are possible or the area is fit for extracting natural resources or not. These models being three dimensional, can give a deeper knowledge about geology so that further information may be fetched from them. The entire system being three dimensional, comprehensive understandings of the cross sections and contours can be made with a great flexibility to modify the structure.

Boreholes Drilling:
Borehole drilling is a daunting task that cannot be conducted without the expert supervision from people experienced enough in the field. Whether it is as simple as a core drilling or geo technical or as complex as symmetric drilling which needs lots of dedication and skill, the job is undoubtedly a cumbersome one. The drilling needs to be done at a perfect depth ideal for the user, and thus there is a need of some special equipment without which it cannot be performed with perfection. Moreover the machineries that are used to drill the borehole impart a great logistics need because they need to be shipped onto the site by time and with no damages reported. There are government aided companies who can work on the same projects and sometimes help can be taken from private companies as well.

Boreholes Rehabilitation:
Drinking water is indispensable for every human being and hence it is also essential to keep the source clean for obvious reasons. Several government as well as non government aided projects have been launched for rehabilitation of boreholes to supply uninterrupted supply of fresh water to every area. Several tasks like raising the outside wall, repairing it, inside wall cleaning and purification, arranging surroundings for less contamination, etc become a part of the project undertaken. Cleaning the pumps, pipes, removing obstructions, blowing compression air for cleaning, unclogging the strainers, form the rest of the tasks for complete borehole rehabilitation. Chemical treatment is also another option for the project team to accomplish the task. Few other chores include, overhauling manual pumps, clearing the environment, upgrading the knowledge of the users to maintain proper hygiene etc also makes a whole lot of difference.

Borehole Pumping Test:
Testing of borehole pumps is carried out for mainly two reasons-either to check and figure out the potential of the borehole so that uninterrupted hydraulic performance may be obtained, or to check the potential of aquifer so that its hydraulic properties can be pointed out. So the process involves pumping the borehole at a particular predestined rate and checking the level of water. As these data collected are processed, useful information about certain hydraulic parameters can be understood by expert hydrogeologists who can then assess the condition of the aquifers or boreholes. Several other tests like constant rate test, step test, recovery tests etc can be also carried out after a basic calibration test that adjusts the pumping equipment at different level of discharges. All these tests are carried out to ensure that the water supplied from the boreholes are the best in quality and are free from any harmful chemicals like nitrates which is very poisonous for human beings.

Hand Pumps and submersible pumps Supply and Installation:
Hand pumps are the most common sights in rural areas just after the water wells. They can be installed at a certain depth depending on the costs allotted for the projects. There is a need of expert team members to carry out the procedure as it is a scientific method where location of installation matters a lot. They must check out the right water supply or ways for that. Submersible pumps are ideal for pumping out water from 50 meters below the earth and with all safety protections for over voltage, over current and others, this happens to be a great alternative to conventional methods. Few advantages that it offers are covers no running costs, low maintenance, and can be installed in remote areas where only a grid supply can be managed.

Construction of Over Head Tanks:
Overhead tanks are essential to store liquids as simple as water apart from inflammable petroleum products, and hence the construction of the same needs to be done with precautions. Usually they are circular but it can take any shape depending on the requirement of the users or for aesthetic purpose. The chemical nature of the liquid stored will decide the kind of material that must be used to construct the overhead water tank. For the structural design it is essential to contact companies which specialize in erecting such specified tanks, which can be either private or even government sponsored. These tanks are supported by casings so that the liquid does not flow out on prolonged storage.
