I'm About To Start Applying For Remote Jobs. Any Tips? by TheManOfTheYear: 9:16am On Mar 14, 2022
Hi people, I've been learning web development at a slow pace since 2019 because of school wahala. I graduated late last year, by then I had already learnt HTML, CSS and JS. This January, I picked up React and so far, I've built about 4 solid projects.

Although, I've been taking some technical writing gigs which I use to hold body and soul together. Now I want to start applying for remote jobs. I need tips on how interview processes are like. Do they ask DSA stuffs? How do I structure my CV?
I'm currently building my portfolio website.

On the side, I'm learning Solidity for blockchain too, but still in beginners phase

Do NOT describe yourself as a Senior Dev if you don't have years of experience in battle

Can you further explain this?
I'd always present my self as a junior sha

The recruitment for Senior Developer roles are very rigorous. Most local devs (who are often self-trained) lack the experience or competence to withstand the rigour. Obviously if you have experience working in developing enterprise level code then of course highlight that.

It's simple- you would simply fail most interviews as the questions would come from a very technical and experienced stand point.

Junior dev is accurate. As long as you know what you're doing, I reckon you will land one soon. All the best.

Okay I get it. Do you know what the recruitment for junior devs is like?

Thanks for the encouragement. To be honest, I get scared of technical interviews, but if I can be given materials to prepare for, I could scale through any one.

Don't get materials bro, watch YouTube videos and learn from other people's experiences. Interview questions aren't pen on paper...

I'm still learning as well but I know where to look for interview experience so I am not scared at all...Fullstack dev here!

Awesome, do you know any job preparation sites?

I don't have one in particular. I'd recommend YouTube above all... E get why.

You can watch 2-3 typical interview experience videos and then check LinkedIn or any job site for requirements for Junior Dev roles. The questions would mostly be tailored to the specific requirements advertised in each job offer. . . So you gotta be smart. wink
Re: I'm About To Start Applying For Remote Jobs. Any Tips? by Nobody: 9:37am On Mar 14, 2022
Don't let all you focus be on a "remote" job. Remote which I feel translates to "foreign".

Just get a job, any job.

The experience of having previous work would help you land a foreign one faster than going from a nothing to a $$$$ role. Sure, it can happen but let's not kid ourselves here, the local marketplace is a more pleasant place than the international one, you don't want to know what competition is out there.
You also would already have learnt some basic concepts like how to smash interviews, to negotiate compensation etc. Fidgeting about when the opportunity of a foreign job presents itself would only hurt you as you would be learning from opportunities you're suppose to be smashing.

So apply for all jobs, local and foreign and take what feels right, build your skill, learn some more and set yourself up for bigger opportunities.
Just because "remote" is a popular word out there and should be your focus doesn't mean it is that easy to come by.

Personal advice though.
1. You're more likely to get that role if you ask for a lot more than you actually hope to be paid.
2. Sell yourself, but never oversell yourself. If you need more practice, then take time and get more practice. Trust me, you don't want to be incompetent while on a deadline and a scrum master on your neck on the status of a ticket. You would hate yourself.
3. Build actual products, not typical Todos and calculators. Make your portfolio website sometime unique and filled with unique projects.
4. Conversational skills is everything. A little joke here and there but an air of professionalism and a clear cut show of knowledge(you know your stuff) can help you more than your portfolio can. One thing you want to do is win the heart of the employer by also the team. If your team doesn't like you, e don be for you.

Wishing you luck out there.

This is really helpful.. Yes I built some real life applicable projects.. I also have a few open source merged PRs... My greatest fear is the interview process. I've been brooding the thought of practicing some DSA just in case.

About remote, I actually hope not to work for any Naija firm, their salary just isn't attractive even for a junior.. But yes, I will keep my mind open to all type of jobs. Thanks sir

Honestly DrLevi is spot on but there's something I want to add. Since your skills are mostly front-end and you need a job asap, forget about product based companies. Even the smallest unknown ones require very serious intense data structures and algorithms preparation. That thing is very tough. I am studying and I know what I am seeing.

I will advise you to focus on applying to agencies and dev shops both foreign and local. Their processes aren't strenuous and if you actually learnt what you are supposed to have learnt and known as a junior dev, you will have a job in no time. You can then start learning dsa when you have that job. Look for agencies that specialist in WordPress, Salesforce, Drupal, Shopify and other platform development. They are the easiest place to start your career now. Forget product based companies even in Nigeria it's very hard to join a product based company except your leg inside is very strong.

Thanks for the comment, but I don't know how to use no-code platforms like WordPress, Drupal etc

What do you think is the learning curve for DSA? Can I get a hang of it within 2 months?

It really depends on IQ. There are people who don't even need to know DSA. They have very high mathematical intellect and can solve everything just by looking at it. If you are a normal average guy 2 months is too short except you are doing leetcode from morning till night.

Thank you boss, I'd still apply to jobs anyway, I believe some companies don't require DSA. Along the way, I'd start learning it.
