Top 5 CVs/Resumes Mistakes to Avoid❗

I was busy going through people's CVs yesterday, and also revamped for some jobseekers (not free though)

I've had conversations with HRs and Recruiters over the months about jobseeking, CVs, Interviews and the likes which makes it easier for me to write an attractive and jobgetting CVs�

From the CVs of people I've checked and revamped, I realise most people make this mistakes which disqualifies them from getting a response not to talk of being invited for interviews

Your CV is a marketing tool that needs to stand out, and must be strategically written

Go through your CVs/Resumes to correct these mistakes;

1. Please stop sending 6-8 pages CV/ Resume: A resume should be 2 pages max. and CV 4 pages max. Infact I'll prefer 3 pages for a CV.

Do you think Recruiters or Hiring Managers have much time to spend on a single CV?

It's more of quality not quantity. You can include the valuable contents needed in 4 pages.

2. Putting Pictures on your CV/Resume is totally not necessary;

Once you have input your Linkedln URL Link on your CV, you need not to add your picture, most especially if you are applying for jobs in countries like Canada, U.S.A, UK and other countries.

And what has your picture got to do with getting the job?

It's the skills, experience, and the values you will add that matters to organisations not your picture.

I don't think pictures are important, and those who have gotten jobs via my trainings and CV revamps never used pictures on their CV/Resume. So it's not a requirement that makes your CV/Resume a good one�

3. Limit Creativity in your CV/Resume;

Some people's CVs be like documentary movie�. They will add different colours, and designs, and this makes a recruiter wonder if this person actually wants a banking job or the person is into animation �

If you add design and color, or save a CV in a file other than Word or PDF, databases will have difficulty in finding your CV so being creative does not always mean you stand out❗

4. Be Honest and Trustworthy;

Stop shooting yourself in the leg by adding skills you don't even have. Just imagine you adding Excel as one of your skills and on getting to the interview, you are asked to perform a task on Excel which you have zero-knowledge about, how will you defend yourself?

That's why anytime I'm revamping a client's CV/Resume, I ask important questions just to help them be on a safer side.

It's not lying that gets you the job, it's being honest in the little that you possess �

5. Poor Formatting:

This is one of the first things Recruiters or Hiring Managers notice when looking at your CV. It can reflect badly on you, as it looks like you don’t pay close attention to details.

Recruiters/Hiring managers are looking for CVs which are easily scannable, well-arranged and professional�

A lot of people would like to become managers but they are not willing to take risks. Managers take risks. They change jobs four to five times in a short period of time to learn the best practice before they settle for managerial positions.
Have you ever noticed that the managers that are being employed now are relatively young and have few years of experience yet with a very rich CV and good qualifications? You have been with that one company for 7 years and not progressing....WHAT ARE YOU DOING THERE?

In five years you should have changed two or three jobs. You will be ready to make the jump. If you remain with one company, you will be there for a long period of time before you can become manager but even when you are made manager, you will not be paid better than a person that just joins the company...except in exceptional circumstances.

TAKE A RISK FOR YOUR CAREER IF YOU WANT TO BE A MANAGER EARLY IN LIFE.
If you have a degree, start thinking managerial positions. Position yourself well with a good CV which I can do for you and get internet to apply for jobs. Why are you an officer, clerk or receptionist and yet you have a degree Start thinking of a salary which is above K10,000. Just remember that such only comes to those that are hard working and performers.

I particularly get concerned with Bank Tellers that work forever as tellers in the bank yet they have a degree. You can become a manager and get paid better if only you had the guts to move.
With a degree you have the right qualification to become manager. Many diploma holders are managers because degree holders are sleeping.

How often should you switch companies?

There aren't any set rules. And for most, it's decided on gut feeling alone.

But let's be real, relying on your gut for something so important isn't the most reliable. So I wanted to give you three ideas to think through to figure out the answer in a more structured way.

Reframe your question to "Am I in the right job for me, right now?" Don't try to fit your career into a predetermined number of job changes. Everyone's different!

Some people say "you should move every ~3 years." But, it's crazy to leave the right job for you just because you've hit the 3-year mark.

Think about this. 3 years can still be too short if you're still learning a lot, growing professionally, and getting paid what you're worth.

Even 1 year can be *too long* at a company if you're in a job where you feel like you're stagnating, you feel underpaid and there isn't room for growth.

⚖️ Assess your current job.

Write down what you've accomplished in the past year in your current role. Specific questions to think about:

• Is there progress?

• Is there growth potential?

• Are you learning as fast as you'd like?

• Are there no other jobs you want to try?

I think a warning sign that you're too comfortable is if you answer 'no' to a lot of these questions and you still don't want to explore a switch.

Switching companies is critical for salary growth.

Even if you do an exceptional job, most companies have limits to how much of a raise you can get internally. Usually, you can only really expect a 5-10% max pay increase per year, if that.

These rules don't apply when you move companies. It's not crazy to get 40-60% increases if you join another company that has different pay standards, even if you're in the same kind of role.

The right job for you is a mix of learning and the right salary. The exact split of what's more important is different for everyone.

Early in your career, it's often a good idea to prioritize learning and growth, even at the expense of salary. Later in your career, the salary component often becomes way more important to most.

So always know when it's time to leave. Dust your application tools and start applying to firms that you aspire to work in. Follow them on linkedin and apply to openings that you are suited for.

This makes them interested in getting to know you

Confidence builds around
Eye contact. Dressing smart. A firm handshake. Smelling good. The right body language.

Making a good first impression won’t magically open up doors for you, but making a bad first impression guarantees the door being slammed in your face. 

• *Don’t be the ‘adoring fan*

Even tho you’re excited to meet this person it doesn’t mean you should start gushing and fawning over them. That signals that you’re below them in social status, and you lack good self esteem

Instead, you want to be seen at peer level. To do this, pay attention to how you introduce yourself.

Avoid stuff like “It's really so exciting to meet you!”

 Instead, keep it casual: “Greetings Mr Johndoe, nice to put a face to a name. Great speech last Friday.”

You can introduce yourself if they are polite or interested to knowing you

"My name is Jane doe I help the sales team close more deals and help the public see what we do by running ad campaigns on Facebook.”
