Photos of the three-storey building before it collapsed, trapping residents, have been shared online, IGBERETV reports.

Photos from Google show the building standing at 31 Ibadan Street, Ebute Metta.

According to reports, the building collapsed late at night on Sunday, May 1, 2022, while occupants were at home.

As at the time of this report, multiple deaths have been recorded. 23 people have been rescued while rescue operations were still ongoing to save the remaining trapped occupants.

RIP to the dead and speedy recovery to the injured. God help Nigeria. I pray that one day we shall get sense in this country! Building collapses are just way too commonplace.. Is it that people like to cut corners by using inferior materials? Or that the state has no building control department who should be supervising every stage of new erections? Because I just don't understand it.

If a building is built correctly following strict plans laid out by architects and structural engineers it should stand for ever without incident. Look at houses in the western world that were built in the 1930's and further back. They are still standing today..

This is just so sad.
And it keeps happening Year in Year out in this nation.

Below are some of the advantages of building your house by by yourself :

1. It is more affordable: the cost of buying land and building by yourself may be much but won't be as much as when a developer sells a house to you.
Don't forget that he's also trying to make profit.

2. You will build the house up to standard:
Most developers, in the quest to make a lot of profit, use substandard materials to build.
Sometimes even the foundation and the decking are not properly done and that can lead to building collapse in the future. (God forbid).

3. You build the building up to your taste:
Most developers use out-dated products in their building in other to maximise profit whereas you can modernise your building to your taste when you build.
You can decide to install the best and latest water system, kitchen cabinets, tiles etc when you build by yourself.

We have a couple of good, dependable and honest builders on this forum that we can vouch for.
We worked with 2 of them in the recent past, and we never regret it.

but subsequently raised above and beyond what the weight of the foundation can withstand......

Fire accident is the major disadvantage of the Wood house thing.
Especially in this part of the world, that electricity is not constant.
Wood houses look so beautiful atheistic-wise tho, but.......

I no be engineer ooo but this building look weak and fragile from the pix sef.
Lagos has so many structures like this still standing. They should do the needful to them.
Akindele’s multi-apartment house in oworo made the front page some days back. Those sinking structures need chop dust I swear.

I blamed the landlord
Most landlord are only good at collecting money but it's difficult for them to renovate the house.
We are ourselves problem not until we put our house in order, Nigeria will not get better.
Abi na Bubu tell the landlord not to take of his house?

This could have been avoided. Preliminary findings indicated that the site had been sealed off twice by the Lagos State Building Control Agency in 2021 for non-compliance with building regulations, after which the site was abandoned. Developer removed the seal
