SENATOR Shehu Sani, yesterday, said the All Progressives Congress, APC-led Federal Government has failed in the fight against insecurity despite spending N4.2 trillion on defence and security in seven years.

Sani in Asaba as a guest speaker at a two-day seminar/workshop on “Good Governance and Democratic Sustainability Vis-a-Vis Electoral Process,” organised by the Asaba Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta State Council, noted that insecurity has remained unabated under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said: “We spent $1 billion to purchase Tucano jets and this has not stopped kidnapping, banditry and terrorism in the country.

“The terrorists are only armed with motorcycles and AK-47 rifles, yet we keep pumping billions of dollars into security and defence without achieving results.

“Kidnappers call relatives for ransom with Nigerian registered numbers yet no trace of anyone arrested.”

Sani said the only legacy the government can leave for the people was to secure their lives, adding: “The people are not even asking to be lifted out of poverty but to secure their lives while they manage their poverty.”

Declaring the ceremony open, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State called on Nigerians to participate actively in the political process to ensure good governance and democratic sustainability in the country

Okowa, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, told Nigerians to get actively involved in politics to ensure that the nation’s democracy was sustained.

Nigeria is due for firearm regulations upgrade. The insecurity in the country currently is akin to war situation, therefore, the government should upgrade the laws to allow citizens to obtain license to own and carry firearm for self defense.

Citizens having permits to own and carry firearms for protection will complement the efforts of the security forces. This is a reasonable thing to do. Self defense is a fundamental human right.

We cannot continue to fold our arms and watch helplessly while criminals without license take over the destiny of the country.

Instead of wasting money procuring sophisticated weapons designed for external military conflict to solve internal security problems, we should grant citizens license to complement what the security forces are doing.

Of course, there are genuine concerns about misuse of firearm, especially considering the incessant mass shooting in the US. However, there are countries with advanced firearm ownership laws that are thriving: Switzerland, South Africa, Namibia, even Chad and currently Ukraine and many others have regulations that allow ownership of firearms without hell letting lose.

To be clear, the regulations would be strict on who get issued the licenses in terms of age, criminal records, mental capacity, guarantor requirements and general background checks.

Regional law enforcements have been proposed and being tried but they have had little impact and not generally acceptable because of the nature of politics and the history of regional conflicts in Nigeria.

We cannot afford to just fold arms and put all the burdens on our military forces who are not even trained for that type of conflict. We should not pretend that any amount budgeted will have any effect. It is time we face the little demon and do the right thing.

Grant license to own firearm for self defense and you see banditry reduce drastically.

Upgrade firearm or what!

Oga no, upgrade firearm laws. That means there is currently a law or laws regulating possession of firearm which does not solve the problem at hand. You can get license for some categories of firearms for hunting, for instance.

To upgrade the law through legislation means that the reason for possession of firearm can now be extended to self defense.

Do you understand now?
